Ok Hillary fans, I know that you know the Gas Tax Holiday is a sham and the "elitist" (read: Smart People who know better) have called her and McCain on a cheap political gimmick that actually hurts the country and helps our enemies.

Most Economists (I wont say all even though 100% of the ones Ive heard comment on it are against it) are totally against the idea and shes "Bushing" her way through the naysayers.

What is really going on with your candidate?

on Meet the Press. Everybody knows that Bush will veto her proposed "windfall profits" tax. Especially Hillary, so file it under shameless pander.

What's hilarious about this deal is that in a rare moment of bewilderment, most of us outside the washington bubble, conservatives and liberals alike are trying to figure out how these two candidates (Hillary and McCain) think people are too stupid to realize that the oil companies will pass the tax along to consumers. And why shouldn't they? Barack argues that if you're lucky, and an average driver, you'll save 28$ over the summer. But most economists I've read say you won't save anything at all.

This Gas Tax Holiday proposal speaks volumes about the opponents.

The average price that taxes add to the cost of gasoline is $0.50 per gallon. Eliminating this tax can mean $7.50 in your pocket everytime you fill up.

Who could be against this?

The oil companies would just raise the prices to offset any losses.

Bush would NEVER sign off on it.

Consumption would go up hence the price of oil would go up and we'd never see that mystical $7.50.

That money is for the highway workers who maintain the roads and bridges in this country.

The American Truckers Association says:

ATA appreciates the effort and supports the proposals. But we do have concerns that any fuel tax suspension proposal could damage the already ailing Highway Trust Fund. To the extent that McCain and Snowe's proposals use general revenue funds to offset the hit to the trust fund, that concern is addressed. ATA did not ask for this legislation. And we believe it is only a very short term answer that does not do anything to address the longer term issue of rising fuel prices. ATA recognizes that rising fuel costs have a disproportionate impact on small trucking companies where even a small savings can be the difference in their staying in business.

And last but not least--theres NO economists that are for this silly idea.

Federal and state governments are under pressure to cut the gas tax.

There will be no lost revenue with respect to oil companies because nobody is agreeing to the Hillary Plan.

We're talking about lowering taxes.

We're talking about lowering taxes.

No, we are talking about letting the roads and bridges decay into dust, impacting the economy and killing more people for the sake of a tax cut.

From your reference:

In the United States, the funds are often dedicated or hypothecated to transportation, or even roads, so that the fuel tax is considered by many a user fee.

What kind of engineer did you say you were again?

This Gas Tax Holiday proposal speaks volumes about the opponents

It speaks volume about the so called TYT energy expert and his math skills....$7.50 every time I fill up...hummm lets see the Federal gas tax is 18 cents a gallon.

Wow the next time I cram 42 gallons of gas in my 10 gallon tank I can save $7.50 !!!!!

Of course the candidates have no control over state and local taxes...and you know it.

It shows what a shame economics is! Pure speculation, and expliotation through the power of massive corporations that through collusion and coordination screw the working people of the US. Does anyone actually think things are going to change as long as big oil is left untouched?
