Unelected ideologues are key

I just listened to Cenk's homage to Dick Cheney from yesterday's show and his pledge to spend the next twenty years figuring out how to get the power to change Washington as much as Cheney did.  It may be that putting an unelected ideologue as close as possible to the executive is the key.

Not subject to reelection pressure, not obligated to talk to the press or public, these actors can devote all their energy to their agenda(s).  Are there any contenders for this spot on our side?  Agency and executive office staffers form the less-obvious pool, and would draw little attention (no name recognition).  And I think the American public and press generally underestimate staff influence on outcomes.
