Barack Obama: "Mr Teleprompter"

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
Back in 2004, Republicans figured out that if we sunk John Kerry's Swiftboat, then he had nothing else. He was naked and alone. He served in Vietnam for 90 days, and he somehow won three Purple Hearts without shedding a drop of blood. This was all his campaign offered: "I'm John Kerry, and I served in Vietnam."

All Barack Obama offers is an ability to read from a teleprompter. It's time to have a national conversation about teleprompters.

Why does everyone claim that Obama is so great without a teleprompter? Without a script to recite, he sounds like a dumbass.

"Dumbass" is kind of harsh. But without a teleprompter, he reminds me of one of the Lil Rascals characters. I just can't remember which one?

"Dumbass" is kind of harsh.

I call it like I see it. Obama sounds like a dumbass in the video clip I linked.

I was recently reading about President Reagan. I realized that it had been awhile since I heard more than the "tear down this wall" sound bite. I searched for video or audio of Reagan speaking. I came across an interesting audio file recorded at some bill signing ceremony. The press asked questions about a wide range of subjects and Reagan was on the ball and easily answered them. Reagan is not usually considered to be one of our smarter presidents, but neither Obama nor McCain compares favorably with Reagan.

Reagan wrote his own speeches,he was 80 years old, and suffering from Stage IV Alzheimers. Yet he sounded a million times more intelligent than Barack Obama.

Then who the hell is that creepy disciple lady who worshipped him and is all over the news who is called his speechwriter?

Peggy Noonan, thats it.  And do Dana Rohrbacher and Peter Robinson know about this?  Because they all claimed to have written Ronnie's speeches.

by ProfRich on 06/16/2008 02:38:54 PM EST

Obama writes some of his speeches, just like Reagan did.

And like I keep saying, this is now a binary equation.  Obama or McCain.

Who says stupid shit more?

Who looks stupider without a teleprompter?

Who is a worse natural speaker?

If Obama has to run against Reagan but McCain gets the vote, I demand McCain run against FDR!

Or we could settle on Bill Clinton.  We could even arrange a debate.

It was fuggin AWFUL. all the pundits agreed including the conservative one that it was the worst speech of the 3 that night. Hillarys speech was way better than his. Obamas was amazing.. out of the ball park.

I saw a video of McLame speaking into the WRONG end of a microphone he was speaking into the antena.. I doubt if he could even figure out how to read a teleprompter.

Did you guys notice during McCain's speech, that there was obviously a campaign worker prompting the audience (of about 10 people) when to boo.  He would make some lame jab in the same monotone and one person was always out front with a loud "BOOO" and then the rest of the "crowd" would wake up and start booing also.

Man, McCain is going to get CREAMED.  It'll be so bad by November that some people will vote for him just out of pity.  Sorry Ken, but they could have video of Obama having sex with Reverend Wright in Saddam's guest bedroom and McCain would lose to "undeclared".&nbs p;

It was just awful.  As bad as any "major speech" I have ever heard from a presidential candidate.

It was like watching a train wreck.  His delivery, his Beavis and Butthead laugh at his own stupid jokes, his message that his 74 year old, three decades in Congress, member of the current ruling party is the candidate of change?
We need change! Like more deregulation!

Dear God, any sane conservative should be huddled in a corner shivering after watching the three speeches last night.

Also, a major point that I haven't heard mentioned is this: Why the hell was McCain giving a major speech last night?  He had no primary, no natural event hook, no logical reason at all.

The reason he did it is becuase trying to crowd in on the Dems air time is the only way he can draw any attention at all. If McCain announced a major speech for, say, this Thursday it might beat out a couple of infomercials for ratings.  The only way anyone is even going to realize he is still alive, much less running for president is to try to get a little splash-off of the Obama show by getting as close to Barak as possible.

Why did he want to campaign with Barak?  Because he is the invisible man otherwise.  I think McCain even scheduling that speech was an admission of desperation, personally.

In the last 60 years, a political party has managed to win the White House three times in a row only once. The year was 1988. Today, we are witnessing the classic "Eight Year Itch". If the GOP must lose, the best person to lose to is Barack Obama. He's like Jimmy Carter, except he's a million times worse. a) Ken doesn't like his energy policy because it doesn't consist of dril everything everywhere.

b) Like every single presidential candidate in history with the exception of John McCain (remember Bush ran as a consensus builder) Obama believes in diplomacy.  Like Reagan, he believes in talking to Iran.

c) Ken believes he will win and lose reelection in a landslide.

So what this amounts to is Obama is like Carter because Ken says so.

Whatever.

Some day the history books will read like this.

Regan started the modern conservative movement in America in the 1980's. The end came when George W Bush became president in 2000 and won re election in 2004. Bush's anti American views on foreign policy and individual privacy issues caused the American people to pay attention to politics more than they have in the last 40 years and they did not like what they saw. In the 2008 election, the Republican party had no chance in the House and Senate elections and the only person within the party who had a chance to win the presidential election was a man named John McCain. McCain was known as a political wind sock within his own party who would do anything and repeatedly change his position on any issue to get positive feed on the American news and special interest groups. This strategy gave gave him the persona of a Republican "Maverick" with the greater American populous.

That is a simple break down but whatever happens it is not going to be good for modern Republicans.

Ken

What a completely asinine post.  Teleprompters are used all the time by more than just politicians.

If GW used a teleprompter more, maybe he wouldn't make as many idiotic statements as he does, assuming, of course, he could read words with more than 2 syllables.  Moreover, McCain sure could have used one last night.  In fact, his teleprompter should be new technology that edits stupid and inaccurate comments rather than advertise "insert creepy smile here".

Really, Ken, this post of yours is a waste of virtual ink.

Ever write a speech? Ever give a speech that you've written yourself? Soap opera stars can memorize their lines in a day, but they don't write them. When you write a good speech, it helps to have notes and text in front of you so you don't leave anything out. Barack Obama uses a teleprompter to glance at and read the words he wrote himself that day or a day earlier.

Teleprompters aren't so good for Dumbya. He can't read so many words at one time. Can McCain even see the words? Does McCain write his own speeches?

by zenie on 06/04/2008 11:50:22 AM EST

yesterday was that Hillary should wait until McCain started to speak and then come in to concede (can't believe she didn't) so McBush would get no airtime at all. It worked out much better this way, McBush looking the fool (in his defence, it does take a while to chip out those prompter tablets with a wooden mallet) and being contrast against Obama's speaking talents.

by desertpear on 06/04/2008 01:14:29 PM EST

I'm from the speech-making camp that thinks better speeches are the ones that aren't fully written up ahead of time, but I think the teleprompter is a factor of the 24 hour news cycle, where if you misspeak anything it gets blown totally out of proportion.  On the other hand, Obama has performed without a prompter on many many occassions, but not when the world is watching.

McCain may be the worst teleprompter user in history.  Here's the audience during one of his speeches in Iowa:

MORT KONDRACKE: Well, John McCain had better start working on his speechmaking and learn how to use a teleprompter. I mean, the gap, the rhetorical gap between this speech and...Oratorical gap between this speech and John McCain’s was vast. John McCain sounded old. This sounded fresh and new and exciting and visionary. And he was enlisting the country to join him in a great cause. This is our moment, all of that.
