who the hell is Steve Novick?

With all the hubbub about the presidential primary coming up in Oregon, there's a much more important race for the democratic nomination for the senate. You guys around the country probably don't care that much but there's a very vulnerable republican (Gordon Smith) incumbent this year. How did I miss Steve Novick on TYT (I listen to every show)? When was he on?

The Oregon primary is great, I'm glad people will be watching it this year even though it will have essentially no impact on the race for president, since it's over and Obama has won. Despite this all we hear about is Barack this Hillary that.

I'm someone who pays attention to politics, but I have no idea who's running in our senate primary. There's some guy, Novick, (I saw an ad on tv-take home msg: I'm short but don't let that stop you) and some other guy Merkely (?). On the news they said there's also some other crackpot from Eugene (based on the soundbite I heard I lean in her direction) and an independant that people say is a spoiler.

I'm really dissappointed that rep. deFazio didn't step up to the plate, because he's a strong progressive and has many years of legislative experience. He's also incredibly responsive to his constituents. Oh well.

Are any of my fellow youngturks watching this race and do you have an opinion?

He's right on all the issues, funny, and he has a freaking hook for a hand.  The dude is the MAN.

How can you not like Steve?

My voter's pamphlet came last week. Check with your local election office if you didn't get one.

DeFazio is getting pretty high up in the House power structure. It doesn't make sense for him to become a junior Senator and lose all that oomph, especially when all signs point toward a helluva majority in the House.

I'm leaning Novick's way because I favor people with a sense of humor. It leads me to believe they understand nuance - something sorely lacking in D.C. these days...

and I'll check it out, but it's rarely informative for national races. Sometimes you can tell someone's an asshole from their endorsements, but its difficult for within-party primaries. Obviously I have some research to do, but I was really curious to see what some of you folks think.

now in the national media.   If you could solely base your decision on someone "Not being an asshole" then Steve's your man.   The complete opposite of asshole and by all accounts, a very smart guy from his early years.

That said, I'm a little worried that he'll polish his hook a little too shiny and use it as a mirror to look up staffer's skirts once he becomes a dirty OLD senator, but I hope you'll get twelve to eighteen good years out of him before that happens.

I'm a native Oregonian, but am living in Olympia, Washington at the moment.  I've given money to Steve Novick's campaign because I think he would be a great senator for my home state.  I was really excited that The Oregonian endorsed him!
