Cenk is my hero

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
I was happy to see Cenk so forceful about religion with someone that obviously is very close minded.

I have just listened to Cenk tear apart "DR." Jerry Newcomb of Coral Ridge Ministries on Monday's show and Cenk is 100% right and 0% wrong when talking about Jesus being based on the Sun and the 12 astrological signs.
If there is any doubt about if jesus was a real person they need to check out the movie Zeitgeist. Here is the link to Google video http://video.google.com/vid eoplay?docid=-5946838477431 89197&q=zeitgeist+full+ movie&ei=cg1hSPmFGI3O4g K0n9jPAg&hl=en

The egyptians have The Ritual Book Of Resurrection which is exactly have the same story as the christian Bible except it was written 15 centuries before the Bible.

Horace in the egyptian The Ritual Book Of Resurrection version is then adopted and used as the basis for Jesus in the Bible. The virgin Isis was impregnated by the holy ghost Neff and then the virgin birth followed by the worship of Horace (Jesus). There is much more but, I will let the movie and Cenk give them the business.

But based on many of the youtube comments, a lot of people didn't. In fact, a lot of people were really pissed off.

Like Cenk said, questioning someones beliefs seems to inspire a unique and strong backlash and I completely agree with him that it's based on insecurity.

Of course if you point that out people get even MORE pissed off and MORE defensive.

I even saw a couple of commenters say that he sounded like Bill O'Reilly.   If you think that's as ridiculous as I do, make sure you go the youtube clip, give it a 5 star rating and add your own, supportive comment.

Jesus studied Egyptian religion as well as Eastern philosophy.

Also, Buddha, who predates Jesus by five centuries, had a virgin birth and taught the whole "love your enemy" that Jesus allegedly invented.  Walked on the Ganges too.

Don't you know that facts are the most intolerant things when it comes to religious beliefs?

Show some tolerance and leave your facts, logic and reason at the door the next time you join a discussion on religion. Otherwise it's just plain disrespectful.

But the worst religions in the history of mankind are liberalism (aka totalitarianism) and environmentalism.

Ken is uniquely qualified to comment here because his home state is host to a whole lot of foolish religious activity.  Observe:

Polygamy cult in Eldorado, Texas

Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas

UFO cult in Garland, Texas

Blue Oyster Cult live in El Paso, Texas

Thought we were talking about the historical reality of Jesus and/or Cenk's heroism.

Didn't realize this was a bout religion.

I reject and denounce myself, facts, history and all the sciences.

NOW we can have a tolerant, respectful discussion on Jesus and religion.

ALL civilizations which reached a modicum of "civilisation" had some form of the "Golden Rule" - not the GREED one, the one which suggest that one do unto others as they would have done.

Gotta wonder - what is it about "gods" and 12 year old vigns? What's up with that? And why would anyone want to follaow a church based on such an event?

by MedfordTim on 06/24/2008 02:21:34 PM EST

That would be "virgins," not "Vegans"....

Of course, at that time virgin just meant unmarried girl.

I don't know why that is so hard for people to grasp but that was the definition.

The story of Jesus makes a little more sense if you say an "umarried girl" got pregnant than if  you say "a girl who never had sex" got pregnant.

Believe me, I teach high school.  An umarried girl getting pregnant is not that much of a miracle.

Girls who swear they have never had sex but are nontheless pregnant are much rarer.  I have only had two of those in class.

I'm with you there, Tim.  You would think a god would know that virgins are lousy lays.  Give me experience every single time.

It's about time somebody stopped being polite with some of these charlatans and called them out on their hypocrisy.  That particular person deserved the interview he got.  I would have respected a person who had more intellectual juice behind his or her arguments, but this was someone who seemed to be blatantly and selectively interpreting the bible for political purposes.

I was looking for something else on Obama in the New Yorker archives and found this from an interview with him in November 2006:

"I think this is the historical moment we’re in—we have come to define religion in absolutist, fundamentalist terms. So to be a believer is to be a fundamentalist in some fashion. And I guess what I was trying to describe is a faith that admits doubt, and uncertainty, and mystery. Because, ultimately, I think that’s how most people understand their faith. In fact, it’s not faith if you’re absolutely certain. There’s a leap that we all take, and, when you admit that doubt publicly, it’s a form of testimony. Then what I think it does is it allows both the secular and the religious to find some sort of common space where we say to each other, Well, I may not believe exactly what you do, what you believe, but I share an experience in wondering what does my life mean, or I understand the desire for a connection to something larger than myself. And that, I think, is in the best of the United States religious tradition."

Jesus was horribly tortured, tortured to death-- crucified.  There is not a person who can call themselves Christian who would tolerate torture.  Dobson and all the hucksters aren't Christian or they would have their congregations in the street demanding the end to what Christ himself suffered.  The Bible is clear about the horror and crime of torture.  Abortion is a creature of medical science advancing beyond the capacity for simple minds to comprehend.  Don't get drawn into abortion debates, when the central tenement of Christianity is the torture which Christ and his followers endured.  If you vote for torture, take the symbol of the fish off your car and change the name of your church to Pontius Pilate Ministries.
Let's hear Rev. Jayar on this.

My brother sent me this just yesterday:

Christianity:

The belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.

by bfaul on 06/24/2008 05:29:13 PM EST

We're going to publish that and call it "Christianity For Dummies"(TM)

We'll flesh it out with a foreward from Cenk and some pictures (maybe pop-ups of the tree with the snake, etc.).

I'm generous so I'll go 60/40 with you.

Deal?

You're an awful businessman I see. I try to cut you in and this how you respond?

You need that killer instinct. Mine shmine! It's yours if you TAKE it! It says so in the Old Testament, right after the chapter on gay marriage.

I must admit that when I heard Cenk tear into Dr Newcomb I just wanted to give him a big hug!

by seannieboy on 06/24/2008 08:05:24 PM EST

It just makes me warm and fuzzy all over when I hear someone like Dr. Newcombe ripped up like that. Go Cenk!

I think it's about time for an athiest revolution in this country (europe is well on their way). Most estimates are that, in the US, there are more athiest/agnostics (AA) than jews, more AAs than muslims, more AAs than blacks, more AAs than hispanics, more AAs than GLBTs and approaching as many AA's as fundamentalists. If this herd of cats could get politically organized we would truely be a force to be reconed with.

I know this is not really Cenks fight of choice, but I'd bet a huge % of his audience  agrees with him on this issue - even though most may still be in the closet.

For those geekier of us, the last two years The Science Network hosted discussions at the Salk Institute with many of the great science and philosophy minds of our time. The Beyond Belief: Science, Religion, Reason and Survival and Beyond Belief: Enlightenment 2.0 conferences elevate the sophistication level from the rock throwing of the past to a truely intellectually honest discussion. I encourage you to go look at the speaker lists and at least sample some of the talks.
