My Mother and Obama

So I had a asado (Uruguayan BBQ) today in my honor for graduating...and somehow the topic of the US election came up. The discussion revolved around Obama, I was pretty shocked at my own mother said (translated from Spanish):

M: Mother
T: Aunt
N: Me

M: I don't know about that Obama.
T: Why?
M: Well, being a Muslim and a homosexual.
N: What you are talking about!
M: I read all about it
T:  He is not Muslim, he went to that Church for 20 years
N: Mami, you read that in the NATIONAL INQUIRER thats all propaganda
M: If it wasn't true, they would have been sued already

Ok...that is only part of the conversation, I was truly in shock that my own mother believed that garbage! I  read the article, as it was in the washroom for "bathroom reading". So basically, it argued from some obscure black pastor that Obama is a homosexual (getting a blow job in a limo during his stint as senator in Ill.), that Oprah is also a homosexual, that Obama is really a Muslim (as evidence they used the picture of Obama in Kenyan garb), and the garbage just piled on. Of course, I read it for the jokes, but I could not believe my own mother bought into it! This makes me wonder, how many Americans believe this crap! Scares teh living shit out of me, but here is the silver lining:

N: Bueno Obama es mejor de McCain (Well, Obama is better than McCain)
M: Por supuesto que si! (Of course he is!)

Whew!

Here’s what Nick said about an anti-Obama voter in the header of this thread:
“I personally want to smack down the woman in white, her ignorance is so typically Republican that seeing it in the flesh makes you want to yak.”

Here’s what Nick said about his mother in this thread:
“I was truly in shock that my own mother believed that garbage!”

I'm somewhat surprised he didn’t smack his mother down.

My mother is NOT a Republican, even though she had all those fucked up ideas...she STILL would rather vote for Obama than McCain! So...no need to smack down anyone :).

I really had no idea of the scope of ignorance in America until the internets made it possible for them to speak up.  Now the fact that an African-American is running for president has flushed up all the racists.  Growing up in Oregon, I'm afraid I wasn't exposed to this sentiment much.
