Mis-underestimating The "Black" Vote

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

Story after story, pundit after pundit... they all say the same thing.  It goes something like this: "Barack Obama should do well in the State of (take your pick)... the state has a large black population."

That's it folks, no further analysis needed or required.  Really? REALLY?  The implication of course being that blacks are voting for Obama simply because he's black.  Never-mind that Sen Clinton used to have a HUGE lead in the polls among blacks as their leading choice for the Democratic nomination.  That is not to say that they're isn't a percentage of blacks that aren't in fact voting for Sen. Obama for no other reason than the amount of melanin in his skin.  But the thing that irritates me the most is that if someone is a paid political analyst, why, WHY can't they dig a little deeper than that to try to
understand why some of those same blacks who used to support Clinton are now casting their votes for Obama?

Could it be that some (perhaps the majority) blacks have now examined the two candidates and have determined that Sen. Obama is simply the better candidate? But that would require blacks to think and reason, which apparently the media thinks blacks are incapable of doing. And even if one is to take that
overly-simplified/elementar y analogy that blacks are voting for the candidate with the most melanin in his skin, then why is that I never hear the pundits make the most obvious argument to the contrary?

Sen Clinton has been lauded as being capable of "reaching and feeling the pain" of the blue-collar/working poor of America, and those folks are supposedly voting for her because of her exceptional political skill.  Puhleeeze! Since the media has already excluded blacks from the equation (you know... all the blacks are going to vote for Obama) then the blue-collar/working poor is nothing more than code for "white people". While it is certainly possible that some whites think Sen Clinton is the better candidate, couldn't it also be true that many of those so-called working poor (aka whites) are voting for Sen. Clinton for no other reason than... wait for it... she's WHITE?! As Cenk would say, "OF COURSE!!!"   When faced with the choice of voting for a black person or a white person, there is most certainly a percentage of whites whether they are rich or poor, educated or uneducated who will cast their vote for the white candidate for no other logical reason than he/she is white.  But, we can't go there can we?  Instead, the pundits make it sound as if Clinton has some special political ability that Obama is somehow lacking. But I beg to differ. And I haven't even begun to talk about gender...

This does not diminish the challenge that Sen. Obama would face as a Presidential candidate.  But, my point is that if you're a political analyst, whether on The Young Turks or anywhere else, please PLEASE dig deeper!  But most of all, speak the truth.

I'll finish with this.  My belief is that Sen. Barack Obama has done extremely well in states with large black populations for the exact same reason that he has done well in states that have an overwhelmingly large white population with virtually no blacks.  I'm not going to provide the answer, I've already said that many believe that Obama is the better candidate, but the question becomes "WHY is he the better candidate?"  If one can figure out the "why"... then one will most certainly stop
mis-underestimating the black vote.

Great post, newseven. I did some door-knocking for the Obama campaign in the SC primary and I met several African American voters who were not planning to vote for Obama because they honestly thought HRC was the better candidate. And the vast majority of Blacks who supported Obama were eager to list their reasons for supporting his policies. Only one person told me he was happy to finally get a person of color into office and that was his reason for supporting Obama. I was deeeply insulted not only by Bill Clinton's brush-off of the SC victory, but by the national media coverage of the voter breakdown there.

All it takes is a little feet-on-the-street campaigning to help you realize that many people who offer opinions in the national media are doing so without a lot of factual support for those opinions. And why are they in those roles? Because the people who hire them are similarly intellectually lazy and uninformed.

Is it because he running for CHANNNNNNGE?
Is it because he isn't a Washington INSIDERRRRRRR?
Is it because he's for the little Mannnnnnnnn?
Is it because he has a PLANNNNNNNNN? And because his plan eats Kennel Ration his plan is better than Hillary's.

Is it because he delivers the same cliches that every campaign has better than anyone else running? Yep that's the one I'm going with.

OK Grasshopper, I'll help tonight, but from now on, you'll have to do your homework by yourself. Here's a good link to get you started. This is a relatively long video, but then,  knowledge gained from soundbites is usually not worth having, anyway. This is an excellent foreign policy roundtable from New Hampshire. You can also link to it from the Obama site if you wish.

Hillary Clinton was on the boards of Walmart and Tyson Foods. What did she do for the employees to improve their bad working conditions, awful pay, pitiful benefits? Nothing. How did her campaigning for NAFTA with her husband help working people? Not at all. How did it help working people for Hillary to make deals with insurance companies and pharma when she should have been working on a health care plan for everybody? She failed, as would be expected.

Americans of all races need a president for all the people, not just those in the board rooms and corporate elite. Obama has worked in the streets, served in the state house for working people. Clinton has not. She did work in the '70s for a summer at the Washington Research Project, and on cases involving children's rights, but soon after meeting and marrying Bill, she went corporate. While she was a corporate lawyer, Obama was a civil rights activist and constitutional lawyer.

Knowledge, respect and action on constitutional law, plus consistency in his actions, makes Obama more qualified than Clinton to represent, govern and lead the people of the United States--all of them, without regard for race, ethnicity, religion, origin, economic status.

Yes, many of us do consider our race in supporting Obama, but it is a matter of pride, not skin color per se. I am an Obama supporter because I like the idea of change and a new direction, not specifically his race. If Clinton wins, all that will happen is that the Bush Washington hacks will be replaced by Clinton Washington hacks. Then there will be infighting for the next 4 years and nothing will get done, as usual. Obama is the closest one to being able to clean all of that crap out and get a fresh start. His movement also has the potential to sweep 60 seats into the Senate and make the Repubs a minority party for years to come. Also, it REALLY sucks when the media implies that all of us 'blacks' will do this or do that, when they don't know shit about us as a people. The fact that Obama is Afro Am is icing on the cake, but it is not the ONLY reason we support him. We are no different than any other group. If there was an Italian running, they'd have the Italian vote, if there was a Jew, it would be the same, etc., etc. The shame of this is that there are many whites who vote the way the do out of spite, not pride, hence the "I won't vote for that Nigger" racist dude that was on 60 minutes. Imagine if one of us black folks said, "I won't vote for that Cracker, Jew, spic, ginny, etc.".  It would have been seen as more of an outrage than Mr. Racist's comments were, that's for sure.
