I converted one!

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
So last night I personally converted a former Hillary supporter from a deluded McCain voter to an enlightened Obama voter.

We were both Hillary supporters earlier this year, and I knew he wasn't crazy about Obama, but when he told me he was going to vote for McCain I first collected myself from the floor then asked him why. I listened patiently as he repeated the talking points fed to him by the MSM, and then I went to work.

I watched the light come into his eyes as I patiently explained to my politically illeterate ex-boyfriend that Obama may be inexperienced and he may not be able to do the things he wants to do, but at least he WANTS TO DO GOOD THINGS and is not a liar, or a greedy opportunist, or a no good wife leaver (for relavance see above), unlike some creepy old senators from Arizona that will go unnamed. I also threw in some bits about the tax plans of each candidate, which of course surprised him.

Anyway, after about, oh, five minutes of plain old information, he was converted.

(Come on Kozlo, bring it.)

Really awesome.

PS---When I first read your thread title I was nervous you were referring to Scientology for some reason.

We need peaceful, articulate conversation and not the BS-laden arguments of the intellectually corrupt sheep.

Good job.  Let's see how he votes...

If you ever encounter someone foolish enough to be undecided or voting McCain, make sure you bludgeon them with The 3 Facts.

Thanks for the uplifting post.

for your old man to be "converted", then I cant really say much to how bright he or you are in the first place...

I mean, really - If he had any sense at all, he wouldnt have been a Clinton supporter in the first place...

Jesus you guys are funny!

:)

by bobo1 on 08/15/2008 02:48:20 PM EST

You always go on and on about how stupid and easily swayed the average voter is, but now you say this?

Nope, pick one and stick to it. It's not "you guys", it's EVERYONE (or most people) according to you.

Thats the great thing about being an American, bias...

I was merely suggesting that if this man was so easily swayed by nonsense lies and propoganda, then how astute can we consider the Obama voting block to be?

Its all quite simple really if you actually think about it...

As for this being inspirational, you guys have sure "moved the goalposts" if this is what inspires your confidence in America!!!

:)

Wow you're boring.

Yeah, hearing a story of someone being converted to my side IS a little inspirational to me.  I know it's not as big as your "revolution", but...

And what exactly were the lies?

by Spencer on 08/15/2008 03:10:09 PM EST

And if you want to measure Obama voters against McCain voters in terms of how informed they are...  Well, I think we all know how that'd go.

It's not 'your way, right away'.

You're being dishonest and I'm calling you out on it.

bobo is a massive "flip-flopper" (see here and here).

Don't get me wrong, you might get a response (on some new topic of bobo's choosing), but you won't get an answer to your specific point.

my "old man" as you so adorably put it is anything but easily swayed. He's as stubborn as a mule and usually shuts off when I start disputing his crazy opinions with my over-intellectualized analyses.

In this case, however, all I had to do was point out a few simple facts that the MSM doesn't. His response was a resounding "REALLY? 894th? FIVE JETS? AND SHE WAS CRIPPLED FROM A CAR ACCIDENT? WTF?"

I also had a nice time debunking the elitist bit about Barack Obama by informing my "old man" (old but hot) that Obama was still paying back his student loans until he pubished "Dreams From My Father." He loved that one inparticular, since he has major hang ups about people who get handed everything in life verses those who earn it.

And the tax stuff really got him on board, despite the fact that he is one of the few people who would be getting a break (hot and loaded, how do you like that?) because he happens to like the idea of having a middle class. (Not only is he hot and loaded, he also cares about other people.... shit, maybe I should get back together with him ;>)

Anyway, like I said, just a little cold hard indisputable information was all it took. That's the encouraging part.

The entire McCain campaign is nothing but nonsense and propoganda.  Obama's an "elitist"?  Yet, McCain wears $520 shoes and has 6 homes?  I really don't care what McCain has, honestly, but since he's making ridiculous statements, I might as well call him out on it.

As far as the "inspirationaL" part...yes, i find it inspirational and heartening that there are still people out there that could change their mind based on facts uncovered during a reasonable discussion.  THAT, my friend, if the beauty of America!  Not bias, but adaptability and the opportunity to adhere to the rules of logic and reason.  Unfortunately, the cons (via Fox) have turned us into lazy marblemouth idiots that latch on to the first factoid they hear. But, their time is up.  They've pulled the wool over America's eyes too long and now they need to pay the price.

We may never convert people like you and Goslow (I like that one, by the way) because you don't have the tools - the functioning brainpower - to adapt or to change.

When I mentioned "bias", I did not mean ihavenobias, as bobo referenced.  I meant the standard definition - opinions based on generalizations and not necessarily based on any fact.  Could have been confusing there...

Either this is tiny, parodying conservatives, or we have attracted a conservative "bizarro" tiny. Both possibilities are equally bad. You are exactly right, its spam.

Although the TYT forum encourages personal attacks and stalking, perhaps we could ban SPAM TROLLS.

People have a right to express an alternative viewpoint, but not to SPAM. People who say it's a free speech issue seem unable to make the critical distinction.

you are just starting to understand.

Spammers and trolls wear the ban stick like a badge of honor. Ignore them and they just go away.

other times telling me to ignore them (again) is like finding a giant piece of shit in my food and having my waiter tell me to just "eat around it".

by ihavenobias on 08/17/2008 03:18:41 AM EST

[ Parent ]

but if you try to silence what others say because you personally disagree with it, regardless of how ridiculous the messenger is then you are no better then they are.

The one intelligent thing I have ever heard Limbaugh say is "you have the right to speak but not to be heard".

Ignore them and they will go away.

Do you honestly think their motive is to have a good discussion or debate OR is their goal to disrupt, annoy and inflame?

There's a huge difference you should acknowledge, because it's the core of our point on this issue. Silencing those to who we disagree with just because they disagree with us is wrong, I 100% agree. Silencing those to we know just want to disrupt, annoy, inflame and spam is right, period.

If you let them know that they are getting under your skin they will nick hop and be back over and over. If you ignore them then they go away.

It is easy to get around IP blocking if you know how (unless your provider uses static addressing and there are still cheap ways around that).

If you want to control every thing on a forum then start your own. This one gives everyone a lot of slack and some of us like it that way.

but then you just couldn't resist going over the top and saying this:

"If you want to control every thing on a forum then start your own. This one gives everyone a lot of slack and some of us like it that way."

I have 2 obvious things to say about that:

1)-Total and complete straw-man. I want to "control everything" because I created a thread to get opinions on how to improve the forum? A thread that had well over 160 responses no less. It's laughable man, laughable.

2)-Yeah, I get it, there are "some" old timers who never want anything to change because they're comfortable. But guess what? Times are a changin', new people are signing up every day, and there are more people who DO want some things to change.  That doesn't mean drastic, sweeping change (although you keep implying that it does) it just means some tweaks here and there to make things better in the minds of most.

You know, it's that whole conservative (stay the same or go back) vs progressive (move forward and improve) thing.

;)

at this.

Who does that sound like?

Look Bias, this is simple, there are people out there who want to conrol thought , regardless of how rediculas it is.

You can't pick and choose. Notice Ken wants to pick and choose which parts of the bill of rights are important when it comes to the constitution. You want to be just like him then go ahead.

Or you can just ignore these people and they will go away.
