In the Navy and Air Force, if you crash or significantly damage a plane in a non-combat situation, and the incident report hints at a whiff of pilot error, you loose your wings and your career is over.
What we are seeing is Bush all over again. Because McCain was the son an admiral, he appeared to have been given special treatment in the Navy. He got into flight school when his officer trainer standings didn't warrant it. And he crashed 3 planes in non-combat situations, two of which were clearly pilot error, and kept his wings.
Like Bush, McCain was born with a silver spoon in his mouth at least when it came to the Navy. Maybe he got shot down because he really was not qualified to be flying missions over North Vietnam. And if he was not the son of an admiral, his performance at Annapolis and certainly that first crash where he friggin' missed the runway, would have been a one-way ticket to a dead-end duty officer posting working supply at some nowhere Navy depot.
That is the real story behind McCain's military career.
