What should Jayar play?

I've started listening to old Digable Planets, and I thought of how cool it would be to hear "pacifics" in between
one of the TYT breaks. Come on, that would be hot, right?

Well, here's my basically nonsense post. What do you wanna hear that you haven't heard yet on TYT? Personally, Digable Planets (cool, smooth jazz/hip-hop) or Immortal Technique (angry rebellious hip-hop ranting and raving against the system) would fit in with their style I think.

I've been listening to that band Muse lately.  They're good and political.
But I would really like to hear some Qwel.  He's an indy rapper out of Chicago with some of the most clever and insightful lyrics of all time IMO.
Jayar has great taste though (except he doesn't like Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan!?!), so keep it up.

I'd like to hear some Stereophonics and maybe some good indie rock like TV on the Radio.

I'm surprised we don't really hear inde rock too, or even stuff that broke through like Wilco.

Which reminds me, have you heard of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin?  I hated the name at first, but it's insanely catchy, low-fi pop.  Which means you might hate it, I don't know.

But if you click the link you can listen to a bunch of songs.  Most people love House Fire.  I like it too, but I love I Am Warm And Powerful.

And hell, no Beck?  I guess he's musically polarizing, but IMO, he has so many awesome songs. There are people who think he only makes wacky, non-sensical songs, but Sea Change proved them wrong.

I think that a fitting song is "Cult of Personality" by Living Colour. An obscure but great rock tune.

Catfish Haven

Not just because I know them (you probably don't, they played Lollapalooza and made it to MTV2 but aren't that big obviously), but because they have some catchy and different (relative to what else I hear these days) songs.

By the way, if you click the link, it plays Crazy For Leaving. If you don't like that, try Too Hungover To Headbang a couple of songs down (and no, this isn't a metal band).

What are the odds?  That bad is actually pretty good.  I have an instant aversion to anything that someone recommends to me art wise, but I really liked that.  "Surprise surprise" as Sam Seder would say.

Did you mean band or bad?

They're different. Throwbacks to be sure, but who's doing this kind of throwback music these days?

It really grows on you.

I second the Rilo.  They touched my breast.

some suggestions:

immortal technique - harlem streets

the gossip - standing in the way of control

rage against the machine - killing in the name

public enemy - fight the power

the last poets - when the revolution comes

Aw, ta hell with it. I like most of what is played now and can suffer through the Rap.

I'm old. Music should be appropriate to the target audience and I'm a step or two into the outer fringe, so I will leave it at "More Four Tops and Temptations, please."

What I'd like most of all is to allow the "segment fade out" music to be the "break" music - even if only once in awhile. Some great song starts, only to fade after 5 seconds and then another starts. Save some effort, just play the outro all the way through.

by MedfordTim on 03/14/2008 11:31:33 AM EST

I was ready to suggest several Rolling Stones tunes, but decided not to embarass myself.

As for the segment fade out, that is my number one pet peeve with the show.  Yes, you're safe in concluding that I don't have a helluvalot to complain about.  But to fade out five seconds into a great tune is like almost getting her there when the phone rings and you hear her mother on the answering machine.

It makes you think that the universe is malicious.

If they play too many seconds of any of those tunes they'd have to pay a royalty for using it.  Under the Fair Use law they can use a short sample for free.

How about MIA then? Her songs are pretty alright, for club music, and some of them touch on really important issues. Bucky Done Gun, 20 Dollar and XR2 seem like cool songs to put on. Youtube links included.

Bucky Done Gun (I just like it, Idk)

20 Dollar (someone's random ass video with the song included)

XR2 (I'm just thinking the random abbreviations part would be kinda weird or funny, who knows)

I don't want to pick on you, Spinny, but I can't let this big a lapse in logic pass by.

It's coming up on the :30 hard break, Jayar or Dave cues up the outro and the first 4-10 seconds of "Spooky" by The Classics IV play, then he pots down to mark the end of the segment, then plays "Cop Killer" during the break.

They have to pay (....yeah....right!...SShhhhh!) the royalty for "Cop Killer," right?

Now, it's coming up on the :30 hard break, Jayar or Dave cues up the outro and the first 4-10 seconds of "Spooky" by The Classics IV play, then he pots down to mark the end of the segment, then turns the sound back up to continue playing "Spooky" all the way through.

So the royalty goes for "Spooky" instead of "Cop Killer."

No hidden extra charges, no extra fees. Logic satisfied.

Did you work in radio by chance?  I only ask because of your use of cool radio lingo like "pot it down".

I just know what gets said in podcasting circles about Fair Use and what you can and can't get away with.  Far be it from me to lecture on the subject to an industry insider. ;-)

I've been often times horrified by Jayar's mix of terrible 80's songs and bad 90's stuff, even though I love those 2 decades for music..Though the other day he through in a somewhat obscure black metal cut from Celtic Frost that made me wonder if he is actually a genius. I might add their version of mexican radio is fabulous.
