President Clinton in the 90s except that Olbermann's venting what I've felt since the 2002 bush retreat from Tora Bora.
It always mystified me - how could the rethugs get so pumped against Clinton? Was it just that he took their power away?
If there's a president Obama, do you think he'll have to have to face a similar tsunami of hate? Or are the rethugs emasculated now (doubt it)?
The question is will there be a vein for it to tap in to.
The right wing noise machine and their pro-war, anti-tax, anti-regulation deep pocket corporate backers will fund and promote the attack and attempted defamation of any Democrat leader. But transmitting is only half the story. If no one is recieving it is pretty irrelevant.
To make my point lets look at the last rise and fall of progressivism. FDR was as hated by the corporate elites as any president in history. They plotted a military coup against the man for God's sakes! But thier spin, lies and scandals (real and imagined) fell on deaf ears because the coutnry was done with the conservative message after twelve years of trickle down almost killed America.
Clinton wasn't any worse or more scandal ridden than FDR. Certainly not than JFK or LBJ. The difference was decades of Dem control had created a backlash and the people who remembered what happened when you turned things over to conservatives were dead.
So when the attack machine went into action in the 90s, it found people willing to listen and get on board.
I think Bush may have taken us back to 1932. The Right Wing Noise Machine will say almost exactly what it said about Clinton about Obama, the question is has Bush/Cheney turned people off to the Republican brand to the point that people are no longer interested in what they have to say like in the 30s and 40s. Time will tell.
I will say people identifying with the GOP is at an all-time low since they began asking the question. Dem identification is at an all-time high. McCain can't raise money or get volunteers. Dems are winning in the dark heart of racist America with a black guy heading their ticket, wrong track numbers, economic number, presidential disapproval are all at all time highs. The public disagrees with the GOP and trusts the Dems more on EVERY significant issue. There is a lot of evidence the Republicans have run their party into the ditch and will need to rebuild. A process which usually takes two decades.
