Jayar, it seems that you like "Shine".  Is that true?  (I like it.)

Well, maybe it just gets stored in a place that makes it easy to queue up.  But although we never get to hear much of it, it seems like we hear segments from it more often than other songs.  Or is that just my imagination?  (Sadly, we don't get to hear nearly as much music during the breaks as we used to in the Air America days; there are lots of soundless spaces leaving one in doubt as to whether there's a show on or not.)

If it's not my imagination and you're playing it on purpose, I can understand why.  The tune is pretty good, almost demanding that you listen and telling you that what's coming next is important.  And the lyrics are positive and hopeful:

Love is in the water
Love is in the air
Show me where to go
Tell me will love be there

Teach me how to speak
Teach me how to share
Teach me where to go
Tell me will love be there

Oh, heaven let your light shine down

If you play it much more, it could become a TYT theme song.

Would that be a bad thing?

Personally, I nominate Rage... specifically "Bullet in the Head." I mean, come on, is this Rebel Headquarters or what???

I guess we could also go with "No Shelter," "Killing in the Name of" or "Guerrilla Radio". Hmmm, maybe just any Rage Against the Machine song would be appropriate.

I vote for Guerilla Radio.  Or that Zack de la Rocha song he did with DJ Shadow (can't remember the name).  That was great as well.

I don't know any of the groups or songs you guys are talking about, and I used to know everyone!  Well, maybe it's just that there's too much music in the world and I've been too busy.  I'm still trying to finish Miles Davis -- but the son of a gun's production is damned near endless!

Bad thing.  Yes.

I've already written two candidate theme songs for TYT.  Neither one was used, but if either of them is judged to be inferior to that shitty Collect Soul song, I'll throw a perfect stranger in front of a bus.  Just be thankful the theme song is no longer that unintelligible ska nonsense they use to use and count your blessings, one two three four.

by OneHitKill on 03/13/2008 10:55:18 AM EST

I didn't mean to offend, OneHitKill.  I certainly don't want to be responsible for anyone getting hit by a bus!

So what did you write?  Got links?  (I promise I'll have only positive things to say :)

I'm not really going to throw anyone in front of anything.  And it's quite plausible that my submissions for TYT theme song were passed up because they are just as mediocre as I find Collective Soul.

I submitted the following two tracks after Jayar said he was looking for something more chilled-out than the hyperactive ska tune they were using at the time.

No need to hold back with your critiques (although I'm quite aware that the vocal samples on the first file are cheesy as hell).  I have other songs floating around online, but none of them have anything to do with TYT.

They both make me want to go play Super Nintendo for some reason.

If it's not too much of a pain in the ass, you should post links for your other stuff.

I like 'em both.  I mean really.  I don't get the Young Turks connection in ytbeats3.mp3, but they both make me want to hear what's coming next.  ytbeats3, however, makes me think I'm missing most of a song that I want to add to my playlist.

And "cheesy" lyrics?  Maybe I don't know anything except what I like, but I really do like ytbeats as the TYT theme.  Too bad it's not my show.

I've been in love with music all of my life, but I have no idea from what ethereal region you people get this stuff that you write.

Really good music.  Thank you for sharing it.

I've never posted audio before, so we'll see if I did this right...  Anyway, here's a shitty little loop I did for TYT bumper music.  Keep in mind, it's a bumper (like for coming back from commercials) so it doesn't change a lot.  And I apologize for the unprofessional sound quality.  All I have is an 80's drum machine, a turntable, and an old keyboard, and I recorded it on tape (if you young punks even know what that is).  Enjoy, or dont.

I found both files enjoyable, and I thought the first would make an outstanding TYT theme. They should add it to the bump rotation, at the very least.

I submitted my own candidate for TYT theme a few weeks ago, but alas, it was rejected by Jayar. I couldn't understand why? The song is enjoyed by listeners of all ages.

I would like to see what OneHitKill wrote as well.  As a failing musician who's tried to make a TYT theme as well, I can relate.

What else do you have for us to listen to?

There are four more original tracks here.  Except for "Shimokitazawa," they're pretty old.

The first one is good, but suffers from poor production.  I also feel like the bass line needs to either sound more like an authentic bass or more Capcom-y (like the synth instruments from something like Mega Man II, for reference).  Right now it's sitting in this sort of awkward limbo.  Also, the vocals are pretty muddy and flat.

All of that aside, however, it has a lot of promise, which you see in Shimokitazawa, which I LOVED.  Again, though, production problems.  How can we get you some decent studio time with a good producer?

On "Shimokitazawa," I spent 90% of my (brief) studio time tracking vocals, because I don't want to subject my neighbors to anything cruel and unusual.  The guitar parts I recorded in the studio, however, were unsatisfactory.  As a result, that track features line-direct guitars, a cardinal sin of recording.

Mega Man II, huh?  Cool.

Ever listen to The Only Difference by Panic at the Disco?  You know the really random electronic breakdown in the middle?  TOTALLY what I'm thinking of.

They were touring with "Live."  I'm a huge Live fan, but Collective Soul had a lot of decent hits in the '90s.  Man I remember when music was actually good.

we'll never see another decade like the 60's ever again.  Still, it's nice that we don't have to settle for what the RIAA tells us to like anymore.

"Better Now."  It's all funky and ass-kicking.
