Mccain is so palpably bad a campaigner that he is now inducing a congenital wince among Republicans. The need for a fake town hall meeting stacked with supporters is strong evidence of his desperation. It is as if Bush were campaigning for President at the end of his second term. Mccain himself knows it's this bad, which makes it even worse, and the whole thing is turning into a nose dive. This is dangerous. Nature abhors a vacuum, and once the media is no longer able to keep up the pretense that there is a real election battle, the pressure for war or assassination will be almost ineluctable.
