Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake wrote a very disturbing blog on Monday, July 28th, that needs to get media attention. This blog post is put forth with the hope that the Young Turks will follow-up on this story, and maybe even have Ms. Hamsher on to discuss this tragedy.

Ms. Hamsher's blog is below.

There have been too many tragedies like this coming out of Iraq. It is one more stain on the honor of this nation, and one more family devastated by the horrors of war.

Rape Victim’s Death Ruled “Suicide” By Army — Henry Waxman, Where Are You?

The Jamie Leigh Jones-Halliburton rape case was horrific, but what happened to PFC Lavena Johnson in Iraq in 2005 was many orders of magnitudes worse.

The parents of the young Missouri woman were told that she died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, and her death was ruled a suicide. But her physician father became suspicious after looking at injuries to the body:

After two years of requesting documents, one set of papers provided by the Army included a xerox copy of a CD. Wondering why the xerox copy was in the documents, Dr. Johnson requested the CD itself. With help from his local Congressional representative, the US Army finally complied. When Dr. Johnson viewed the CD, he was shocked to see photographs taken by Army investigators of his daughter’s body as it lay where her body had been found, as well as other photographs of her disrobed body taken during the investigation.

The photographs revealed that Lavena, a small woman, barely 5 feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, had been struck in the face with a blunt instrument, perhaps a weapon stock. Her nose was broken and her teeth knocked backwards. One elbow was distended. The back of her clothes had debris on them indicating she had been dragged from one location to another. The photographs of her disrobed body showed bruises, scratch marks and teeth imprints on the upper part of her body. The right side of her back as well as her right hand had been burned apparently from a flammable liquid poured on her and then lighted. The photographs of her genital area revealed massive bruising and lacerations. A corrosive liquid had been poured into her genital area, probably to destroy DNA evidence of sexual assault.

Despite the bruises, scratches, teeth imprints and burns on her body, Lavena was found completely dressed in the burning tent. There was a blood trail from outside a contractor’s tent to inside the tent. She apparently had been dressed after the attack and her attacker placed her body into the tent and set it on fire.

The Electronic Village has been working hard to draw attention to this tragedy. Color of Change has now joined the battle and is asking people to contact Henry Waxman and ask him to conduct hearings as chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Amy Goodman had an interview with Lavena's parents you can listen to here: http://www.democracynow.org /2008/7/23/suicide_or_murde r_three_years_after Just heartbreaking.

Listening to the father he said that they were originally given doctored photos which was his original tip off. I definitely support a further investigation. They mentioned another case where another woman commited suicide...with 5 shots.

I'm sorry women, but whether its your right or not you would be stupid to go in the military. Actually, just about everyone is stupid to join the military. If they don't have enough troops they can't keep starting wars, or maybe they will actually reduce the amount of bases we have. Its unfortunate that the best way for many poor people to get a better life is to put their life on the line simply so big companies could make some money.

Some stories just make me question humanity. Fucking sickening.

Don't talk about religion or politics, my ass!

I think you are missing the important point here.

This way no one can get sued.

What's not terrible about this situation, the event or the cover-up?

Honestly, I'm not sure where you're coming from Rich? (insert puzzled emoticon here).

I was being sarcastic. Point was of course they tried to wash it away as a suicide.  Otherwise, there would be criminal investigations, trials and lawsuits.

I feel stupid then, because sometimes my sarcasm gets the same reaction online and people take it seriously.

Did you see all of the stupid youtube comments on Cenk's clip saying he might sue John McCain? Now THAT was obviously a joke...or at least it shoulda been obvious.

If a crime of this magnitude acutally occured, shouldn't the evidence be out there on the internet somewhere?

I apologize if it seems insensitive, but the lack of any official documentation, articles, or pictures makes it very difficult to understand the full scope of this situation, and if anyone could post more links to info that would be greatly appreciated.

They are "considering"reop ning the case. This is a murder and it needs to be re-opned and the public need to make it happen. The military can't continue to cover-up what happens to women in the military. She WAS Aan honor studeny, in Iraq for a month.

There were doctored photos

That article was posted almost two months ago. No MSM has develd in tot his case I assumebecause she is not tall and blond, but the case was possible going to be reviewed today along with testimony at the Oversight Hearing on Sexual Assault in the Military.

There will be a viceo up there soon right now there are PDF's of the testimnoy and I haven't seen anything about LaVena Johnson there. Either was this case needs to be reopened in and of itself.
