Senate bill challenges evolution, Florida

A bill that would let teachers challenge evolution with “scientific information” has passed in the Florida Senate.

Opponents charged in debate Wednesday that it would allow the teaching of intelligent design or other religious theories they say masquerade as science.

The bill would prohibit teachers from being penalized for offering “scientific” alternatives but loosely defines that term.

It passed 21-17 and now goes to the House. That chamber is considering a version of the bill that would not just permit but require teachers to present “critical analysis” of the theory of evolution. The Senate rejected that version of the bill.

As a native, though ex-pat, Californian, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Florida for existing. Whenever someone refers to the land of "fruits and nuts" these days it is more likely than not to be our phallic shaped state.

California still leads in that category I think but Texas is in close second especially if you want multiple wives.

Besides, any state that names its college sports teams the Ducks and Beavers has issues.

But as much as I love the Lone Star State I have to admit we got a lot of fucked up people here.  Of course we have a lot of people.

This conversation has now encompassed three of the four largest states by population. Coincidence? I think not.

And back when I was a play-by-play guy for Texas State U I dreamed of calling the South Carolina-Oregon State game.

The Cocks are really putting it to the Beavers tonight.  Boradcasting heaven!

We have to get some kinda credit for the mormons.  To have a story like that and we're not even close to Utah.

Half the country still believes that a book says what is, and that we are ALL cousins from Adam and Eve? Why do they still try to fight it?

Hate to break it to the religious fanatics, buuttttt....

-There is no big man in the sky, watching everything we do, every minute, and every day. Yet, he has a special list he keeps of things he doesn't want you to do, and if you do anything on that ten list, you will be sent to a firey burning place with ash, smoke and flames where they were cinder scream burn and cry, forever and ever until THE END OF TIME!

... but he loves them!

-We are not made all from Adam and Eve. Trust me, we are not all cousins. How I know? Well, our DNA is not interconnected with each other. Ergo, no relation.

-The Earth is not flat. We went into space, the sun is not rotating around us, we are around it. God isn't up there, neither is angels.

-You want scientific proof of evolution? Look at a monkey, and look at yourself. Connection? Lots of it. Look at a dog embryo with a human embryo in early stage of development. They are eerily similar, thus proving that we may have been connected somewhere down the tree.

Whew. Almost lost this from an accidental backspace.

Anyway, that's all I have to say, because this is getting god dang rediculous. We have proof against their theories, yet they don't believe it. They are stubb0rn.

instead of allowing our sunday schools to indoctrinate the children with a single narrow view of religion as taught by religious people, I propose that they teach viable alternative belief systems, and obviously the government should mandate this similar to what it's attempting to do in the science classrm in FL and KS and elsewhere. It just wouldn't be right to exclude valid alternative interpretations of the bible. As a practicing scientist I concede here for the sake of argument that the founding fathers made God the center of our government--hey it says so on the penny! But they didn't specify which, and that creates a problem.

I hear religious fundamentalists say all the time that science is just as much a religion as anything else. It is merely a belief system clothed as something else.

I must now find myself in an awkward position because this irrefutable argument turns my whole world on its head. I must come to a conclusion. Science and religion truly ARE equal. There is NO DIFFERENCE between them. To be fair and balanced, and to balance out the teaching of the alternative view of evolution, "Intelligent Design", we must have the government mandate the teaching of the scientific method in churches across the country, regardless of denomination. Special emphasis should be placed on sunday school.

This is the best way to encourage cross denominational and ecumenical ministry between the religion of science and the religion of religion. I am happy indeed that the republicans have gotten a head start teaching us about the religion of government.
