Missouri says: 300 - THIS IS OBAMAAAA!

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

Barack Obama is about to secure the Democratic nomination - Associated Press have already called it for Obama, too. Hillary Clinton will hold a speech in New York tonight where she will either drop out and endorse Obama, or acknowledge his victory but say that she will fight on anyway. (That last option would be Hell for Hillary.)

How's things going for John McCain and his post-primary honeymoon season? Not doing too well - now losing Missouri, according to a new SurveyUSA poll.

Barack Obama 45% John McCain 43%

Only 2 points. Not a very convincing lead - but a lead nonetheless. Missouri have 11 electoral votes, putting Obama up to 300 electoral votes if the election would be held today.

Feel free to add your own "300"-themed "THIS IS SPARTAAAA!"-style pictures with Obama or John McCain here.

They absolutely did NOT. Check your history.

But I bet you are wrong anyway.

The Spartans objective was to bloody the Persians to the point Greece was safe.  The objective was never to win that battle.

They saved Greece and therefore they won.

Otherwise we have to say Ken and George are right and the pile of dead bodies in Iraq means we are winning.

The 300 Spartans in the movie (and the comic) DO die in the end, but you're right that that was kind of the point.  I'm just saying that I hope Obama doesn't have to get slaughtered by the Iranians to save the rest of us.

and then they won what was their version of the cold war against Athens.  But, like most of the warrior peoples who came into power by force, they were unable to hold their empire.  The reason being, they couldn't adapt to new realities, and Epaminondas punished them for it.  They didn't take any notice from that disaster, and were eventually relegated to a side story of history by Alexander, the Antigonids, Romans, and just about every other regional power around them, until Sparta itself ceased to exist in any real fashion.  They met the same state as all of other arrogant city sates in the region, because they could not accept peace.  After facing existential threats to their collective culture, and beating incredible odds, they tossed aside the peace dividend and simply kept preparing for the next enemy.  And there always someone or something else out there that can be made into an enemy. I always thought the story of Athens and Sparta and their allies bore a striking resemblance to the our last century or so of history.  There is a lot to learn there.

But Thermopylae has to be considered a victory, right?

I do think it is kind of funny that if Leonidas would have listened to the religious fundamentalists at home, he might never have gone to thermopylae.  It's also kind funny that the very qualities that allowed them to acheive what happend at thermopylae were some of the same qualities that doomed them in the end.
