Planet Green TV/Sundance Channel

I was just listening to a bit of some of the comments made on the show about PGTV.  I, for one, am addicted to it.

You can certainly pick on Living with Ed (with Ed Begley, Jr.), although I think it's pretty funny in a weird way.  Not the best show, but it's entertaining.

But there are other shows that are really good.  Two shows that comes to mind are Wa$ted and G-Word, which, for me, have been eye openers to some of our habits that affect the environment.  There's also a show called World's Greenest Homes, which is pretty cool.  Do NOT watch Renovation Nation because the host is annoying.

I also watch The Green on Sundance Channel, which I find to be awesome.  The Green consists of two shows - Big Ideas for a Small Planet and some sort of documentary.  The entire segment is produced by Robert Redford.

If you are concerned about climate change at all, you should definitely check out my suggestions for PGTV and Big ideas for a Small Planet on Sundance.  It's good stuff.

The only problem I have with Robert Redford is that any time I see him I can't help thinking of the movie, "The Sting" and the song starts playing in my head. I used to have this recurring dream/nightmare as a child (I know I know, too much info already, you don't need to hear my psychoanalysis) and no matter what happened good in the dream or what time period the dream was taking place in it would always revert back to the '20's and that music would start playing and then I'd find out I was the victim of a Sting...Dadada da da....

Of course this was pre-punked, dating myself. Other than that he's great. Thanks for the info on the shows, I've just seen the ones on PBS with Brad Pitt (who is the next Redford according to Google Image search - more random - and useless -knowledge) but I wasn't even aware the Green shows on Sundance.

Does Small Planet have anything to do with "Diet for a" or is it just a similar title. Great book (from another era) if you aren't familiar with it. And the cookbook that goes along with it, time for people to take another look at both of them. The way we're clear cutting forest in Brazil for grazing, and the way we're using soybean to feed livestock, horrible.

I just took a stroll through their website, since I don't "do" tv.  It's totally the parallel of a sports channel for eco-groovy stuff.  Since I am in the sciences, it looks a little basic to me (how to eat local, how to buy a green car, folding bicycles), but you know, there are a lot of people interested in making less of a negative impact on the planet right now, so I say give them all the tools and information they need.  Many people don't even know where their meat and vegetables come from, let alone the fast food and processed foods and the toxic plastics they are wrapped in.  Many don't want to know, but for those who do, I think it is awesome that they have some entertainment to educate them (edutainment?).  Half of a scientist's battle is just fighting basic ignorance of the general public, so I'm all for it even if I am probably not going to watch it.  The Green Revolution may be coming.  It could be really good for the economy I think.  We need to move on from our unsustainable ways and change before we are forced to change.

What I think is the best quality of these shows is not the entertainment factor, but more of the education angle.  It tells you how "going green" can be user-friendly.  Most people think that to be green is to buy solar panels, a fuel-efficient vehicle or their own personal wind turbine.  There's so much more to it.  It also introduces the viewer to companies that are making huge strides in being environmentally friendly - like Google, Lexus and Citibank, among others.  Maybe you don't like the format, the content is worth the watch...

This is my signature.
