Nas Raps Fox

How Tides Actually Change

For those of you who missed Nas's 7/23 appearance on The Colbert Report to talk about Fox refusing to accept his petition, here's a link to the video. Scroll down about halfway on the page to see the video box. It also includes his Anti-Fox song at the end. This is how it is done, bit by bit.

If a young black male comes out on the stoop and says, "Yo, where my bitches at?!?" he is probably using the B.E.V. and in translation asking how his (male) buddies are doing. "Where you at?" doesn't mean where are you, where are you located, it means where is your mind, where are your thoughts, are you in a good frame of mind, in other words, Que pasa or what's up. ?Que pasa? literally means what has he/she passed, but since latin languages do not have the sense of "it" it would translate more loosely as what (has happened, while I've been gone) while the time has been passing. More like, what's happening or what's up. Wazzz up boyeee?

Of course, in B.E.V. bitches is often a term of affection between males in a group and has no or very little negative connotation. That does not mean that a young black male, also using B.E.V. cannot also use the word bitch towards a female with a negative connotation, as in Yo BITCH, SHUT...The fuck UP! but depending upon the circumstances, this too can simply mean, um, give me a little space to think please, depending upon how it is taken by the other. But as often as not it will still lead to conflict as in, Oh no, oh hells no, I know you didn't just disrespect me like that in my own house. Up in here. Up in here. I'm bout to get a whoop on down all up in yo grill. Can I get a lil church up in here? Can I? Can I get a witness?

My point? It is all about the context. Really these are points that can't be argued and no one is ever going to change your mind Ken, I'm the last person that would want to. Steven Colbert does the best job of skewing the perspective and putting Fox on its head, I've no need to.

So, white people rule? I should take "you guys" to mean everyone else should be marginalized and get a taste of their own medicine? So you speak for all white Americans? What are the values of white America in your opinion? We're talking here about rap music on this thread, the audience for rap music is 80 percent white and suburban.

I'm not sure exactly what your talking about, but Nas is talking about young black males from the ghetto being forced into serving in a war for the profits of companies like Halliburton to profit Dick Cheney. And they are being killed and dying in service to their country in a far more voilent situation than anything in the ghetto. And news media companies like Fox are selling the lies of Bush and Cheney. That's all we're really talking about here.

A majority of Americans do not trust George W. Bush and a majority of Americans are against the war (for oil) in Iraq. I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Feeling marginalized Ken? Worried about something down your throat? Hmmm.

I try to stay civil on this blog and I know I don't always succeed, but I still have to say I found your post deeply offensive. You don't see the difference between Michelle Obama calling her husband "my baby's daddy" and Fox News calling her Barack's Baby Mama? It's sad but threats like yours have already marginalized you Ken, and liberals didn't put you there. You can take responsiblity for it yourself.
