Answer the question!

Bush asked for cooperation from the telecomms, and they granted it to him. So there are at least two parties who know what Bush is so desperate to keep hidden from the public. Watch him sweat as his pleas and threats get more and more shrill and desperate. My five-year-old daughter is astute enough to know that there is something grand at stake here for this administration, an administration that has escaped unscathed from a host of serious blunders and wrongdoing since 2001 (not the least of which is their responsibility or lack thereof in the prevention of the 9/11 attacks). The Democrats in congress have been thoroughly unimpressive in their responses to the situation and the attack ads that are being run right now calling them 'terrorist enablers.' Why has no one in the mainstream bothered to explain that even the provisional law that expired really doesn't expire until next February, when a reasonable Democratic president will help craft new legislation? Why are we all so afraid to point out that 9/11 could have been prevented if only Bush had used the "inadequate" tools available to him in 2001? And why in the fuck doesn't the House just demand to know who Bush has needed to listen to since 2002? Bush knows, surely the telecomms know and you can bet there a few others in the loop... So here's the deal... he can have the immunity after we are all satisfied that his concerns were only with 'terrorists.' As gratifying as it is watching W twist in the wind and piss his pants, it is time for the Democrats--- if they ever had any intention of doing so--- to close the deal and get the answer to the big question: what crimes did Bush commit that make immunity so imperative??? By the way, it is sad that Republicans aren't a little more invested in this cause, too.

bush is not sweating, or pissing his pants, or in panic, or anything quite so dramatic.

bush can ask for telecomm immunity or not. democrats can give him telecomm immunity or not.

none of this matters.

americans are defined by their colossal sense of denial---no one of their own can ever commit a serious enough crime to warrant thorough investigation, prosection, and punishment. doing anything even close to that would shatter the national sense of complacency and pride so much that it would be tantamount to revolution.

american politics is based on the tacit understanding between all parties to not poke too deep into the shit for fear of the noxious stench it may bring up.

we will have platitudes about---building unity and working together and forgetting the past and moving towards a better tomorrow---for about 30 years.

after that, some sad journalist will write a book about what might or might not have happened. he will give interviews and book readings on c-span.

the book will remain at 1001st on the best-seller list. the top book that year will be "lindsay lohan reveals all". after a few months, even the 1-dollar remainder bin will be unable to move copies of the expose (the telecom's, not the lohan's, obviously), and the excess printings will be burned off to heat some homeless guy's cardboard box.

compared to the national shame of knowing that your leaders are scum who raped the constitution, this country will always side with cipher (who gave voice to the american collective psyche when he said that "sometimes, ignorance is bliss").
