Words From A Black Pastor

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
I spoke to my father(who happens to be black)((and also happens to be a pastor)) about the Rev. Wright controversy, and he completely surprised me with what he had to say.  I knew he was a smart man, but he always amazes me with the way he sees things.

He said that what Rev. Wright said was clearly self-motivated.  All of the things he said were based on his idea of things that were true, and whether you agree with him or not, he believes a lot of these things.  This being said, he also knows that the way he phrases things can be completely spun out of control, so it would be ignorant to think he didn't do this intentionally.  He didn't necessarilly want to hurt Obama, he is just trying to be the center of attention.  He just happens to be releasing a book soon.  All of this controversy will generate sales for him, from haters and supporters alike.  Some people might buy his book to burn it (a la "Doggystyle").&nb sp; Now, what my dad said that was most intriguing is that he thought the timing of it was the worst part.  This is not something that is new, but this is coming from a BLACK PASTOR.  If Rev. Wright is defending MY DAD, then why is my dad saying it is the wrong time?  Rev. Wright claimed all day yesterday that this message was aimed at the "Black Church", and not "Rev. Wright", but the "Black Church" ain't buyin it!

This guy. Sorry if I misspelled the last name. He don't read no blogs nohow. I asked him to back me up because as any regular listener of the post-game show knows, he's a metalhead.

I could have listed every genre of music, but i would've been here all day.  besides, anybody who wants to represent their music will post about it anyway, that was my intention...to get you riled up about your music ;)

who doesn't love a poll with 56 options? Good post by the way. I'd love to hear more about your father's views. Does he support Obama? Even if he thinks Wright's public showing is self-serving, does he see any value in it?

Although I have no personal investment in the controversy, it seemed to me that one of the things Hillary is accomplishing with her attacks on Wright is the demonization of the black church, which was unacceptable previously, (let's see, um because its racist). So I think there's some value in Rev. Wright sticking up for himself, regardless of motive.

He still supports Obama after this whole controversy.  What's interesting is that he was not one of those people who just jumped on board with Obama without taking things into consideration.  He said that if Hillary takes the nomination, he's going to vote for every office but President.  He also said that he has seen Hillary do things in this campaign that people did not know she was capable of, and it is turning them off.  I even discussed with him voting for Obama in November even if Hillary gets the nomination.  He said that would be pointless, because if the DNC picked Hillary to represent them in November, they are basically deciding that Barack will NOT be the President.  One of the best things my dad pointed out was that, someone on MSNBC pointed out that if Hillary would have left Rev. Wright's congregation a long time ago, because he did things that she did not agree with, then why didn't she leave Bill.  When he put it that way, I was like, Oh shit, why didn't anyone else call her out?

He does see "truth and validity" in what Rev. Wright said, it's just that the timing and the manner in which he said it was totally self-serving, ultimately defeating any good he could have brought about through a "proper" dialogue.  He hammed it up a little too much, but that doesn't mean he was completely bullshitting.

about Bill. The coverage has been so slanted it's not even funny. Hillary says she's tested, but has anyone gone through to find everyone she served on a charity board with and held her accountable for their views? Why isn't she being held accountable for her foreign policy gaffes? I could go on but, whatever. The primary is over, and she's just burning through Barack's war chest for no good reason. It's despicable.

I'm of a mind also that she's done things in this campaign I didn't think she was capable of. That's above and beyond some of her unacceptable senate votes (credit card bill, anyone? anyone?).

I've also learned some very disturbing facts about her, like her membership in that right-wing church in D.C. (courtesy of Barbara Ehrenreich whom I consider to be a reputable source). She seems like a trojan horse to me. I don't know why people don't see it. I shudder the thought of having to vote for her if she blows up the convention in August. But where else can I go?

I forgot to mention earlier that the congregation of my dad's church is mixed race.  There are white people, blacks, and other races that attend there as well.  I think the racial divide is being mischaracterized.  There are people out there that don't WANT to understand the black church experience, but I have seen plenty of white people go listen to black preachers.  A lot of times, they say it's a lot more interesting than the usual style of sermon.

Back to your point, I think it is very obvious that Hillary is serving herself and not the party at this point.  It is also clear that the Media has clearly decided to try and pick Barack's character apart, which probably means he is the cleanest of them all.  If he has taken this much fire, and not gone down, what will happen when the target gets turned on either hillary or mccain...time will tell, but I doubt they will survive the "sniper fire"...

Barack needs a garbage man. No--he needs a whole crew. He can have his positive campaign, but someone's got to take these people to task.

The media can't make the point about Bill because they apparently only have the capability to point out negative things about one person at a time.  Now its Obama's turn on the cross.  The question is will McCain ever have his.

And I would like every Republican who has ever worked beside, gone on the show of or served in any capacity in any organization with G. Gordon Liddy to explain themselves immediately!!!!!!

The man is a felon convicted of trying to destroy democracy, for God's sake!!!!!!  Yet I bet he sits there on his ass and attacks Obama for the Wright comments along with the rest.

Insanity!

Didn't the GOP run Oliver North for office?????
