Maybe CA Is Not The Best Place To Live After All...

I just saw this headline over at Huffington Post:

Forecast: Big Quake Likely in Calif.

Does this mean Cenk (who could be an old man by the time this hits) will be crushed in the crumbling studio, or will Ana save him?

LOS ANGELES — California faces an almost certain risk of being rocked by a strong earthquake by 2037, scientists said Monday in the first statewide temblor forecast.

New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than Northern California, 97 percent versus 93 percent.
"It basically guarantees it's going to happen," said Ned Field, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena and lead author of the report.

The 1994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude 6.7. It killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area..."

Unless of course you're standing over the epicenter...

Speaking of samll quakes, I swear I used to feel them when I lived outside of Memphis... They said that the New Madrid Fault up in the bootheel of missouri was still potentially active, but I dont know...

you were probably just feeling coal mines caving in. ;)

ahhh, i shouldn't joke, but so many towns in the midwest would be decimated if they got an earthquake from coal mine collapses alone.

speaking of which...st louis sure got the giant shit sandwich.  worst tornados, worst fault line, and worst ghetto.  oh yeah, and the worst fans.  i saw more red sox caps in the lou after boston won the world series than cards caps.

that last part was just personal venting.

It's not the earthquakes but the milk shakes that will kill you in the end....  Umm steak sounds good - some artery's getting clogged tonight!

For many years I lived just blocks from the Cal Bears stadium in Berkeley, and a half block from the Hayward Fault that goes through the stadium.  That's one of the ones that is supposed to be ready to go soon.  Made it through the Northridge quake that flattened the freeway and destroyed part of the Bay Bridge though.  Just don't be downtown in SF when it hits Rev24.  I always kept my camping kit in my truck.

by desertpear on 04/15/2008 12:27:18 AM EST

I use to live near the stadium as well on Prospect.  Too bad my house was a sh*thole and luckily I only had to stay there for one semester until moving to Oakland.

I was always told that I grew up in a house on the San Andreas Fault, but I just checked the fault map and found out that wasn never the case.  What's with parents always trying to scare their kids?  Anyway, I too keep my camping gear in the trunk and honesty do fear a quake in the future.  What would I do if I wasn't home and my cats and dog were in trouble?  Go go gadget, pet saver?

  • Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet.
  • Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.
  • Carry a wallet "alert card" that lists the names and phone numbers of your emergency pet caregivers.
  • Post removable "in case of emergency" notices on your doors or windows specifying how many and what types of pets you have. These notices will alert emergency-response personnel during a fire or other home emergency. Don't use stickers; hard-to-remove stickers are often left behind by former residents, so firefighters may assume that the sticker is outdated or, worse, they may risk their lives trying to find a pet no longer in the house.
  • Affix to the inside of your front and back doors a removable notice listing emergency contact names and phone numbers. Because pets need care daily and will need immediate attention should you die or become incapacitated, the importance of making these informal arrangements for temporary caregiving cannot be overemphasized.

Thats breaking news.  Guess I better sell my house and move.  Predicting an earthquake will hit California by 2037 is not news to California.

by jdenham on 04/15/2008 10:34:03 AM EST

that was news (and the certainty), not just any old earthquake.  But you knew that already. ;)

I know the magnitude may seem like this is something to worry about.  But you can't worry about an earthquake that will hit sometime in 30 years.  It is not big news for Californians 1989 Loma Preta, 1994 Northridge were big earthquakes both in the last 20 years.  No matter where you live their will be natural disasters.  If you wake up in the morning it is a good day, so dont worry about earthquakes.

that people should move out of the state or live in terror!  I just saw the headline and wanted to share it.

Besides, the real danger and terrifying thing about most of SoCal is not potential for devastating earthquakes, it's the devastating cost of living.  My God, it's insane!

the west coast is the best coast!  screw you, atlantic ocean!  out here we have orcas and shit.

the reason i say it's crap, is because it doesn't take into account things like unemployment, just average rent, average wage, average home price, etc.  when you take stuff like that into consideration, los angeles looks a lot easier  ;to get by i n compared to san francisco.

and don't take my rambling personal, i'm just having fun with a silly topic!  OO-RAH WEST COAST!

I would live in a teepee on Venice Beach.

That way, when the Big One hits, I wouldn't be buried under tons of cement.

This earthquake prediction stuff doesn't scare me at all, and I live in California. Like global warming, it's real, and it will happen, but I just don't worry about it so much.

Now we'll have Ana's brother ("Big Arm" was it?) to save Cenk.
But the quake doesn't scare me, because TYT will be in a fancy studio on their own compound by at least 2029.  And we'll all be there with them, waiting for our savior Snobama to take us to his spaceship behind Hale Bopp.
Terradaloo!  Snobama is the true way!

This reminds me (totally random), whatever happened to that scientologist that was supposed to be on the show?  I guess Xenu told him not to.  Oh well...
