Dick Cheney makes a fair point

Cenk was right to say that Dick Cheney's dismissal of public opinion polls is emblematic of his total disregard for democracy. But he missed a much bigger flaw in the vice president's logic.

On today's show Cenk discussed an interview with the Dickster in which the reporter asks whether it concerns him that American opinion is solidly against the war. Dick's arrogant reply ("So?") betrays a shockingly cavalier attitude toward the American public. In his explanation he asserts that leaders can not be beholden to the "fluctuations" of public opinion.

This would actually be a fair point in most instances, but public opinion is not fluctuating. There is no "fad" here. George Bush's approval rating has remained stable below 30% for at least 2 years. 70% of the public dissapproves of his handling of the war, and Dick Cheney himself also has a stable approval rating-22% last time I checked.

So now that I'm here, I might as well comment.

Arrogance?  Sure.  But their personality problems aren't the issue.  It's their motives.  I don't know if arrogance is only a tool in their toolbox or if they really believe the crap they're spewing.  But either way, they simply have no desire to serve the public.  This is reflected no only in their stance on the war, but also on the damage they're intentionally doing to our economy.

But with the cowardice currently in Congress, there's little chance that they'll be prevented from doing even more damage during the remainder of their term.

At this point, I'll just be grateful if they don't try to stay in the White House after January 20th.

I don't think that phrase means what you think it means.

Did you mean to type "fuck you"? Sometimes I confuse the two.

Dick did say "SO" which to me Is worse than him saying I don't care.  As for the rest of there term's ,    &n bsp;     ;     The dem's can stop anything these guy's try to come up with.
But the dem's cant seem to stant up together, And stay together.

I was part of the nuclear freeze movement in the early 80s.  The vast majority of the American public was behind this movement.  At one point I think I remember nearly 80% of the people wanted freeze on nuclear weapons construction.

And Reagan basically said "fuck you" to the public.  And got away with it.

And is now credited with bringing down the Soviet Union at least partially with a nuclear arms race.

And is remembered as a hero by most.

The fact that building more nuclear weapons had little or nothing to do with bringing down the Soviets makes no difference.  Reagan got away with saying fuck off to overwhelming public opinion and Cheney knows he will too.  I don't know if he cares if he is remembered as a hero.  He simply wants his way with Iraq.

Keep in mind too, if cheap oil started flowing from Iraq into American cars, Cheney would be a hero no matter how many Americans and Iraqis died.  He's still hoping this will happen - eventually.

Here is what I think.  I know they bill it as a war on terror but this is really a resource war.  I imagine that's why Cheney rarely if ever bothers to address Afghanistan or Pakistan or any of the other places where the original 9/11 plotters fled.  He's interested in securing long term access to Iraqi oil.  When he talks about "security" that is what he is thinking.  It has nothing much to do with "the war on terror".  That just serves as a useful diversion.  His comments reflect this thinking.  The average American is looking on the Iraq war in "terrorism" terms because that's how it was sold.  It makes no sense at all in those terms because the Iraqis had nothing to do with 9/11, had destroyed all of their chemical and biological weapons, and never had nuclear weapons to being with.  I do think that the administration thought they would find enough of these types of weapons to lend at least a little credibility to the story, but surprise, they didn't.  So naturally public opinion has turned strongly against it.  The only reason he still speaks about it in those terms is because that's how it was sold.  I think it kind of annoys him to have to do that.  So when someone tells him the public thinks the war is a mistake it's kind of like "So what?  The public doesn't even know what the real purpose of the war is".  They're angry that we're not getting any apples but what they don't know is that we're really there to pick oranges.

If Dick Cheney was interested in fighting terrorists, we'd be all over Afganistan and even Pakistan, rather than surrendering them to the Taliban/Al Queda coalition while we sit and wait in Iraq for the Iraqis to do something that they're never going to do.

But Afganistan and Pakistan don't have any oil, do they?
