The Bridge to Levenworth

Alaska Republican Sen. Ted Stevens was charged Tuesday with making false statements after a wide-ranging probe into ties between an energy company and lawmakers in his home state, according to a federal indictment. Ooopsie whoppsie...

When the probe began  ,Ted urged constituents "not to form conclusions based upon incomplete and sometimes incorrect reports in the media." Dont worry Ted, your constituents  can now form conclusions based upon indictments.

What did Ted do? From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said Stevens concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation." The company was VECO, an oil services company and big player in the pro-ANWAR lobby.

The indictment released Tuesday said the items included: home improvements to his vacation home in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as car exchanges, a Viking gas grill (!), furniture and tools.

If any thing the Stevens scandal  shows why Republicans are so hot to drill for oil everywhere vice look for long term solutions to the energy mess they created: the prizes are better.

The Tuesday inditment was the first of many inside sources say. On the bright side, Ted and his cronies ," will get some drilling, however "drill" may take on a whole new meaning.

It can get awfully cold and lonely on those oil fields - I think the ratio men to women is 12 to 1 in some spots in Alaska... He's gonna need some of those outdoor "survival skills" for the yard at Leavenworth... Just some food for thought!!! :)

...to petroleum jelly.  Drilling on the "rear slope" of Alaska to begin soon.

Well, he did help "bridge the gap" between oil companies and the US senate.

LOL bfaul.... however, this dude is so old, with all the crevasses and fissures he probably has in his "rear slope" he won't even need soap on a rope.  It would be considered unsuitable for drilling.

We can make jokes like that because we know he's going to walk.  At best he'll do a couple of years in Country Club Penitentiary.  He ought to go down hard, but he won't.  They never do.

Why do we talk as if he will be held accountable, or the people that bribed him? We all know that whatever verdict he gets it will probably have been worth it to commit the crimes. Hooray corruption.

It is hilarious though, that as the house and senate are talking about energy(the ones that show up, check c-span), that one of the republicans is cought, well, being a republican.

Don't talk about religion or politics, my ass!

Duke Cunningham is in jail, isn't he?  Jack Abramoff is in jail.  Sometimes justice actually does get done.  Maybe this is one of those times.

They spend years making shitloads of money, living the high life beyond their means, CORRUPTING THE GOVERNMENT, and most importantly, screwing American people while stealing their money. Whats the punishment? Maybe sending back half the money and spending some time in a jail that MIGHT(depending on the jail) not even have fences. Big fucking deal. These people are slowly destroying the country and all that happens is they get an uncomfortable bed for a few years.

Shit, spend 5 years in minimum security to be set FOR LIFE from bribes? Not too bad. If it didn't involve moral problems I would do it. Like I said, whatever verdict he gets will probably have been worth it anyway.

What they need to do is say that crimes over say $300k or $500k mean you go to a high security prison so they ACTUALLY have the fear of getting stabbed, raped, mistreated, etc. This system is a joke.

Don't talk about religion or politics, my ass!

I'm just saying that sometimes the bad guys do get their comeupance, and I think it's unproductive to just throw your hands up and say "What does it matter?  There is no justice!"  Even if there isn't any now, they win when we accept it as inevitable.

But at least you offered a solution, which is better than just bitching about it alone.
