Crooked Companies, Shoddy Customer Service - Blue Magic Long Gone

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
Last night I watched American Gangster for the first time and I just can’t get over the scene in the beginning where Bumpy Johnson kills over in an empty department store from a heart attack.  Bumpy’s protégé, Frank Lucas played by Denzel Washington, screams out for an ambulance, but when someone finally responds, it is too late.  This scene that was suppose to take place back in 1968 was emblematic to me of how big businesses don’t give a damn about their customers.  I’m here to make note that things have changed, however, sadly enough things have gotten worse.

I don’t want to make this diary a rant about “evil” big businesses.  Yes I’m frustrated as a small business owner that I face innumerable hardships, however, I don’t have it in me to blame someone else.  What I do have a problem with is when I have to interact with these companies who in my mind are ripping off the American public.  Purely from a consumer basis, I find myself being consistently lied to and swindled for my money.  For example, today I received my AT&T bill, and they just happened to add on a couple of hundred bonus bucks.  After giving them a call and spending almost an hour on the phone, I finally spoke to a supervisor and the supposed “error” on the part of AT&T was resolved.  I’m curious how often this happens and how many people make notice of these supposed “errors,” let alone have the time to straighten things out even if it’s for a minimal amount.

I could go on for days about the corporate greed and corruption that has taken over the United States at the expense of the consumer, however, I’ll stop for now.  What angers me more is how these companies have killed customer service.  No matter where you go these days, it’s hard to find people that actually care, let alone take pride in their work.  I’m not asking for a superficial Wal-Mart greeting, but merely some common decency.  It’s time to bring the “Blue Magic” back to our cities, though this time let’s make it legal folks.

I started to read your post but immediately stopped because I wanted to avoid an American Gangster spoiler.

The End

...because I don't remember that part of American Gangster.  But in the interest of full disclosure I had alot of beer that night, and slept through almost all of it.  I only woke up in time to see the feel-good high-fiving final minutes where Malcolm X and that Gladiator guy join forces and leave us with the feeling that all is right with the world and good will always triumph over evil.

This is to say: a) I will not be renting American Gangster to see what I missed, and b) I am also trying to subvert the original intention of rev24's post to it's lowest common denominator which, if successful, will undoubtedly be Ana's cleavage.

I rented the extended uncut version so quite possibly the scene I referenced wasn't in the theatrical release.  Either way, I thought the movie was bad ass so I would definitely recommend a second viewing without the drunken stupor.  Now talk about a spoiler!

oops - at least I only talked about the beginning. So anybody who doesn't want an early scene American Gangster, spoiler skip the intro and go straight for the body.

I always suspected you were a womanizer but finally we have proof.

Have you heard about Verizon lately? Even their own employees are picketing the shoddy customer service they are being forced to give to the landline/DSL customers.  Its all about the FiOS (which isn't even available in my area, but Verizon service has still been so bad several companies I know have switched to cable phone lines.)

Or do you just "have a case of the Mondays."  If so, "turn to channel 9!"

Very interesting Verizon article Jazz, especially in the comments.  In regards to AT&T Jarett, I did dump them, however, I have to keep a call forwarding account with them since my number wasn't eligible to transfer.  Really, not eligible to transfer in the same city - so here's $20 a month for who knows when for a bunch of nothing.  I don't want to sound like a whiner, but it just bugs sometimes.  I also still have my cell service with them and somehow they're holding on to me with the illusion that I want a new iPhone.  Do I really need or even want one of those?  I know, every freak'n ad tells me so and it's great to be connected with ease, but I think I'll be checking the alternatives before I make any sort of commitment.

I really don’t want to sound like some sort of recluse and that I hate all big businesses.  Actually I recently had a great experience with Sony for what it matters.  My lovely laptop went down and was out of warranty and I took it down to the Sony store near Stanford, and I received exceptional service.  Not only was the price somewhat reasonable (though I probably could of bought a far superior new computer for the money), but the technician and everybody else that I’ve been in contact with have been exceptional.  I’m not trying to pitch Sony due to my own personal experience, however, due to these simple positive ways of handling business, in the future I will continue to keep buying Sony electronics.  I just wish other companies would understand this concept.

It shows how bad things are when we notice the few companies that actually do care about their customers.  In Arcata, California, my eye doctor would actually PAY patients by the hour if they had to wait in his office before their appointment.  Is that awesome or what?

Great point about the absurdity that we take notice of "the few companies that actually care about their customers."  I think it's great for people to spread the word when they have good experiences.  Her e in San Francisco there's a website called "yelp" and whenever I have a good experience, I do my best to write a positive review and remember to keep coming back.
