Obama surprised that military loves FoxNews

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
If you like this story, digg it!
Barack Obama recently spent some quality time with U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan for the first time in...a very long time. Does anyone know how many times Obama visited mil itary forces in Iraq and Afghanistan prior to this trip?

Has he ever been before?

Anyway, I digress.

Obama was surprised that FoxNews was playing on every television he saw, at every military installation he visited.

Armed Forces Radio and Televison network surveys the troops to determine what they want. Evidently, they prefer a Fair and Balanced approach to news reporting.

Obama was surprised that FoxNews was broadcast on every base, because he doesn't visit military bases.
< BUSH WHOOPING IT UP WHILE AMERICA SUFFERS. | Gulp! Uh oh...Obama may regret saying that... >

because it is the only Cable News channel AFN carries, not the other way around.  I speak from experience here.  By your logic, soldiers enjoy watching The Simpsons 30 times a week and like WWE's secondary show "SmackDown!" but not their primary show "RAW".

Thanks for the laugh.  That's pretty typical.  They give them no choice in what they watch and then brag about how "that's all they watch".  It reminds me of Saddam Hussein's elections where he received 100% of the vote.  I can imagine the ballot:

Please select one of the following:

___   Saddam

___   Torture me and kill my whole family

"Obama quit your whinning about it. FOX is NOT being biased against you. They are reporting your lack of experiance. Your own mistakes on speaking and campaigning. Theyu also do this to John McCain, but McCain isn't fouling up like you. That is why you have more stories then he does pal."

I worked across the street from Armed Forces Radio and TV in Italy for two years.

Everyone hated the channels AFN had and most of the shows they chose to show. Ive heard the complaints because most folks thought I worked there instead of at the newspaper.

But its the only game in town.

Most other shows were a cross section of popular shows based on ratings in the US. Except for Fox News. Its a running joke overseas.

At home in the US all the TVs show CNN or MSNBC on the TVs in the PXs or ESPN.

And what better merit to judge a future President against than knowing the channel line-up in Basra!

That's it, Ken? THAT'S the 'Republivan Outrage of the Day?" Pretty weak, gotta say.

In a related item, did you see the reception he got from the non-handpicked crowd? The Pentagon had to pay people to be enthusiastic when Bush and McCain came around. Obama is saving us money and he hasn't even been elected....yet.

I'm watching the pre-speech feed from Berlin on C-SPAN even as I type. What is that, 100,00 people waiting to hear what he has to say? Somehow, hearing that many Europeans shouting "O-Bam-A" and "Yes We Can" is sooooo much more refreshing than "Yankee Go Home!" I wonder if that feeds into Ben Stein's ridiculous comment, "Seventy-five-thousand people at an outdoor sports palace, well, that's something the Fuehrer would have done"

Okay, gotta go - he just hit the stage and I want to hear what our next President has to say....

When Bill O'Reilly forced Fox "news" to sue Al Franken for copyright infringement (subtitle of his book was a Fair and Balanced Look at the Right) as retaliation for being labeled a lying, splotchy bully, the judge, prior to dismissing the lawsuit, wanted to know more about Fox's claim to having 85 million subscribers. He said (I'm paraphrasing here, 'cause i don't have time to dig for a link) let's see, I'm a cable customer, and I get fox news with my cable package...does that make me a "subscriber"? After a pause and crestfallen answer in the affirmative from Fox's lawyers, the courtroom was reported to erupt in laughter, one of several such moments in this very brief trial. Who says conservatives don't know how to be entertaining?

I link to the story and notice the writers name under the symbol of the United States Marine Corp is CarpiJugulum, very catchy. I do make an assumption here that the author whose profile tells us he is an engineer in "Communications or Media" is trying to play on the Marines slogan of Carpe Diem.

I would hope someone who claims to work in the media would realize that Carpe Diem is spelled with an E, and not to be a stickler for details but it's two words Carpe being the first followed by Diem.

Or perhaps our "Communications" professional is a fan of Terry Pratchett who pinned the modern vampire fantasy comic Carpe Jugulum, but again Carpe is spelled with an E. Of course things like spelling have never been important to the good folks at faux news or a good number of their fans.

Either way, great post Ken, Ole CarpI really uncovered some hard hitting and relevant news there. I'm sure that it will convince 10's of people to vote for the Crypt Keeper now that they realize Obama doesn't know what channel the troops watch.

I saw Obama whining like a little pink pussy about FoxNews availability at military installations on a news clip presented by the network synomous with fair and balanced reporting. should be forced to watch Pravda"

I tried to match this statement with anything hubble said or implied. I got nothing. Anyone? Its easy to see where you're coming from ken, since Fox News is what the troops are forced to watch and it is essentially state television.

 from Wikipedia:

Pravda (Russian: Прав ;да, "The Truth") was a leading newspaper of the Soviet Union and an official organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party between 1912 and 1991.

Now switch out a couple words here and there and it the translation is easy:

Fox (Reactionary: News, "The Truth") was a leading cable network of the United States of America and an official organ of the Neocon Establishment of the Republican Party (GOP) between 1997 and 2008.

the eerie parallel--Pravda means the truth. One of the reasons Ken's positions are rigid is his belief that his ideology is the truth. No amount of facts or relevant new information will change his mind, only the spin he puts on it. Its party, right or wrong. Its only good for America if its good for The Party first.

Thank you Comrade.

Misdirection, change the subject, and spin.
Were did I say that the troops shouldn't be allowed to watch Faux News? When did CNN come into the discussion? What good does posting a BoobTube clip do to add to the discussion? Why is this even a subject of a thread for discussion?

Surely in the grand scheme of things there is something a little more important than this!

I Know that a hard hitting "Communications or Media" personality like the spelling challenged CarpI only calls em like he sees them, but of all the topics for conversation that he and you choose to use to take up bandwidth, this is the subject you choose?

But being as you want to make it an issue let's examine.

The troops have the following news channels to choose from Armed Forces Network, CNN International, and Faux News.

Quiz time for you...Which is the only stateside channel?

Now with the latest and the greatest equipment and technology available and with, as of May 2004 over 2700 satellite dishes up and running in Iraq, and as much as we know how Shrub just LOVVVVVVES the troops, you might think they would have just as many stations to choose from as regular satellite subscribers, but know for new they have the three. I wonder why?

But to save you the effort of finding the video on your crackberry while driving here is Faux News coverage via Think Progress, and if you, like the mannequins at Faux News can't tell when someone is making a joke then it's time to adjust the meds....AGAIN.

Really Ken is this the best you have? Sad, very very sad.

When you call McCain "old man", that's both accurate and ageism. If I point out that the continent of Africa has a long history of failure, that is both accurate and racism. Neither argument is fair, but if one is presented, the other should be attached, just for the sake of comparison.

People of Jewish ancestry exhibit natural talent at many activities such as astro-physics and venture capitalism. Conversely, they are terribly under-represented in the NFL, unless we count owners and agents. Similarly, people with African ancestry demonstrate their own unique set of strengths and weaknesses. If you make the blanket statement that old people are unfit for leadership, then perhaps we should be allowed similar latitude with respect to racial groups.

D) Old

All I ever hear is about how electrifying a speaker Obama is.  And here comes Ken, with his made-up "genetically suspect."  He might as well put his own ear wax in a pie tin and call it dinner.

People hear "too old" and they understand it immediately.  It conjurs images of McCain's hands trembling as he shits himself in the Offal Office.  We see McCain waking up at three in the morning with night terrors, babbling about how "Rhode Island must be stopped."  We see a package of Depends with McCain's face on it.

People hear "genetically suspect" and they think, "That sounds made-up.  How dangerous could it be?"  And they are right.

Ken, stop me if you've heard this already from a loved one:

You have nothing to offer this world.

The term "genetically suspect" is designed to be ridiculous and outrageous. The objective is to draw contrast with the equally ridiculous and outrageous position that John McCain is "too old".

Ronald Reagan was president for 8 years, and he was an old guy. He was nearly 79 years old at the end of his second term. But there was not the intensity of criticism over his age.

It is similarly ridiculous to highlight that Barack Obama's father was from Africa, a continent that historically produces poor political leadership.

by KenTX on 07/26/2008 12:52:03 PM EST

[ Parent ]

Just because you don't bother to know about the history of women in science doesn't mean they don't exist.  It just highlights your personal ignorance of the subject, doesn't it?

Here are women scientists recognized for their prominent contributions in the field of physics, as an example.

Sadly, it was very difficult for women to pursue academic pursuits through history for many reasons, not least the problems of being pregnant most of their adult lives, being forced into positions of submission in society, being excluded from access to formal scientific education, etc.  It is not because of their lesser intelligence, as you seem to imply. Through the 17th through 19th centuries, women did not have access to institutions of higher learning.  Think that might have had something to do with it?

I have a hard time believing you will get too far with the "Obama is a horrible speaker" meme.  That is just laughable.

Let's face it.  John McCain is one of the oldest candidates to run for president, and age is associated with loss of memory and other diseases that affect cognitive function.  This is not a controversial statement, but fact.  Barack Obama is half black, but if you believe that makes him less intelligent because of his genetic makeup, the argument doesn't hold.  Even IF race is correlated with intelligence, that doesn't mean that Obama as an individual is not exceptionally intelligent.

Thanks for playing!
