Friday Fun Post: Favorite/Least Favorite Food(s)?

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
If you like this story, digg it!
I didn't have time to post a Friday Fun Thread last week and I have to be quick before I leave today.

What is your favorite and least favorite food(s)?

You can be as specific as "Whopper" (better than Big Mac, FYI) or as generic as "Chinese".

Preferrably you'll do both.

Now, if I could only pick ONE type of food to eat for the rest of my life (going only on taste, not health), it would be Italian, no question.  Pizzas, pastas, breads...come on, it's delicious. Someone once said "rice is better than pasta", which is ridiculous because 1)-there are so many more varieties of pasta and 2)-you don't put cheese on rice.

Least favorite?  I admit I've only had it once so I need to try it again, but it has to be African food.  I only liked the bread, that was it.  And it's hard to screw up bread.  As for specific foods, I hate fish.  I *wish* I didn't because many types are good for you (I do take fish oil BTW). I also never liked pickles, especially the soggy kind they put on burgers for no reason.

Granted, I'd hate to give up all kinds of other food, including Chinese, Thai, Indian and of course American (are burgers and fries American though?  Donuts, crazy ice cream with bits of candy bar, peanut butter or whatever else mixed in...).

Ok, your turn.  And I apologize in advance if you're dieting up for summer, but if you are, you should be eating a cheat meal a week anyway.

I have four food groups:
mushrooms, olives, cheese & ice cream.

I almost always pass on:
chocolate, hazelnut anything, and foods ruined with rosemary and/or basil.

I love a good spicy Indian food, but always taste a dish soap flavor in any Thai food I have tried.

Good bagels.  Not grocery store bagels.

Least favorite:  You're right about pickles, but I have to go with tuna fish.  For some reason the smell of it has always made me sick.  Maybe I had some tragic childhood incident involving tuna fish or something, because I really can't explain it.*  And BTW, I only mean tuna fish, not tuna THE fish, because tuna steaks are delicious.

* For the record, I originally wrote a long fictional story about my tragic childhood with tuna, but after I reached the end of chapter three, I decided my energies would be better spent elsewhere.  Like actually working, since I'm on the clock right now and all.

by Spencer on 05/09/2008 02:52:18 PM EST

Chicken wings and bagels?

Chicken wings have become real popular at sports bars but I've never, ever gotten into them.  I mean, to me it's a bunch of skin and bone, and just like my women, I like a nice big breast.  ;)

Seriously, I love chicken breast.  I'm all about the white meat.  I can't eat stuff with bone, fat and gristle.  Like John Candy who thought he had finished that giant steak in the great outdoors.

PS---Tuna in the can...makes me nauseous just thinking about it.  Very good for those wanting to lose fat and build muscle (mercury's bad but hey) but uh, just gross to me.

by ihavenobias on 05/09/2008 02:59:55 PM EST

[ Parent ]

I don't discriminate.  I love me some white meat as well, but I just can't resist a wing.  The sauce options are the thing for me.  I love a good vinegar based wing sauce.

Also, Bone,Fat, and Gristle was the name of my gang in prison.

but Chilis has these amazing boneless habanero wings with a sweet mango dipping sauce.  Very delicious.

by Spencer on 05/09/2008 03:20:31 PM EST

The bone just gets in the way, and can be gross at times.

Boneless rocks, as does O'Boobigans.

by ihavenobias on 05/09/2008 03:38:53 PM EST

[ Parent ]
But if I want "boneles wings" why don't I just go eat a nugget, or a tender, or a breast?  I don't dislike boneless, I just object to the term.  It's false marketing bullshit.  Half of the fun with wings is the project.  It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I look down at my plate and see all those bones, and nobody can take that away from me.  Nobody!

by Spencer on 05/09/2008 03:45:24 PM EST

[ Parent ]

You know the two boned type of wing.  Not the little drumetted but the other one.

I can put one of those in lengthwise, catch the starting point of the meat on my teeth and pull it out and what is left looks like bleached bone. Awesome.  My wife is a huge fan of this maneuver in public.

Can't do that with boneless.

And I agree, what exactly is the difference between a chicken nugget and a boneless wing?

I use to always go to this cheap Pakistani restaurant before it got all blown out and whenever I ordered the Tandori Chicken Breast, the guy who worked there would always ask me what size I wanted the breasts.  After a quick pause of confusion, he'd then go on to recommend the doube ds.  The second time he tried that on me just wasn't as funny.

Anyway, indian-crab-sushi shakes are super in my book.  In regards to least favorite foods, I can't stand vegetarian sloppy joes and stuffed green pepper medlies.

PS---Uttapam is very good.

Most hated: Something I consider so vile that I can't even bear to type the name. In fact, shame on you for even asking - now I'm ill.

again. It only sounds appetizing when I'm sick and can't eat anything.

One exception: Vietnamese Pho. that shit sticks to your ribs and it tastes fuckin delicious.

by hazmat on 05/09/2008 03:53:40 PM EST

[ Parent ]
I know Spencer is in CO, but do most people who dislike soup live in warmer climates?

If not, you're just crazy.  A good minnestrone, or chedder, potato and bacon soup with some fresh baked bread to dip?  Come on, it's fuckin' delicious.

by ihavenobias on 05/09/2008 07:35:46 PM EST

[ Parent ]
Its not that I can't eat them, its just that, like Spencer said, I don't feel like I've eaten anything substantial. Many people, including my wife, find a nice bowl of soup perfectly acceptable for dinner.  Not me. Even you admit you have to eat it with bread.

by hazmat on 05/10/2008 07:39:34 PM EST

[ Parent ]
It just goes from "good" to "fuckin' delicious" with bread.

You're telling me you can eat a bowl of potato, bacon and cheddar soup and not feel as though you've eaten anything?

Besides, it's not like soup is the main course, it's generally an appetizer.  I don't sit down and eat a meal comprised of mozzarella sticks, but they sure do taste good as an appetizer.

by ihavenobias on 05/10/2008 08:34:52 PM EST

[ Parent ]

"Besides, it's not like soup is the main course, it's generally an appetizer."

"It just goes from 'good' to 'fuckin' delicious' with bread."--but its still not a meal.

I think you're vigorously agreeing with me.

The worst is Chinese/Thai places that deliver you fried/breaded chicken dishes with the meat soaking up the sauce.

I HATE that.

A *good* restaurant will give you a separate container to ensure the chicken stays nice and cripsy, not gross and soggy.

served in a stone bowl, with a rice cake that has been in the oven with said bowl.

Now the waiter brings the smoldering stone bowl to the table with a tourine of crab and white asperagus soup and pours it over the rice cake.  It crackles and spits, and then is served in small ceramic bowls.  In the right Vietnamese resterant, presesntation and everything is under 6 bucks.

F>*#@ing awesome.

I love gourmet Chinese, but I have to make it myself since I don't live anywhere near a chinatown these days.  My absolute favorite is Fragrant Crispy Duck, which takes about two days to make.  Once it is done marinating, steaming, and deep frying whole, you can even eat the bones.  mmmmm.

Least favorite is my friend's cooking. She thinks "chile" is two cans of kidney beans, a can of tomato sauce, and a chopped onion.  Food like this is not even worth eating.

I admit being a total food snob after living near Berkeley's "gourmet ghetto" for many years.  Right now I'm too busy to cook and so I'm experimenting with eating odd superfoods.

by desertpear on 05/09/2008 03:45:50 PM EST

Not your friends crap.  But real chili.  (and chili does not have beans.  That is called Chili and Beans.)

Hate beans in my goddammned chili.

by ProfRich on 05/09/2008 04:25:32 PM EST

No way.  Beans make it much more satisfying, otherwise it's just called "ground beef with sauce".

Roasted for about ten minutes and then peeled and processed with water into a paste.

Now, cook down some cubed beef, onions and fresh cilantro, add chile paste and stock, cook for hours.

Tellin' me you'd add beans to that???

BTW - Pinto beans with onions and spinach on the side are awesome.

My Texas friend here in Mass says there's this stuff that comes in a can, it's called "Ro-gaine" or something similar, made out of chilis and you mix it with Velveeta and heat it up to make this goop that Texans just love. She says it's "larruping" (Texas for "good"). I think she may be "funning" me. Verdict?

by ashbul on 05/09/2008 11:14:34 PM EST

[ Parent ]

I have never heard those words (at least used like that)

But yes, we Texans put Ro-Tel (diced tomatoes and chilis) and Velveeta in a crock pot and dip corn chips (Tostitos, NOT Fritos) in it.  Its called Chili con Queso (which is Mexican for chilis with cheese). You can throw some ground beef in there if you want.  Throw some Guacamole and Salsa on the table and you have yourself a party.  Try it sometime.

Actually, the better cheese for this is the white processed cheese but I bet that is hard to find up north.  Regular Velveeta will work fine.

To be honest though, I am not a big fan but pretty much the entire rest of the southwest US is.

I have no idea what larupping is.  Is she an Aggie?

by ProfRich on 05/10/2008 12:01:01 AM EST

[ Parent ]

Not an Aggie. From Dallas. Maybe "larruping" (my spelling) is regional, or (more likely) she made it up and is putting me on. Thinks she's clever. But thanks for the recipe. Now I think about it, Rogaine is a hair restorer. Probably explains why the Ro-Tel I've been putting on my dome isn't working.

of Chili Con Queso ater grocery stores everywhere, in those little glass jars, usually next to the salsa in chips sections.

That reminds me, my favorite store brand salsa is On The Border.  And no, I don't shop at Sam's Club.  But I do buy avocados and I love Guacamole.

Sadly, too many tortilla chips give me heartburn.

Not the deep-fried, batter coated chicken breast chunks that are coated in sweet vinegar sauce with a little chile.  No way.

Chicken thighs that are marinated in soy and rice vinegar and chile and GARLIC.  Then, said chicken thigh chunks are dredged in flour and deep fried.  Then, wok with hot oil is hit with garlic, then chicken chunks, toss, then marinade and lots of fresh chopped green onions.

Serve with rice.  Fucking  awesome - my desert island food.
