"She's special in every way. She's brilliant, beautiful and sweet. I'm very, very lucky,'' said Crist, who picked out the sapphire and diamond ring a day earlier at the Gold and Diamond Center in St. Petersburg's Northeast Shopping Center.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Charlie Crist is engaged to a woman he met last September during a trip to New York.

The 51-year-old governor popped the question to Carole Rome on Thursday morning at his St. Petersburg apartment. Crist says she said yes without hesitation.

Crist says the couple may plan a fall wedding, most likely a small ceremony in St. Petersburg followed by a larger reception at the governor's mansion. While Rome has two daughters from a previous marriage, 9 and 11, Crist said he hopes he and Rome can have a child of their own.

Crist's first marriage ended nearly 30 years ago.

  • His future wife plans on maintaining her residence in Miami and visiting Tallahassee during school holidays...that sort of thing.
  • She is wealthy from her first marriage and by birth.
  • Asked what made him fall in love, Crist said, “Her beautiful smile, her sweetness, her brilliance — all of it.” Gay? Asked again "She's brilliant, beautiful and sweet. I'm very, very lucky." Yep...gay! and a new talking point!
  • She has two children...so the pressure is off for Charlie to "produce"
  • The wedding and reception will all be in St Pete...
  • His spokeswoman, Erin Isaac, offered few other details. "We're excited for him," she said. Obviously, someone will need to get "excited" for him.

This story just won't seem to go away. America is ready for the first black president, but I'm not so sure about the first gay black president.

McCain's objective is to keep it close until October, and then let the 527s do the rest.
