Rush’s little compare and contrast of the current flooding in the Midwest to Katrina reminded me of something, which is the way evangelicals typically respond to catastrophe – natural or man-made. You may remember Falwell blamed pagans, “abortionists,”
feminists, gays and lesbians, the ACLU, People For the American Way, and “all of them who have tried to secularize America” for the 11 September Terror Attacks. And who can forget the reaction of conservative evangelicals to Katrina: Many theorized it was God’s punishment. (See, for instance, Alabama State Senator Hank Erwin’s interview on Fox).
So here is my question: If God is behind bad stuff happening because, as Falwell’s put it, HE “removed HIS protective curtain,” than why are people being “punished” in the “Heartland?” What did they do wrong? I mean, by the conservative evangelical’s rationale, catastrophe means someone is being punished, right? Hmmm, looking at the election map on CQ, I seem to see a correlation between Red districts and flooded areas. That must mean God is punishing Republicans. And if that is so, that must mean God is a Democrat. And if God is a Democrat, that must mean he wants Obama to win. Therefore, God must want you to vote for Obama. As you can plainly see, the logic here is flawless.
I know this is a really messed up little posting and I don’t mean to make light of people’s suffering but why is it OK to for conservative evangelical nut jobs with delusions of eschatological grandeur to throw this crap at other people, but not rigorously and introspectively apply that very methodology towards themselves
