Sorry Cenk, but "Archie Bunker" usually wins in America.

Sorry Cenk, but you're wrong. Its Hillary who probably has it wrapped up. In our country, unfortunately, "Archie Bunker" usually wins.

"DO THE MATH"! Cenk, as well as editors at the Politico said the other day, "its ALL OVER for Hillary".

I'm sorry Cenk, but I'm afraid to tell you, its actually the other way around. Barring an endorsement by Edwards prior to the North Carolina primary (which ain't gonna happen), HILLARY IS GOING TO WIN.

I say this, not as a Hillary supporter, nobody could be more of an anti-DLC, anti-Clinton, and progressive Democrat than myself. I WANT OBAMA TO WIN! I strongly want to see a more progressive, more humane, and far more decent American society than we have today. And we are NOT going to get that with Hillary Clinton and her "gutter" politics. Obama really would pave the way to a better, more decent and humane America. But Hillary will win, and there isn't much we can do about it.

But Cenk says, "thats IMPOSSIBLE, look at the MATH!"

No Cenk, its NOT impossible, in fact, Hillary will probably be nominated. Of course, Hillary will NOT win the general election in the fall, as she will have secured the nomination with such disgusting gutter tactics and dishonesty that few independents will vote for her - and many, many African-Americans and young voters will simply stay home in November.

You say its "impossible" Cenk, because of "the numbers". No Cenk, the reason Hillary will win is quite simple, the "Archie Bunker" Democrat.

To those of you too young, or not yet born to remember 1970's TV, Archie Bunker was a very popular television characterization of the typical New Jersey (or Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana or Kentucky for that matter) blue collar white worker, poorly educated and harboring sterotypical racist attitudes toward others. He votes for Democrats because of his union affiliation and distrust of corporate power, but harbors deep seated resentments toward Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, or others he feels a need to scapegoat for the rough life of his community.

This is the "Reagan Democrat", the blue collar white worker who Barack had the courage to openly speak to in his powerful speech, when he spoke of how he "understood those who resented busing", and continued to harbor underlying feelings of resentment.

Barack understands these Dems, their anguish about life, the scapegoating they do (just as Barack understands how some Blacks, like the Rev. Wright at times, also do their fare share of scapegoating). But unfortunately, many of these blue collar Whites don't understand him, or they don't want to understand him. They don't want to face it, because few us can ever face up to scapegoating. Its too easy and convenient to just keep on doing it.

So when the news broke a little over a week ago about the Rev. Wright, I have to admit I practically broke down and cried. I felt a deep pain. Because I knew then it was probably over for Obama. All the great strides forward, the BIG WINS in Virginia and  Wisconsin among White voters for Barack, which really showed America was ready at long last to accept real racial equality, all that came tumbling down. I knew Archie Bunker was going to win again, just like he did against Al Gore in 2000, when Charleton Heston helped win West Virginia, Tennessee, and Ohio for Bush by holding up a flintlock gun at every crowd he went to and saying, "over my dead body will they take my gun!". Archie went nuts for his guns and gave it George W.! Patriotism, race, even guns, all intertwine in an ugly knot in the mind of Archie Bunker.

Hillary KNOWS HOW TO PLAY ARCHIE BUNKER for the fool. Hillary was already doing that with her "3am ad"; the little White children safe in bed with the White lady in charge to protect them, and her "not that I know of" quip about Barack being Muslim. Hillary saying after the Lousiana primary that Barack only won because of "fired up Blacks", questions about support from Louis Farrakhan, etc, etc. And last but not least, a phony appeal to Archie Bunker on NAFTA, LYING (as her First Lady records prove) about how she never supported it. COVERING UP her ties to corporate lobbying interests and the DLC. "Me? a pro- corporate lobbyist Democrat? No never! Clintons' love working class Americans!" What a bunch of hog-wash! But Archie Bunker just GOBBLES UP every word of Hillary's lies that SHE is looking out for him, as her lies feed his sense of resentment of others unlike himself.

So, Cenk, just as ol' George W. played the gun lobby with his pal Charleton Heston to beat Al Gore in his home state of Tennessee and the rest of the Appalachian heartland and Ohio River Valley (West Virginia, Kentucky, Southern Ohio and Southern Indiana and even parts of Western and Central Pennsylvania - though Gore won the Philadelphia area). Just as George W. played these "Reagan Democrats" in of this part of America to beat Gore, Hillary will play these Archie Bunker Reagan Democrats too, all the way to the nomination.

Coupled with the strong support of the popular "Archie Bunker Governor" Ed Rendell in Pennsylvania (who himself made a few disturbing racist statements against his former rival for the governorship, ex-football player Lynn Swan), Hillary will probably get more than 60% of the vote in Pennsylvania. This, along with big wins that Archie will give her in West Virginia, Indiana, and Kentucky, will be enough for Hillary Clinton to claim, "Hey! Along with the Florida and Michigan,  I WON!!! YOU MUST GIVE IT TO ME!"

At that point, the numbers just WONT MATTER Cenk, the PERCEPTION is what will matter. The perception of FEAR among the Super Delegates is what will matter.

Remembering what Archie Bunker and the Reagan Democrats did in 2000 and 2004, they will gladly hand the nomination to Hillary, and risk whatever protests might break out for a little while at the convention.

Because the power-that-be, the Super Delegates, are FAR MORE afraid of Archie Bunker than they are of a few protesters.

But, in the end, the joke is on Hillary. Because Archie Bunker will turn his back on Hillary to vote for "the War Hero" John McCain. The man, who, according to Hillary and Bill Clinton, loves America more and is better to lead it than her fellow Democrat.

The crime of Hillary and Bill Clinton saying these things, running this gutter campaign, will not go unpaid in November.

Nope.  I'm not buyin' it.  Too many progressives in Bloomington, South Bend and Indianapolis.  Too many blacks and Latinos in Gary and South Bend.  Indiana is too close to the center of Obama's political machine in Chicago to go to Clinton.  The unions control the Democratic Party in Indiana and Obama has picked up massive union support.

The state of Indiana will go to Barack Obama.  Mark my words.

WV?  KY?  Sure, those will probably go to Clinton -- but not by a lot.  NC will go to Obama.  PA will probably go to Clinton by around 59%.  It won't be enough.  Obama's lead is too strong.  She's done.

Good post, Tarheel88.  Heartfelt and well-written.  I don't agree that Hillary will win, but I do  share your concerns about the Bunker mentality that the GOP taps into every election year.   Somehow, the GOP got control of our national mythology and then proceeded to lie up a lot of new mythologies (Supply-Side Economics, Tax Cuts Increase Tax Revenues, and t'was Ronnie Raygun won the Cold War are a few of their best and biggest lies) and get them repeated until they became common wisdom among the press and public.  But, I think that their most powerful weapon is their kneejerk political correctness.  I call it the Grand Old PC rap (GOPCrap).   You know, "support the troops", "if you do/don't (fill in the blank),  you're for the terrrrrists".  From Joe McCarthy to the smears and Swiftboating of (fill in the blank; e.g., Gore, Kerry, Michelle Obama, and Rev. Wright).   And, the key to GOPC is that the "not conservative enough for us" media and the Dems themselves are so totally helpless to stand up to it.   If we actually had a "Liberal Media" would people still believe that Gore said he invented (rather than gave political support for the creation of) the internet, that Kerry told a joke about the troops (rather than Bush), that Michelle Obama  said she's never been proud of America (rather than of American politics, what patriotic American could be proud of it?), or that it's been Rev. Wright who's been practicing and preaching hateful, anti-American racial politics for the past 20 years (rather than the Southern Strategists themselves and their hatemongering media propagandists).   "Was 911 unprovoked?"  Better answer yes.  Blowback?  Why didn't Rev. Wright tell his flock that they attacked us because they hate our freedom?  Why didn't he tell them to go shopping with their tax cuts.  Why didn't he follow the lead of our real superpatriot American heroes.  And, I hate to bring this up but I didn't see him wearing a flag pin in those videos (how did they miss that one?)   How dare he notice that we dropped nuclear weapons on people of color.  Had they been ready sooner, would we have been as likely to use them on white, Christian Europeans?  How dare he notice that we have little concern about the lives of people we've called gooks and ragheads.  How dare he remind his congregation that America has not always been fair and color-blind.   Being angry about leaders and actions that have been bad for America is only unAmerican in the world of the GOPC.   And, the ghost of Senator Joe whispers that he must be anti-American for supporting the hopes of the less fortunate among us.  Real Americans don't see that America, those people don't count in the mythical Rushian dictatorship.   How is it that the ones who actually hate the real America get to define patriotism and control the smackdown political correctness that shields them from all criticism?   How is it that Rev. Wright, who has worked so long and hard in and for the real America, is the one who is called un-American?

Obama turned his race speech on its head, and said this is about the character of the American voter. America is racist and there is only one way to fix it....elect him! If you don't vote Obama, then you're voting for his racist typical white person grandmother.

What a speech!

Of course your the biggest liar , and racist, that posts on TYT. But lets examine one of your "positions":

I'm voting Romney in Florida...That doesn't mean I'm not a RP supporter and big time donor....it just means I CAN'T FUCKING STAND JOHN MCCAIN

the Dems support the troops by supporting their defeat. The dems can't be trusted on any matters of national security

they ( McCain) want to stay in Iraq for 100 years. We're better off with Democrats at this point if not Paul

Voting for Democrats are at best like voting for street bums and at worst a lot like voting for terrorists

To sabotage McStain too! Who wants to waste another 1-2 trillion in Iraq.

Tell him Iraq has cost 1.6 trillion, and McCain wants to dump another trillion in it over the next four years.

The dems desire to defeat the troops in Iraq and Afganistan. They want to impeach Bush because that is another way to victory in the war against the war (or another way to defeat the U.S., whichever way you look at it.)

McCain keeps winning the anti-war vote....no idea why.

Less Jobs! More Wars! McCain 08'

So which is it? Your either for the war or against it. Your either for the troops or against them.

This guy is pretty damn smart!

"Hillary KNOWS HOW TO PLAY ARCHIE BUNKER for the fool."

Actually, Bill Clinton and James Carville know how to play Archie Bunker for a fool. Hillary's too busy waddling on and off bus ramps and stage ramps to know what the heck is going on in the campaign.

You guys are all correct. The Battle of Gettysburg will be fought in the state of Pennsylvania. If Hillary is held to less than 55%, she is in trouble. If Hillary gets more than 60%, Obama is in trouble. All college kids should be spending their spring break in PA, working on the campaign.

I think Obama might just barely win the Democrat nomination, but it won't be easy. The Clintons will never concede, and they have another 10,000 cards to play.

But Tarheels concern about Archie Bunker is very real. And Republicans have exploited this guy for 40 years.

Hubble, Lord Foul, and bobo are very familiar with Archie. The rest of you guys are idealist liberals. I love you guys.

Your Friend,
Ken

Man, you have hit it right out of the park...

Absolutely correct in most aspects...

Our friends here at TYT are gonna be sorely disappointed in November...

The "Archie Bunkers" of the world dont have to be old and fat and from the Bronx... They are young, middle aged, old and everywhere in this country and in growing numbers (bad economies always raise fear and trepidation which the character Archie Bunker so clearly displayed)... even in Indiana, Jarett, your so called Liberal Utopia :)

I hope Im wrong... but I know Im not...

Great Post, Dude... I hope more of the "faithful" will take a look and comprehend...

:)

What I am saying is that Obama is likely to do well in states with very rarified Democratic Party atmospheres.  What happened to Archie in Utah?  Wyoming?  Idaho?

He is also likely to do well in states like Indiana with large populations of black voters who are close to the center of the Obama political machine.

Dont you guys have any sense of humor?

And to answer your question, yes the 20 democrats in Wyoming and the 15 they found in Idaho voted for Obama... I'll fly to South Bend and buy you dinner if ANY Democrat wins either of those states in the general election... Absolutely meaningless victories....

Thanks, as always...

I'll fly to South Bend and buy you dinner if ANY Democrat wins either of those states in the general election.

As an educator, there's no way you can afford to do that.  This "meaningless victory" talk is an awful lot like the "just go away, Hillary" talk you were decrying just a minute ago.  You want to supersize your double standard with cheese, or shall we just let the Obama subject go for a little while?

OK, I might not fly, but Ill still get there if a democrat wins either of those states...

It would be the sign of the apocalypse, and I wouldnt have anything to lose... the world would be ending anyway...

What do I get if I'm right? My satisfaction will be in knowing I was right all along... no payment necessary...

"What happened to Archie in Utah?  Wyoming?  Idaho?"

Archie didn't vote in the Democrat Primary. This is the point you guys are missing.

This is still a red state, blue state electoral battlegound. We're fighting over OH, FL, MO, IA, NH, NM, PA, NV.

The question I would be asking if I were a Democrat is: Which candidate could beat McCain in those states?

bobo is one of the "bloggers" from the Clinton campaign.

If not he may want to send them a resume...while there's still time.

So now as we enter states that Hillary can win, the panic sets in.

That is the reason for this post and Cenks' to most recent hit pieces.

No more caucuses to hide behind? No more states where race is a factor. (Oh that's right, NOW race is a factor?)

Why is a white person who votes for Hillary a racist and a black person who votes for Obama not?

White people are now "Archie Bunker" (racist)

I warned you all about "joe-sixpack" and if you think the next 2 months are bad wait until November

These are the voters that WE need to get elected in November and so, in typical Liberal fashion, we call them names.

We shouldn't want a nominee who can win a "liberal" election. We should want a nominee that can win a general election.

Think of it another way ELECTORAL VOTES

Which candidate, right now, would be ahead in electoral votes?

by LORD FOUL on 03/25/2008 09:53:15 AM EST

No more states where race is a factor.

North Carolina lolwut?

We'll see.  When us Obama supporters turn out to be right, what are you going to do?  Cry to the hills about how it shouldn't have been him?  What about after he wins the general?

by jarett on 03/25/2008 02:20:59 PM EST

If Obama wins the nomination fine, and yes I will support him. If he wins in november great, that would be great news indeed. I will happily eat crow.

However if Obama is the Nominee and in October he is turned into the black man who hates america and the American war hero wins the general election will you promise not to blame Hillary?
