He's the interim, and soon to be former, (democrat) congressman who lucked out and won Tom Delay's seat after Tommy Boy resigned weeks before the race. He knows he's in big trouble because Democrats are blocking oil drilling, threatening to raise taxes, and demanding surrender in Iraq. Let's hear what Nick has to say.

Dear Friend,

Last week I sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi and the entire Democratic leadership urging them to strongly consider taking a bi-partisan, comprehensive approach to solving our energy problem.  This letter stated that Congress must overcome the rancor and extreme partisanship which has marked the energy debate thus far in order to address the true policy concerns of the American people.

I urged them to allow debate and votes on legislation to increase domestic energy production, including the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Outer Continental Shelf.  This legislation should not be blocked from consideration in favor of harmful efforts to increase taxes and stifle production on existing leases.

I have consistently voted against proposals to raise taxes on domestic energy producers because as we face tightening resources and soaring demand we should encourage production, not punish it.  Our nation should pursue a path that encourages production of current leases while at the same time opens additional on- and off-shore areas for exploration and production.

Furthermore, I have called on Speaker Pelosi to allow genuine debate and a vote on this issue because I believe we should utilize domestic energy resources to the greatest extent possible, and we cannot know exactly what domestic resources are available if we do not allow this to happen.  Additionally, recent polls show that a majority of Americans, as well as a growing number of Representatives, support this policy.

Recent “use it or lose it” proposals to shorten lease agreements and increase fees on federal lands are counter-productive.  Shorter leases and increased fees will not act as an incentive for production; they will drive the independent producers, who own two-thirds of Gulf of Mexico leases, out of business and send exploration and production overseas, leaving us more and more reliant on foreign energy supplied by national oil companies.  Instead, Congress should provide incentives to independent and small energy companies and focus on creating energy and manufacturing jobs and training the next generation of technicians and engineers.

Through my work with the House Center Aisle Caucus I have led efforts to work beyond partisan boundaries so that Congress can provide the leadership and solutions that you expect and deserve.  I believe that we will not be able to accomplish anything, let alone lead our nation to energy independence, if we are unable to have a civil debate and are unwilling to allow all options on the table.

Our nation’s growing energy needs cannot be fully met with either fossil fuels or alternative fuels, and we risk jeopardizing our economy, foreign policy, national security, and our environment if we do not recognize this.  Fossil fuels remain an important part of any viable, overall energy strategy for America and will for the foreseeable future.  I will continue to push for a comprehensive, bi-partisan solution that will enable our nation to become energy independent, sustain our economy, and protect our Earth.

Sincerely,

NICK LAMPSON
Member of Congress

Even the dems are pandering to big oil now.  All it took to convince Americans to conserve and to encourage Detroit to make fuel-efficient cars was one dollar a gallon.  But now everyone whines like babies and climate change be damned--we must have our baby bottle of cheap oil.  I think Americans would kill their own mothers for cheap gas.

June 2008

81% of estimated oil and gas resources on federal lands both onshore and underlying federal waters offshore in the Outer Continental Shelf are available for development or will be accessible pending the completion of land-use planning or environmental reviews. The amount of oil and gas in these reserves is equal to 107 billion barrels of oil and 658 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

The amount of oil which could be produced from these reserves is 10 times the amount that could be produced from opening up ANWR.

The amount of oil which could be produced from these areas represents over 14 years of current U.S. oil consumption (7.5 billion barrels per year).

The amount of gas which could be produced from these areas represents over 30 years of current U.S. gas consumption (21.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year).

The production of these energy resources would provide the country with additional time to develop alternatives to oil and gas and reduce our dependency on energy imports.
68 million acres of federal lands both onshore and underlying federal waters offshore in the Outer Continental Shelf are currently being held by oil and gas companies with no production occurring on these leases.

That 68 million acres of leased but stockpiled federal oil and gas lands could produce an additional 4.8 million barrels of oil and 44.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas each day.

That would nearly double total U.S. oil production and increase natural gas production by 75%.

It would cut U.S. oil imports by one-third.

And it would be more than six times the estimated peak production from ANWR.

And you didn't even include the potential impact of the Enron Loophole, which is estimated to affect nearly 25% of the current cost of oil.  Americans don't bother to educate themselves with facts and the media and politicians feed them with spin that lines their own pockets.  I truly believe certain issues should be decided by scientists and not politicians.  I don't trust the unwashed masses to be able to make the best decisions when all they hear is spin.

You just made my point. Let's start drilling now! Everywhere! Federal taxes and royalties on the trillions of dollars of home grown oil will balance the budget deficit and retire the national debt. The hundreds of thousands of "black energy jobs" will send the economy into overdrive.
