McCain's Packers/Steelers 'confusion'

I'm amazed that McCain switching the Steelers for the Packers isn't getting more notice.

McCain said, while giving an interview in Pittsburgh, that he recited the names of Steelers players instead of Packers players while trying to survive as a POW.

Is he so senile now that he just doesn't remember what happened while he was held as a POW?  Or is it more likely that he was pandering to the voters in the Pittsburgh area? If no one noticed would he have told an interviewer in San Diego that he recited the names of the Chargers?

While I give him all the respect due to him for the man he was, the fact that he would change the details of his imprisonment and torture to pander for votes took any respect I had left for him away. How heroic is it to change your POW story to pander for votes?  Honestly, it turns my stomach.

If it turns out that he's senile, then I can forgive this 'gaffe'.  Right now, I don't understand the lack of disgust over his 'mistake'.

Actually, I think that there is an even bigger problem with this quote.  Yes, he is probably trying to pander to those in Pittsburgh (like me); however, in talking about the Steelers defensive line he is obviously talking about the great lines of the mid to late 70's (Greene, Greenwood, Holmes, White, Banasak etc.).  Unfortunately, all of these players started playing for the Steelers in the 70's after he was released!

This being the case....I certainly hope that he was just pandering.  If he wasn't that means that he is remembering something that didn't happen.

Then again maybe the Steelers played in Czechoslovakia or the Iraq-Pakistan border.

My big issue is that he's using his POW 'memories' to pander with.  I just think it's disgusting and shows his utter lack of integrity.

First, this really seems like the kind of thing that could destroy his credibility with all those blue collar beer drinkin' Joe Sixpack midwest voters we hear so much about.  I am a huge football fan.  My first reaction wasn't even political.  My first reaction was "That makes no sense.  Mean Joe and Co. weren't even there yet."

If I reacted that way, imagine how Joe Sixpack in PA, OH and MI reacted.  I am pretty sure they remember those Ds.

Second, this is a showcase example for why McCain should be happy everyone is obsessed with Obama.  If he got any iota of attention from the media everyone would know his campaign is like that old NFL Films about the 0-16 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  I really think we should all be talking about how truly awful a campaign he is running and how pathetic a candidate he is.  It is the most underreported story in politics.

Think about this.  Obama just had a wildly succesful meeting with the leaders of Iraq and Afghanistan.  While those meetings were occuring, McCain was getting humiliated by Meredith Viera.  And we should vote for McCain because he is going to be so much better with foriegn leaders?  Either I am waaaaaay underestimating Meredith Viera are we are being sold a bill of goods here.
