Fear The Attack Machine!

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

I am always amused when our conservative friends get all puffed up and make threats about the "Republican attack machine" and how they will do this and how it will do that.  "Just wait unitil Sept! You'll see!"

The Jerimiah Wright controversy is a prefect example. Getting to the truth isnt the point. Regardless of Obama's response we know it will never be enough. Each response will generate a new accusation , a new ad. A narrative is being created by the right about Obama, one that will be replayed over and over:

Barak HUSSEIN Obama, rich white folks, God damn America.

No issues, no debate.

Barak HUSSEIN Obama, rich white folks, God damn America.

Obama has responded, so now we will see how the polls turn out...if his Reagan teflon is working this will be an interesting interlude in a overly long campaign, if not...hello Hillary.

The good news is that narratives work both ways, eight years of a GOP Whitehouse and a mostly GOP Congress is a target rich enviroment. A few of the targets:

We fully understand George Bush is just defending America when he goes after Iran and Venezuela, even if there is scant evidence to support his policy. Each time he does Oil prices rise.

When the price of oil goes higher, Joe Sixpacks gasoline prices rise and magically BIG OIL company profits rise. Did you know BIG OIL companies are some of the BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS. Could there be a relationship here? Have you seen the National Energy Policy? You know , the "secret"one. Did you know BIG OIL made record profits last year?

We understand that bailing out giant banks that made huge profits on sub-prime mortgage securities and who just happen to be BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS is more important that the registered voters that will lose there homes. Plenty of pictures of real estate signs with “Foreclosure “ on them.

We understand  "free trade" benefits for BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS are more important than the American jobs lost to cheap, polluting factories overseas. Cant you just see all of the smoke stacks?

We understand the pollution from Chinese factories now is the largest contributor to poor air quality in California. Oddly enough, the off-shoring to cheap unregulated factories in China benefits BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS. Did you know California is # 1 in diagnosis of asthma and respiratory disease?  Imagine that.

We understand that importing cheap, unsafe goods tainted with poisons from cheap, polluting factories (owned by BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS) in China benefits the BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS after the GOP decimated the product safety inspection and oversight function of the U.S Government. All of those dead puppies and kitties! Lead poisoned babies! Makes you mad doesn’t it?

We understand how embarrassing the weather disasters of the last few years will be when they are juxtaposed with the GOP and BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS suppression of Global Warming evidence. Dead baby polar bears, staving babies…horrible visualizations.

We  understand why the BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS, the BIG OIL companies, need 45 billion in US taxpayer subsidies even when they report record profits. Then we can listen to the GOP complain about SCHIP.  We understand:

US taxpayer subsidies for BIG OIL and 5.00 a gallon gas vs. sick children.

Or we can look at Iraq spending and SCHIP...Powerful stuff.

We understand why the 3rd largest DOD contractor and BIG GOP CONTRIBUTOR and , oddly enough the number 1 contractor in Iraq and former employer of the Republican Vice President off-shored its headquarters to evade US taxes.  We have pictures. It’s a lovely building in a MUSLIM country.

We understand how The GOP ignores our Commanders in the field and fires them if they point out problems with the current strategy. Our current strategy is to maintain a major profit center for Haliburton ( coincidentally former employer of the Republican Vice President )and other BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS.

We understand why the GOP tax cut schemes benefit BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS who continue to offshore jobs while cashing in on the domestic job creation tax credits.  All those empty factories and office buildings will come in handy when the ad is filmed.

We understand that GOP deregulation allows the credit industry to charge outrageous rates. That, plus tightening of bankruptcy laws benefits BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS. Joe Sixpack pays those bills every day.

We understand why BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS want more H visas to import cheap foreign labor to take American jobs. We have film of the richest man in America begging Congress for more H Visa workers. We also have statistics that show there are a surplus of qualified American workers who do the same work but don’t want to do it for 50% less than the going rate. Gates is a genius after all.

We understand how Joe Sixpacks income is stagnant or has declined while BIG GOP contributor Joe Country Club has gotten richer. We have tables and graphs to prove it. We have pictures of homeless people we can use in the ads. Scary. Who knows who could be next? Could it be Joe Sixpack?

We understand how GOP games the budget  to provide tax cuts to BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS. That impacts the care of  wounded Iraq Veterans fighting to defend our freedom. We have photos of veterans on second rate artificial limbs and in collapsing care facilities. How many flag lapel pins could you buy with the tax cuts for BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS  one wonders?

We understand how the BIG HMOs and BIG INSURANCE COMPANIES who just happen to be BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS can deny treatment for no good reason. I can’t help but think of the poor little girl denied surgery by a BIG HMO and a BIG GOP CONTRIBUTOR. She’s dead now. I think there is a picture of her hugging a teddy bear. Sad.

We understand how BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS, the BIG INSURANCE companies, made record profits last year continue to deny payment to Katrina victims even after they charge outrageous rates.

Finally, we understand how BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS profit from our pain. We have pictures the FEMA trailers all lined up…full of formaldehyde.

Yep we understand these things and rest assured, these are just a few of the issues that will be used.

Imagine Joe Sixpack sitting at his desk at home trying to pay his bills, an Obama or Clinton ad is playing on the telly or Joe is at his local gas station and an Obama or Clinton ad is playing on the car radio;

  • When Joe Sixpack or his neighbors lose their jobs he will be mad and scared. Joe will understand that GOP trade and energy policy that benefits BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS is responsible.
  • When Joe Sixpack realizes , through clever advertising, that the middle class is the new "black man" exploited by the elite GOP, Joe CountryClub and BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS.  He will be really pissed.
  • When Joe Sixpack sees a free Osama Bin Laden and GWB's WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE comments he will be mad that over 2 Trillion dollars could not produce a 6'5' man dressed in white pulling around a dialysis machine.

I think you get the idea. Those just popped in to mind. Add a few wing nut preachers in the mix, airport bathrooms, what fun!

It was explained to me by BoboTX that Joe Sixpack puts race and gender above all else and wont vote for Obama or Hillary because basically everyone in America but me and a few of my "leftie" fag pals are racist misogynst homophobes .

by Chinese Democracy on 03/15/2008 09:39:23 PM EST

What I said was that Joe Sixpack doesnt put 2 and 2 together like we do... Telling Joe Sixpack that the Black man is coming to take his women and children and promote racial tension and even violence is the way Joe Sixpack reacts to the news... Its what he knows, its what hes used to, and he responds in kind...

Thinking people like most here on the forum ARE NOT the majority of the Population in this country!!! Why cant you guys see that? Im assuming that most of you have jobs and work outside your homes in a social setting. Maybe its because I work in a school and I see the endless flow of Human debris and their retarded children...It doesnt inspire a lot of hope in me... But then again, I do live in Arizona...

Thanks for the post again, Fred. i have also hit the Recommend button, but to no avail apparently...

I wish the media would shout this from the rooftops, Chinese Democracy...MRFred has hit it on the head again...but its so much easier to bait people about race and sexuality, that the truth is never allowed to be broadcast...thats what I am saying...

again that theory is predicated on the fact that joe six pack is a racist.

Joe Sixpack doesnt have to wear a hood and burn crosses on your front lawn for this idea to take hold... Fear in itself will do the job.

Racists that you speak of are already voting Republican, so no worries. Just because someone doesnt accept what you do doesnt make them a racist-bigot-homophobe...

Its the fear idea that plants the seed, and the poison fruit grows from there...

Thanks...

Who do you think is coming out in droves to vote for Obama ?  It cant be all black people there arent enough of them

Why does Obama reguarly best McCain in national polls? Does this mean that majority of Americans are what you term "lefties"?

by Chinese Democracy on 03/16/2008 12:14:44 PM EST

[ Parent ]
Yes, in fact it is the minority and youth vote driving this surge for Obama... just take a look at the white vote percentages...Mostly for Clinton or others...

Now, you know as well as I do, National Polls are meaningless, especially this far away from the general. When do these companies conduct polls? During the day, when most people are at work...So who are they polling? People sitting at home watching Jerry Springer and Oprah or the Old and infirmed (thats where mcCain gets his support)...Need I say more....

if you actually think the Democrats are gonna win states like Mississippi, Iowa, North Dakota, Idaho and all those solid red states with a Black candidate, you are fooling yourselves... yes, he won the Democratic primaries there, but that was because they either didnt allow Republicans in or if they did, they took a play out of Kens Book and voted against Hillary...

Facts are facts, China Guy...Obama is doing well among the Lefties, but we will see how he does amongst us here in the real population... Remember, even these record turnouts for the Primary states are only seeing maybe 30% voting rates among your party...you're gonna need a whole lot more than that to beat your opponents...

thanks...

Facts are those things that arent up for conjecture.

Like the sky is blue

A majority of Americans are not racist

stuff like that

Here is another fact

If you hit the caps lock key on your keyboard. It will lower your caps.

by Chinese Democracy on 03/16/2008 03:23:40 PM EST

[ Parent ]
Ok, the first one about the sky being blue is one of those science things that Im sure some researcher can tell you why that is...

Your second point :

"A majority of Americans are not racist"

This is pure conjecture, and in my opinion utterly false...

Do you live in the same country as I do? If you are what others have told me you are, some "Gay Militant Hippie  Leebral from San Francisco" then I would think you would know better than most of how people are in this country are bigots and racists in many ways...

Now, am I saying that the majority of Americans have  Klan suits hanging in their closets and like to burn crosses on weekends? No, of course not, but you dont have to be that extreme to fall into certain definitions of being a "racist".

Maybe its being where I live, but most people in this country still live in a certain amount of fear of other races and ethnicities...and frankly, they rather associate and do business with their own than with those who look differently or oppose them politically and socially...

I believe that the majority of people in this country are still holdovers from the racist periods of our history, and that even though many of us talk a big equality game, when it actually comes down to it, there are still more people who subscribe to some of the old ways than not... Now is this to say a Black man cant be President? Not necessarily, but only time will tell that...

I think the main fallacy of many of these opinions and conversations is that you guys believe that we here on this site and other blogs represent the majority of American voters... WE DO NOT... I wish more of you would recognize this so it would make your lives easier... Saying something like "the majority of American are not racists" is just silly to those who actually pay attention to the world around...

These are just my opinions, so take them as you will...

Thanks...

...to boringly point out errors.

"When do these companies conduct polls? During the day,..."

Ummmm....computer says "no." Most (almost all) of these polls are taken at the dinner hour or slightly later, sometimes on weekends, but damn near always after 5 or 6 p.m.

A point you might want to try is the fact that pollsters DON'T call cell phones, which I have been told a lot of the younger folk are using as their main communication device, often foregoing a land line altogether. This alone would likely skew results to those answered by older voters who are indeed more likely to support either McCain or Clinton.

by MedfordTim on 03/16/2008 01:28:15 PM EST

[ Parent ]
even if the polls are conducted in the evening as you say, there is still no real data acquired from a sample of maybe 700-1100 people at any given point in time to determine the pulse of the nation...We are simply too large for that... The cell phone bit is an interesting fact as well, never really thought of that...

I put about as much trust in polls as I do in my ex wife - 0 -NADA -None... People who live by polls also mmust die by them, and thats no way to make it in this world...

I go by intuition and feeling...I know, China Man, I have no facts. facts are not what politicians deal with - it is not thier currency in trade... conjecture, feelings and opinions - this is how the political system (as it concerns elections) works...

Only bookworms and scientists deal in fact...not the rest of us in the real world...

Thanks for your corrections, Tim.

"When Joe Sixpack realizes , through clever advertising, that the middle class is the new "black man" exploited by the elite GOP, Joe CountryClub and BIG GOP CONTRIBUTORS.  He will be really pissed."

Wedges work both ways...I hate to be so banal about this but being a old child of the South let me tell you how it really was.

  1. Rich People
  2. Middle Class
  3. Poor Whites, Blue Collar & "white trash'
  4. Black professionals (ministers, doctors... small number)
  5. Poor Black

Lyndon Johnson upset that political and class structure that had been in place since the end of Reconstruction. His Great Society programs continued a movement in that direction stared by John Kennedy. It enraged group 3, the only thing they had was their status above groups 4&5, reinforced by years of racism.

Lyndon, and consequentially the Democrats were going to change  that. That was important because in those days the Deep South wasn't such a booming place as it is ( was) now...the pie was much smaller and the lower end of the white class structure had the prospect of having to share due to attempts to elevate the African Americans and expand their economic opportunity

Johnson had the  idea of a  mandate in regard to the 1964 election results to expand the Kennedy legacy but think two words : Viet Nam . After the massive spanking the Republicans received in 1964 and the unrest generated by Viet Nam one Mr Richard M. Nixon saw an opening, it was called the Southern Strategy.

In early 1960's...there was no Republican party in the South...period. Nixon used the basic themes the Repubs use now, patriotism,  thinly veiled racism, local rule (ie states rights), and appeal to the religious conservatives to lure the Conservative Democrats to the Republican Party.

Nixon knew if he could break even a small piece of the South away from the Democrats he could eek out a victory in 1968. So basically the old segregationists changed sides. He won and here we are.

Now the "middle class" is under assault! (real or\ imagined). Actually It been under assault all along. When the "free trade" wing of the Republican party, starting under Ronald Reagan, keep the coalition together simply by buying votes with tax cuts for the swing voters(and really big tax cuts for the corporations to offshore )while keeping the old segregationists and religious conservatives on the farm.

People in general looked the other way, after all we had new high-tech industries and a new economy, the smoke stack jobs and factories  in the North where being picked off one by one and being shipped South..good news for the Republicans and southern African Americans.  The thinking was who needs to have a pipe factory when you can make computers? It was a matter of comparison if you were college grad white collar worker and a factory closed in Ohio...it didn't effect you..sad..but hey you got a tax cut!

Enter China, free trade expansion...Now those jobs are being shipped oversea, the white collar, high tech jobs and information workers are being outsourced. Suprise! the "middle class" is under assault!

Whatever group taps into that new dynamic...will win.

God that was long winded.

A Cuban stogie and a good cup of coffee sitting on the deck goes along way.

Critiques invited.

I'm having difficulty keeping up with your conflicting predictions, like this one from a few days ago.

I guess you've staked out both sides of the issue, just to make things interesting, kind of like Hillary Clinton on the subject of Iraq. That way, no matter how it turns out, you can still rightfully claim that you were correct.

Pretty smart of you.

by KenTX on 03/16/2008 05:39:55 AM EST

and dont try your disinformation crap with me sonny.

"Its the economy and its  getting much worse than I thought was possible . The chance of a GOP victory I anticipated in Nov is fading...regardless of who is nominated." MrFred

Ive never supported Clinton but I've never been so arrogant , or stupid, as to say that I wouldn't vote for her in the General if she was the nominee. Ive always liked McCain, but he is hearing his "biological" clock and is turning hard right to suck up to the wingnut crowd, it's his last chance. No Straight Talk Express anymore. Also his Iraq stance is a long term loser.

Speaking of Iraq, Thats bull.

I have always believed and stated that Iraq was a complete waste of time , money and manpower without strategic value in the GWOT. Bush and the Neocons started beating the Iraq war drum well before 9/11, all they needed was bin Laden's assistance. It was a political construct borne of the neocons desire to secure Iraqi oil reserves. From GWB's energy policy paper in 1999-2000

"Over the past seven and a half years, our international credibility has been diminished, and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq is now a major oil supplier to the U.S.”

“Iraq is now the fastest growing oil supplier to the United States, selling 850,000 barrels of crude oil a day to the United States.

“As spare production capacity becomes tighter, Iraq is moving into a position to become an important “swing producer,” with an ability to single handedly impact and manipulate global markets."

“Perhaps most ominously, Saddam Hussein is threatening to cut back production and is again claiming that Kuwait is stealing Iraq’s oil—the same claim Iraq made in 1990.”

Iraq is sucking up huges amount of capitol and is contributing to mess the Republicans have made of the economy not to mention the Middle East. The Surge is only postponing the inevitable and it is unsustainable, much like our oil based economy.

by MRFred on 03/16/2008 10:58:22 AM EST

On the other hand, you voted for the architect of the Surge.

You seem conflicted. Perhaps you're really a moderate who analyzes important national issues, and simply wants what is best for future generations. You know that I would publicly tease you about it, and yet secretly respect you for it.

simply wants what is best for future generations

Yeah Ive got a new grandson on the way an I do stay up at night sometimes thinking about this shit sandwich he will inherit from us. Ive never claimed to be a liberal, whatever that is , conservative or any thing else.

Iraq...what a cluster@$~&. I do some target shooting every now and again. I generally don't look down the scope at my target and then wheel 90 degrees and blow the shit out of the guy six lanes over. Thats what we did in Iraq. No al Qaeda link, no WMD. What a fucking waste.

McCain was the architect of the Surge? Please. The Surge is a pointless , cynical exercise by Bush to pass of Iraq to a new administration. All this "white flag of surrender " is bullshit too.

Every group in the country is just waiting for the other shoe to drop...a lot like the Phony War period during WWII. Waiting, regrouping..at a cost of 12 billion a month to the US Treasury.

If you recall the FL Democratic party didn't give us much choice. Back in May 07  it was obvious this was going to turn out badly.

So I changed my registration. I though that maybe giving BigMac a chance after the village idiot screwed him and keeping that f#%@stick Romney away from the nomination then so be it. Kinda like a hedge fund with out mortgage based securities.
