A "Racialist" Breakdown to Maxim's Hot 100

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
When TYT went over Maxim’s top 100 hot women of 2008 last Friday, I was once again disappointed with this year’s crop.  Don’t get me wrong, I love White women, but this list is just plain whack.  To begin, the only Indian woman to make the list was Victoria Secret’s, Selita Ebanks, coming in at #63, not to mention a big zero on the Arab/Persian American women.  In all fairness, American Pie’s, Shannon Elizabeth #29, does have a father who is part Syrian and Lebononse, but is this as good as it gets?

Moving on to the Black women, Ashanti and Garbrielle Union were the only ones to make the list who had both a Black father and mother, though five other Black/White women made the list.  I guess according to Maxim’s standards if you happen to be a person of color, you better have some white in you if want to be a serious contender?  The Latinos did a little better with seven finalists along with another five of mixed Latino/White heritage.  For the record, I classified the two Spanish women (Penelope Cruz and Paz Vega) as Latinos along with the Puerto Ricans (Nadine Velazquez and Roselyn Sanchez), Dominican (Zoe Saldana) and Cuban (Eva Mendes).  Now on to the Jewish women - Sarah Michell Gellar #5 and Mila Kunis #81.  Ok, there were seven additional women who had one parent of Jewish decent, but I’ll save that for my big “Mixed Group” breakdown.

Also if you're offended by Maxim's standard of judging "hottness" by outward physical beauty, go check out feminist, Jessica Valenti's Real Hot 100.  Jessica's a hottie inside and out and word is she's coming to the Young Turks soon!

In breaking down these numbers, I can’t help put to feel like Dave Chappelle in that race draft skit.  To mix things up before I get to more numbers, some interesting things I came across:
  1. Isla Fischer #61 converted to Judaism “in advance of her marriage to Sacha Baron Cohen”–you know Ali G/Borat!
  2. Sienna Miller’s (#27) mother use to be a secretary to David Bowie - that would be a bizarre job!
  3. Mila Kunis, aka that “seventies show” chick who’s going out with Macaulay Culkin, is heterochromatic due to “injections to treat glaucoma.”  Basically, we know who on this list is lighting up
  4. Lastly I have notes that Paz Vega is super hot and Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson are not.  Sorry guys, you can’t argue with Excel notes.
So to finish this off, I thought I’d end with some more stats:
  1. California is the #1 birth state with 21% of the top 99 women being born there, followed by New York at 11% and Texas at 10%.
  2. The average age of these women is 27.
  3. If we broke the numbers down by rigid/simple race categories we have 75% White women (including women of Jewish decent), 12% Latino, 7% Black, 6% Asian, and a big whopping 0% Native Americans, though a couple women did have a small percentage of native blood.
  4. If we added the Mixed category, the numbers would be 66% white, 21% Mixed, 7% Latino, 2% Black, 2% Asian, 2% Jewish, and 1% Indian.
The Mixed Groups breakdown is as follows:  5% Mixed Latino/White, 5% Mixed Black/White, 3% Mixed Asian/White, 7% Mixed Jewish/White, and 1% Mixed Arab/White.

That’s it for now because I’m over crunching numbers and trying to figure what race/ethnicity I should classify someone into.  I’ll let you make your own observations and I understand that beauty is supposedly in the eye of the beholder, but I find myself growing very tired by Maxim’s standards.  Also, to be honest I just wasn’t all that impressed with this list and I know America can do better.

P.S. If you were wondering who the missing top 100 lady is, that would be the Pussycat Dolls.

If hot ass women aren't part of the "real world", then dial me back into the matrix right now.

I would love to go into why I think polls like this are important, but I'm off for the day.  Though real quick, I know Maxim isn't one the most important/intellectual magazines out there, however it is read by a lot of people along with their noteriety of their "ho t" women.  I think there's also some importance in looking at the decisions that these editors make in deciding "hotness " since I believe it is somewhat refelctive of American society at large.  Lastly, I think there's value in observing such trends as the emergence/growth of "mixed" race as evident in this poll (21% Mixed with white alongside 68% white for a total of 89% with at least 1/2 white in them and making up the standard for hotness).

In reviewing thi comment, I inadvertantly inluced Chrisina Millian (Cuban/Black), Susie Castillo (Dominican/Puerto Rican), and Beyonce (Creole/Black) to the Mixed White/Non-White list.  My bad and the revised percentage of women who are at least 1/2 white is acutally 86% not 89%.

Must be a Younger's magazine. I picked one up a couple of years ago and it was nothing but ads and half-column "stories" with a few cheesecake pics thrown in. Didn't get why it was popular.

And I agree that the selection committee must have passed around some pretty strong hallucinogens to come up with the list they did. Both the short Latino chick from "Las Vegas" and Jessica Alba should have shared the #1 spot! Did Shu Qi even make the list? If not, they don't know "hot."

I look forward to the day when it will be damn near impossible to determine racial heritage - everything seems to look so much better blended...

by MedfordTim on 05/19/2008 10:55:35 AM EST

That is the real reason for the breakdown of the list with so many mixed ladies.  Not racism.

Current standards of beauty skew heavily to the look created when two races breed and creat a "smoothed out" hybrid look.  Remember, there was a looooong time where the paler, blonder, bluer, smaller nosed, rosier cheeked the better.   Now there seems to be a preference for skin tones and facial features that combine multiple ethnicities.  Maxim is ignorant and immature but they are more a mirror than the creators of the message.

Just my observation.

You make a great point about Maxim being "more a mirror than the creators of the message," however, I think there's more to this mixed race glamorization.  Again all races are beautiful in my mind whether mixed or not, but let's not start putting up the mix on a pedestal.

If you had your way we couldn't put any race on a pedestal!

;-)

I have been thinking about my mirror coment and wanted to clarify I think Maxim is a mirror of the "beauty" industry.  Not of the actual people's preferences.  Essentially, TV and movei producers, ad firms etc. find girls they think will sell their product.  Publicists get them into mags like Maxim and Maxim probably uses sales figures based on who is on the cover (what else could possibly drive that mags sales?) to work out a rough heirarchy.  Then uses "buzz" and "hype" to flesh that out into a ranking.  In the end, its probably about 20% who actual people find attractive and 80% who people who work in the field of turning girls into sex symbols for a living can succesfully raise the profile of.

I do have to say that I personally could not care less, but I do think that impressionable people, mostly younger (and probably the majority of the US) do look to this as a starting point for their conception of beauty so I do concede some relevance.

Rev, interesting analysis. Where did you get all that information?  I didn't look at the list, but am I correct in noting that Beyonce isn't on the list?  I am not into her at all, but she usually ranks very high on these kind of things.  Hasn't Shakira made the list in the past?  I wonder if the whitey white ratio is higher this year than, say, 5 years ago, and if that says something about the people compiling the list. Maybe they are a bunch of nativists.  All you have to do is watch one episode of Primer Impacto, the Spanish language gossip magazine TV show, and you'll have 2 or 3 more additions of Latino heritage to the top 10.

Hey Dave,

After looking at the Maxim Hot 100 List I went through every lady and noted their age, city of birth and race/ethnicity.  When I first saw the top ten, something just seemed so I thought I'd do some reasearch.  I don't think you have to be a rocket science to know that whitey still dominates mainstream culture, however, the mixed race issue was the biggest surprise for me.

Speaking of mixed race, Beyonce #14 had me a little confused since her dad's Black and her mom is of Louisian Creole descent.  Hum, I think I should probably switch her from the Mixed Black category to Black?  Don't ask me how to classify the Spanish/Italian/Lebanese Shakira since she didn't make the list this list.  Lastly, what's up with only European women making the international list?&nb sp; Boo on these Maxim chodes/pickers!

"Creole" can just as easily mean "white" - it has more to do with French ancestry than black, although there are obviously variations of every shade represented.

...kust to add a little more confusion...

I was all mixed up until I saw a photo of the mom.  She looks part Black so that pushed her over the 1/2 edge.  So according to my standards, if you don't have at least 1/2 minority in you, you're White.  If you have more than 1/2 minority in you, you get to ditch the "mixed" category and become a full-fledged person of color.  I understand why people would have problems with my guidelines, but I guess had to draw the line somewhere

Yeah...I'm too old. I'm not sure I'd remember what to do, when, for how long, or why I'm doing it.

Then, after the EMT's paddle me back to conciousness...

Not too old to enjoy beauty, by any means. There, ya got me.

Do men actually sit around and talk about who is the hottest woman they will never meet?  It's very weird.

by desertpear on 05/19/2008 02:16:14 PM EST

It makes for a longer conversation than sitting around trying to come up with names of women we actually stand a chance with.

(Like women never talk about male sex symbols. Gimme a break!)

by MedfordTim on 05/19/2008 02:35:44 PM EST

But honestly, not really very often that I have experienced.  I think there is a difference between the sexes in this regard.  Men seem more turned on by pure visuals than women.  It makes evolutionary sense.

by desertpear on 05/19/2008 03:39:01 PM EST

[ Parent ]

Lots.  But then we never sit around and obsess about what other men look like and how we stack up.

From what I can tell, we all pretty much sit around and talk about beautiful women, both genders.  You may not, but a huge percentage of both men and women do.

Think about this: What is on the cover of "Men's Magazines"?  Beautiful women.

What is on the cover of "Women's Magazines"?  Beautiful women.

As I've said this before, these women on this list aren't all that "hot."  To be honest I've met over several dozen strippers that are way hotter than these women and really know how to party.  Then again, if Kim Kardashian was on this list with a little Tina Fey action to stimulate the mind and body, we might be having a conversation.

But Tina Fey - now THERE'S someone I find incredibly sexy. I guess I prefer petite over amazon.

Evidently there is a much bigger market for a girl with a sultry face, fairly small waist and giant ass who you can watch do a black guy than anyone thought.

Not really surprised and she is nothing special to me but she definitely blows up the standard image of beauty in America.  You have to give her that.  I hate to be racialist, but being around dozens of young African American males (and females) every day, I don't find Kardasian's appeal all that surprising.  I don't know how she goes over in the blue blood neighborhoods but she has a lot of fans where I work.

And, as I alluded to earlier, making a sex tape with a black rapper has probably helped her appeal significantly among that demographic.  Y'all are aware that one of the fasted growing segments of the book market is essentially "ghetto porn" where young minority girls have a series of ludicrous erotic adventures with a string of gang bangers and rapper types.  In my mind, Kardasian is to that crowd what Fabio was the Harlequin crowd.

Chris, Mijoh, Jayar, any other black Turks, I await your denouncing and rejecting.  I am very, very sorry.

Oh, and anyone remember when Kardasian guest hosted the Absolute Truth and we had no idea who she was and everyone on the board broke out into the Jill's Hotter and Kim's Hotter camps?

I seem to remember them being about even.  Then: Kardasian Sex Tape and Kim is a superstar.

I am available for in front of or behind the camera, Jilly. I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying.

I've always thought Kim was extremely sexy (big ass and all), but her perceived snobby attitude always kept her out of my Top Five.  After seeing a number of episodes of her reality show, Living with the Kardashians, I've actually found her personality likeable though still a little annoying.  So pack your bags Jennifer Love Hewitt and welcome Kim to the list!

So let me update my list - #1 Tina Fey, #2 Jill Pike, #3 Mindy Kaling, #4 Winona Ryder, #5 Kim Kardashian.  As you can see, making my top five factors in personality and comedic/political talent as well, however as is this case with my #5, pure sex appeal can drive yourself up the list too as is this case with a number of Latina women who have made brief stints in my To Five.  I also know there's a cute Black woman/Arab women out there ready to boot Noni or Kim, but I just haven't quite found her yet.  To the internets!

BTW - I'm pretty sure you're joking about Kim guest hosting Absolute Truth, but those Kim discussions were pretty funny.  If I remember correctly, I think Kim and Jill went to the same highschool.

DP, you are not alone. There are scores of women in exactly the same horrible situation you're in. There are recovery centers for your problem, but it is strenuous and requires the strength of will normally found only in the most patient of predators.

This problem first popped up in the late 70's, declined a bit in the late 80's but roared back in the 90's and remains close to epidemic proportions today. Scores of women who got used to thinking that a low, sex-filled voice was necessary for getting their "freak" on. Bit, I'm happy to tell you, there IS hope!

The professionals here at the Barry White Center understand your pain...baby. We hire mainly baritones and basses so that every voice you hear will have those soothing tones and hypnotic cadences which made Barry's music the aural stimulator of choice...baby. We work you up slowly (we wouldn't want to rush this good thing we got goin', eh, baby?) until you can feel things again when the voice is an alto, even a tenor! Sadly, we have had no luck in bringing people all the way back to soprano comfort, even we have limitations...baby.

Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass were able to keep the problem hidden for awhile, but with screeching spandex rockers, mumbly grunge misery peddlers, and rap artists not even bothering to sing, well - you know what a drought it's been for women who enjoy velvet voiced "bedroom" singers...baby.

So, look for the Barry White center near you - look in the Yellow pages under "Baby"...baby...
