that you will be moving to Spain soon?

by MRFred on 06/30/2008 01:22:52 AM EST

Kudos to Spain and my hero Jane Goodall.  After all, apes are one of our closest relatives.

"Fine, I evolved, you didn't."

by desertpear on 06/30/2008 01:34:02 AM EST

This one's a tough sell, though.  You're slipping.

by jarett on 06/30/2008 02:33:59 AM EST

Or better yet, if a male gorilla loves another male gorilla, can THEY get married in Spain? How about adopting children?

Lets take this one step further - if a Male Gorilla loves a female human, can they get married? Vice Versa?

What if the ape loves a monkey? Being recognized as having Human Rights, can they be together? Where does that leave the monkeys rights (for all of you nimwits, monkeys and apes are not the same)

What if someone Libels the Ape by calling it a monkey in the local newspaper - Can the ape sue the newspaper? If it has Human Rights, it could? Wouldnt it?

Now I know that the Spanish thing is symbolic and it makes tree huggers and Jane Goodall feel good about their lifes work, but really people, do we need to have the slippery slope discussion here?

What in the Hell are the people thinking? Apes with Human rights - They are not Humans. Period. You cannot have rights unless you cant assert them - Unless a human steps in to assist, Gorillas, Chimps and other Apes cannot assert their rights in soceity. Therefore, they have no rights, especially Human Rights!!!

Relativism run amok... My goodness people - get your heads out of your asses and start thinking about where this insanity could lead?

:(

"You cannot have rights unless you cant assert them - Unless a human steps in to assist, Gorillas, Chimps and other Apes mentally retarded or 4 year olds cannot assert their rights in soceity. Therefore, they have no rights, especially Human"

So I presume you reject that mentally retarded and 4 year old do not have rights since they cannot speak out for themselves to defend their rights. I publicy denounce and reject you

Wasn't Ken the same person who was claiming that Europe was embracing conservatism with open arms  not too long ago?

I could find that link where Ken put up pictures of all those European leaders shaking Bush's hand but is it worth my time?

They went socialist after the terrorist bombing. Al Qaeda approved of the move and they considered it tribute. That's how they would read an Obama election. Victory.

And repudiate Israel, and convert to Islam, then we too can be safe, for a while, until they find out we became Shia rather than Sunni.

Face it, empirical evidence rejects the entire premise of the McCain campaign and the Bush presidency.

by the way you think Texas Ken is the gay cowboy version? poor Barbie :)

by callisto on 06/30/2008 11:39:30 AM EST

again they're taking it over the top and making a mockery of the issue.

1. apes don't get the same rights as humans
2. when you think it's the first time animals get rights, you're an idiot, animals already have rights

eg if you torture animals, you will be punished

by callisto on 06/30/2008 11:49:43 AM EST

Or at least they are against the intrusive overbearing government infringing on their right to torture animals.

by ProfRich on 06/30/2008 12:23:55 PM EST

It would be kind of silly to support torture of human beings and oppose torture of animals, huh?

so true

hey, at least one equality that the cons defend: torture for anyone, who isn't us

If you torture a shrimp, by boiling it in water, will you be punished? If you torture a rat, by catching it in a trap, and allowing it to die a slow agonizing death, will you be punished? If you torture a deer, by shooting it, and gutting it, will you be punished? I can go on and on.

that's because people like you and there are way too many in the US, people, who in other parts of the Western world are called extremists, who make it possible for monsters as Bush to even defend these positions

should you be punished?  Not will a spineless group of cowards fail to punish you.

Torture of farm animals and lab animals and possible terrorists is in America's interests.

by desertpear on 06/30/2008 02:51:08 PM EST

[ Parent ]
1. you don't seem to understand the difference between killing and torturing (shrimp, deer)
2. if you systematically torture the rat and the authorities find out, yes they will, true probably more because they think you're gone nuts, but still
some authorities and animal groups will ask you to use better rat traps

so you really think any non-extreme-animal-rights people would have qualified those as animal abuse, I mean really, on what planet are you living?

by callisto on 06/30/2008 03:06:01 PM EST

[ Parent ]

Could explain your interest in animal torture.

For your education, here are Texas' anti-cruelty laws. There are felony statutes in place for relevant acts of cruelty.

I used to hunt deer, rabbit, duck, quail, goose, dove as a kid. I was a good shot with a 30-30, 22, 12 gauge, 410.

Now I feed deer with a timer spreader. I no longer hunt anything.

I will kill a rattlesnake or a bobcat or a javelina or a trouble making coyote.

This is the really funny part: I can't even watch those nature shows where one animal eats another animal!

But if somebody wants to boil a shrimp, or filet a fish, or trap a rat, or boil a crab or kill a deer, I'm cool with it. I just don't want them to kill my deer.

I don't get a kick out of killing animals. But I am much more troubled by animal rights activists than I am by hunters.

Who the hell is hunting gorillas?

How do you prepare a gorilla?

What the hell does this have to do with the topic?

Oh, and Ken says he is a good shot but I hear not near as good as his daddy.

Illegal hunting is one of the gorilla's main threats in Africa.  They are hunted for bushmeat and for live animal trafficking.

Although labeled "domestic terrorists," they haven't killed anyone.  The extreme groups are pretty much shunned by your average animal welfare promoter (like me) because their tactics are as unproductive as Timothy McVeigh's bombing.

Plus, if the FBI had been paying attention to real threats, 9-11 may not have happened.

"The FBI's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has also questioned the department's "ecoterrorism" priorities. In a 2003 report, the OIG recommended that the FBI take its anti-terrorist staff off of environmental and animal rights property crimes to focus on more serious threats. "To the extent that the FBI seeks to maximize its counterterrorism resources to deal with radical Islamic fundamentalist terrorism, WMD, and domestic groups or individuals that may seek mass casualties, we believe that FBI management should consider the benefit of transferring responsibility for criminal activity by social activists to the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division." The FBI refused to alter its priorities.

In that sense, not much has changed since 9/11 at the FBI. While al Qaeda was planning to crash airliners into the nation's largest buildings, the FBI was focused on "ecoterrorism." Six months before the mass casualties, then FBI director Louis Freeh testified to a congressional committee on terrorism threats, giving about the same amount of time to environmental and animal rights groups as he gave to Osama bin Laden and Middle-East terrorist groups."

You might rethink feeding your deer.  It is a good way for disease to spread (e.g., chronic wasting disease).
