Court: Ex-EPA Chief Can't Be Held Liable for 9/11 Statements

A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that former EPA chief Christine Todd Whitman cannot be held liable for telling residents near the World Trade Center site that the air was safe to breathe after the September 11 attacks. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit by residents, students and workers in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn who said they were exposed to hazardous dust and debris from the fallen Twin Towers after September 11.

It looks like she was instructed by the administration to moderate her language at the time and be "reassuring" in tone.  What a surprise.  She eventually resigned because Cheney was forcing the agency to relax air quality restrictions.  She was, like a lot of other people, eventually disenchanted with the neocons, but like so many of the others, she kept her mouth shut and didn't confess the real reason for her resignation at the time.

They're just unbelievable. In the truth sense of the word, you can't believe any thing they say, not one thing. Did you see where Petreus gets the boot up and the old guy gets the boot out and the real reason why? Guess?!? Surprise, surprise surprise. Yes, you guessed it. He dared to disagree with the administration's policy on Iran. That is just their wet dream, McCunt wins and we invade Iran, you just know it.

Any administration has a right to have people in place who agree with their official policies, else why would you even bother having an administration or official policies. How many people have they had disagree with them, can they even find people anymore who will just say what they want regardless of reality? Again though, power, politics, money, ambition, you can always find yes men if you need to. Sad really.

I never really got all the hatred over Florio. I don't think Christie Todd was particularly effective in NJ, and given the scandals we've had in this area now I wonder if people would welcome Florio back, but then they say he had a lot of corruption too, so who knows. But putting Christie Todd Whitman to head the EPA, where the hell did they get that one. NJ has more toxic dumps, brownfields and clean up sites than prolly anywhere outside of maybe Utah or Arizona or Alaska, at least in the US, and she wasn't exactly on point getting things done here. Of course she's gonna be a puppet and talking head and mouthpiece for the administration, of course she didn't know what she was talking about then and probably still doesn't.

That is just another reason I'd like to see campaigns in the US run more like European tickets where you know in advance who certain people in the cabinet will be. I like the fact that Obama has come out saying Al Gore will be involved in his administration. I think with issues like CAFE standards, the price of a barrel of oil, America's deteriorating industrial base, the farm subsidies program, carbon cap and trade, global price of commodities affected by corn prices affected by ethanol production, America's dwindling virginal old growth forest, overfarming, frankenfoods, possibility for a bubble market in solar, emerging markets like China and India, poverty, global hunger and the US Farm subsidies program, megafarms and farm lobbyists, there are just too many complex issues to confront the next administration, to say nothing of nuclear power, nuclear waste, global warming and America's dependence on foreign oil, to leave these issues in the hands of another incompetent, inexperienced, tow the party line parrot head yes man or woman.

I feel really bad for those who lost loved ones at Ground Zero on 9/11 who have to continue to hear these lies and realize that men and women who rushed in when every instinct in them for survival was telling them to run away, and who have as a result developed chronic health issues directly related to their actions that day are having to fight the administration every step of the way. The administration who continues to use the attacks of 9/11 as an excuse for everything from illegal wiretapping to bombing Iran (yet to happen, wait and see) and can't even give these guys the treatment they deserve. Shame. For shame. It is a small wonder President Bush's approval rating is the worst of any sitting president ever at 25% and falling like a stone. Good riddance.

She said that her assurances of air safety were aimed at those living around ground zero, not rescue workers, and I see no reason in particular to doubt this.  That should have been made absolutely clear though.  You would think they would simply have protected anyone volunteering at the site by issuing good breathing filters.  You can get some excellent protection for about $20 bucks per mask.  How hard could that be?    In any case I think the Whitehouse should never "instruct" an agency on what kind of language it should use when it is assessing a safety issue.  Why the hell bother to have the EPA make an assessment if you're going to decide ahead of time what is going to be said?  It's another example of what kind of control freaks these people are.

Republicans tend to decide what they want the reality to be and then construct the argument after the fact.  They have no use for the old collect the data, analyze and report what the evidence says approach.  Sometimes that approach might suggest you shouldn't cut taxes and that would be unacceptable.

Viva la tax cut!!!
