CA court confirms gays' right to marry

Somewhere, James Dobson is crying.

Is this the beginning of a domino effect in other states now that a big state like CA has set precedent?

Is it just me, or does this make the gay lifestyle very tempting all of the sudden?  What do you know, Rick Santorum was right.  Oh well...  Bring on the cock!*

My moral foundation was reduced by 69.913% just after reading the title of this thread.  I can only imagine where I'll be a few months from now...

By the way, I watched a pretty good documentary (from 2007) the other night about homosexuality and religion in the US called For The Bible Tells Me So.

I found it especially interesting that the Bible passages (pretty much all in the Old Testament) used to claim that God hates gay people (or something like that) are ambiguous or irrelevant, at least to that end.

Every election season Democrats roll out the proven winning issues from the past:

1. Gay marriage
2. Immediate withdrawal from the Middle East
3. Gun control
4. Raising taxes
5. Attacking religion
6. Halt to oil drilling

Even though it's never worked before, I think it might work this time. So I encourage you to proceed, full steam ahead.

But I'm concerned that you're starting to embarrass moderate Democrats like bobo, Lord Foul, and Hubble.

Quoting a conspiracy-minded Boston lesbian friend of mine:

"Margaret's take is that CA marriage is intentionally timed just like MA's
was last time: to scare voters just in time for the election!

Tons of marriage coverage all over TV makes republicans get up and go to the
polls in a homophobic frenzy. Ours was mostly unthreatening-looking older
women but you know they'll get at least a snippet of footage of SF
leathermen to play over and over.

Unfortunately, I think Margaret has a point."

Feel almost guilty about thinking this way, but I really feel like it is bad timing (I'm saying I realize it's not a progressive thought, don't jump all over me to say "when's the right time for equal rights" etc). Destruction of all of America's principles? Trampling the rule of law? Counter-productive foreign policy? Spying? None of those will encourage Repub voters to participate in defense of the country.

Nothing gets wingnut disciples to the polls like "the gays."

Obama is going to win despite all the old tried and true smear fear and loathing used by the conservatives in past elections.

They are in deep shit and McBush is their nominee?

The gay thing  no longer has the import it once did outside the 32% lunatic fringe.

California legalized gay marriage. A state that already had civil unions that gave exactly the same rights as marriage.

Or

McBush flip flops and goes from "liberals giving a time line to get out of Iraq is aiding the enemy to  we will be out in five years ( and gives no explination exactly how this will happen)

Obama and his team are more saavy than the a hole that says "oh he doesnt know whats coming" gives him credit for.

After the huge loss in Mississippi and the other 2 wins..  Its just an indication of what is to come.  Gay rights or not.

They hate the gay, man.  They would take ten n------ presidents over having to watch two dudes make out on the news.

I think y'all are right and I am a little embaressed I didn't notice that earlier.  The GOP "let" this happen to drum up an issue. Kinda reminds me of when they had the Supreme Court agree to hear the gun case like the day before the VaTech shootings.  That kinda blew up in their faces (no pun intended).  I think they were hoping to spin shit into electoral gold there too.

The upside is what if this does become a big issue and the Dems sweep anyway.  I mean if MS doesn't care about black people anymore what do they really have left.  If we monsoon they ass in November even with the gay at high profile, their party is totally demolished.

Running right into the firestorm Ken... I didnt expect it so soon this time around, though...

Im a bit past embarassment, Ken - Im heading for the hills...

Now as to the issue of Gay Marraige itself, I really dont give a shit - I say let em, it aint hurtin me...

But nothing brings out the Conservatives more than Gays, Guns and Blacks - lets see if the Libs bring out the whole trifecta and manage to lose this winnable cause -

But as the prophet Meatloaf said - "Dont Be Sad - Cause 2 out of 3 Aint Bad..."

these guys crack me up!

Oh please, is that all youve got?

LIE: Gay marriage

FACT
: All Candidates , including McCain , positions are the same. Marrage is between man and women. Favor civil unions. REPUBLICAN controlled court in CA made the ruling.

LIE: Immediate withdrawal from the Middle East

FACT: With McCains recent flip-flop on Iraq, posistions are simular. No Democratic candidate has advocated immediate withdrawal from "the Middle East", period. Obama will launch the most aggressive diplomatic effort in recent American history to reach a new compact on the stability of Iraq and the Middle East. This effort will include all of Iraq's neighbors – including Iran and Syria. This compact will aim to secure Iraq's borders; keep neighboring countries from meddling inside Iraq; isolate al Qaeda; support reconciliation among Iraq's sectarian groups; and provide financial support for Iraq's reconstruction.

LIE: Gun control

FACT(s) Neither candidate is advocating gun control measures. As President, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama also favors commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. He supports closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. He also supports making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets America’s hunters and anglers are a key constituency that must take an active role and have a powerful voice in this coalition.

LIE Raising taxes ( except for Ken)

FACT(s)

  • Reinstate PAYGO Rules: Obama believes that a critical step in restoring fiscal discipline is enforcing pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) budgeting rules which require new spending commitments or tax changes to be paid for by cuts to other programs or new revenue.
  • Reverse Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy: Obama will protect tax cuts for poor and middle class families, but he will reverse most of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers.
  • Cut Pork Barrel Spending: Obama introduced and passed bipartisan legislation that would require more disclosure and transparency for special-interest earmarks. Obama believes that spending that cannot withstand public scrutiny cannot be justified. Obama will slash earmarks to no greater than year 2001 levels and ensure all spending decisions are open to the public.
  • Make Government Spending More Accountable and Efficient: Obama will ensure that federal contracts over $25,000 are competitively bid. Obama will also increase the efficiency of government programs through better use of technology, stronger management that demands accountability and by leveraging the government's high-volume purchasing power to get lower prices.
  • End Wasteful Government Spending: Obama will stop funding wasteful, obsolete federal government programs that make no financial sense. Obama has called for an end to subsidies for oil and gas companies that are enjoying record profits, as well as the elimination of subsidies to the private student loan industry which has repeatedly used unethical business practices. Obama will also tackle wasteful spending in the Medicare program.

LIE : Attacking religion

FACT (s) Obama: God is constantly present in our lives, and this presence is a source of hope.

“Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope: In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation, a belief in things not seen, a belief that there are better days ahead.” – Democratic National Convention Keynote Address.
•Progressives should boldly approach matters of faith and values.
“[I]f we truly hope to speak to people where they're at - to communicate our hopes and values in a way that's relevant to their own - then as progressives, we cannot abandon the field of religious discourse…Because when we ignore the debate about what it means to be a good Christian or Muslim or Jew; when we discuss religion only in the negative sense of where or how it should not be practiced, rather than in the positive sense of what it tells us about our obligations towards one another…others will fill the vacuum, those with the most insular views of faith, or those who cynically use religion to justify partisan ends.” – Call to Renewal Keynote Address
“Our failure as progressives to tap into the moral underpinnings of the nation is not just rhetorical, though. Our fear of getting “preachy” may also lead us to discount the role that values and culture play in addressing some of our most urgent social problems.” - The Audacity of Hope.
•As Joshua built on the work of Moses, leaders of today – the ‘Joshua Generation’ – must build of the foundation of previous generations to move our nation forward.
“The final thing that I think the Moses generation teaches us is to remind ourselves that we do what we do because God is with us. You know, when Moses was first called to lead people out of the Promised Land…the Lord said I will be with you. Throw down that rod. Pick it back up. I'll show you what to do. The same thing happened with the Joshua generation.
Joshua said, you know, I'm scared. I'm not sure that I am up to the challenge. The Lord said to him, every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon, I have given you. Be strong and have courage, for I am with you wherever you go. Be strong and have courage. It's a prayer for a journey. A prayer that kept a woman in her seat when the bus driver told her to get up, a prayer that led nine children through the doors of that Little Rock school, a prayer that carried our brothers and sisters over a bridge right here in Selma, Alabama. Be strong and have courage.” -Address to Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, Selma, Alabama, on the Anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Faith should not be used as a wedge to divide.
“We think of faith as a source of comfort and understanding but find our expressions of faith sowing division; we believe ourselves to be a tolerant people even as racial, religious, and cultural tensions roil the landscape. And instead of resolving these tensions or mediating these conflicts, our politics fans them, exploits them, and drives us further apart.” – The Audacity of Hope.
“Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America – there's the United States of America. There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America – there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red

LIE: Halt to oil drilling.

FACT: (s)The market will decide: " I think $120 barrell oil will provide suficent incentive for oil producers to find additional supplies"

Not sure what your point is. What I'd like to know is, who shall be next? Hawaii? New Jersey?

Anyone taking bets on who'll be the last? Got to be Alabama, right? Or does someone have the inside dope (getta you tuttsi fruittsi!).

If my friend is right, we'll have a gay marriage crisis every four years until we run out of states. That's 196 more years of Republicans in the Exec.
