So What is it with Your Countrymen?

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
Well, the dust has settled and once again we are talking about how much people like John McCain. What is the story?

Here in Canada, we are generally unswayed by the character of the leaders and you seldom see any real cult of personality. The only real exception was Pierre Turdeau's 1968 campaign. In you country, it is always about who would you like to have a beer with? What the heck is that about?

You know, I really do not get this at all. What could the reason be? Is it the media? Is it fear because of war?  Or is it simply that most of your countrymen can't see beyond their personal horizon?

My opinon on all of this mess is that I am feeling very dissapointed with your countrymen, and I am not sure they will make the right choice come November and vote for Obama, as imperfect a candiate as he is. I won't say that Canadians are generally any brighter or any more knowledgeable. I will say however that we aren't easily swayed by conservative rhertoric or bombast; the anti Canadian Medical system rhertoric by way of example is not going very far here; Canadians by a vast majority won't let it happen. However, it is a certainty that should you elect McCain and he is able to reinforce the existing anti choice, reactionary Supreme Court, it will be a possible problem for us here in Canada.

I am listening to David Bender right now, and he is saying visceral outways fact; is that true? Are you as a nation really like that? Are you really that easily swayed?

So what to do; the answer simply is to pressure Obama into telling McCain's real story for him. It is blatantly obvious that most of your countrymen don't know how extreme he is; this has been said over and over. However, now is the time to get tough and to stand up to the bully. Give people the truth and keep shouting it from the highest mountain top over and over. Otherwise, your nation stands to undergo change via the Supreme Court at the hands of an irrelavant old blow-hard that will take generations to over come both at home and possible abroad.

Get on Obama's case; REALLY GET ON OBAMAS CASE; GET ORGANIZED AND STOP WHINING ABOUT HOW BADLY OBAMA IS DOING THIS. Get the job done or the job will be done on you!

Generaly I agree with you but Im still wanting to tell you to fuck off. While you are worried about our politics Canada is becoming more and more conservatve. Just like the little sibling nation that you are.

Listening to mullet sportin maple gorged tundra monkeys give us advice on our politics is a bit like Tiger Woods no name cousin telling him when to use his 6 iron.

Its like your neighbor gving you marriage advice because e heard you quarelling with youre lover. Its like the way that I can talk shit about my siter who drives me up a wall My brother CAN talk shit about my sister but YOU cant talk shit about her.

Listen to the canadian go!! Thinkin he got more right to comment on our politics than mexico just because they are all white up there. Just because you all are all cozied up to upstate new york minnesota and shit doesnt mean we wont bring democracy to your sorry asses too. We hear you have good oil up there these days so watch your step

I doesnt matter if you are right, in fact, I know you are right but we will take care of our own mess thank you very much EHHH?

P.S. You are totally right I hate my countrymen

So, that is the best reply you can manage, EH?

Well, maybe you are making my case then; should I infer that you represent all progressives, or is it more accurate to infer that you are a simply a clueless dolt.

I said Canadians are not a bunch of rocket scientists but I can tell you that we will keep our medical system, and the Canada Pension Plan, and that generally speaking, despite your assertions to the contrary, this country is not moving to the right. Do you really honeslty think that Canadians want what you have for a health care system. And by the way, two recent polls, 65% of Canadians are in favor of choice, and over 60% of Canadians do not want to be involved in Afghanistan.

So, try it again little fella; Gooday EH?

you nailed it

"doesnt mean we wont bring democracy to your sorry asses too"

Bush's true legacy right there: when Bushco uses the word "democracy", people around the world see it as a threat of violence, chaos and invasion

also:
"we will take care of our own mess"

when rethugs use that, I always want to scream at them: that would be fine if the mess stayed within US borders, but it rarely does, it has a tendency to spill it's crap all over the globe and innocent people usually die because of it.

Dude I was kidding. Though it is a bit annoying to hear foreigners butt in its really not that big of a deal. I took it so far over the top I figured you would know I wasnt serious. Have your scientists not invented sarcastic humor yet?

Next time I will T-Y-P-E  M-O-R-E  S-L-O-W-L-Y  so as not to confuse you

Ok:

I get it; oh sorry, I am confused, I am typing too fast.

Fine, call it even. Didn't sound sarcastic to me; I don't know you. My bad as Cenk would say; but I have news for you, our two countries share the longest undefended border in the world. I know you know that; so guess what, it matters big time what happens in your country. I am 52, served in the Navy, and I'm a little tired now. I really don't relish the thought of spending energy I don't have much of marching some future date in support of a women's right to chose in my country. But, given what might happen in your country, I may have too. Get the wrong types on your supreme court, and it may have consequences all over. So, I take very seriously what is going on to the south. And if you think I am not going to comment when it is my business, you're kidding yourself.

I said Canadians have plenty that is wrong with them, but that doesn't change my feeling that I need to speak out. I hear a lot of complaining about Obama, but not much commentary on how to get him pointed in the right direction. A lot of you folks are missing the point of what it means for people all over the world. I don't know, maybe you do, maybe you don't. I don't know; as I said I don't know you from a hill of beans.

Again, my bad, but you folks need to be told.

To be fair I could see how you wouldnt see that I was kidding. Sorry about that I dont want to be the guy who goes around starting drama on the internet and certainly not here on this Forum.

I actualy work for a Canadian and will be driving through the Yukon and British Columbia next week. So now may not be the best time for me to be starting any wars with you guys as I will be deep behind enemy lines for nearly a week.

I totaly understand how what happens here affects you guys and can see how you have cause for concern.

I am afraid that proressive Americans will not be able to push Obama in the right direction as it will require more work than we are acustomed to. As Hartman says this time voting isnt enough we have to become active. We have to do what the christian right did when reagan opened the door to them in the early eighties and though we progressives are passionate we lack the dogmatic vigor and willingness to blindly follow as told that the mortal majority has and I dont expect Obama to open the same door for us reagan did for the nuts with crosses

For my part I have begun attending and participating in our local Democratic central commitee meetings. I think that is the place I might do the most damage to the blue dog fuckers in my community. Now if everyone else would do it that would be great but I am finding the hope of that prospect to be uninspiring to say the least

Oh yeah acasper I was in the Navy too.

I think it points to the arrogance that a lot of small thinking Americans have.  Thinking no one esle can have a relevant opinion about anything 'American'.  It is a kind of racist thing -- like an "ugly American" image -- speaking louder or slower to someone in a foreign country, like they are 'slow' or retarded because they can't understand you, as if you are somehow superior.  I've seen this in too many American tourists in foreign countries.

The 'big news' that they haven't 'groked' yet is that America is swiftly becoming a 3rd world country.  If you look at our vaunted health care system, it compares in many ways with that of a 3rd world country.  Infant mortality and a number of other statistics are below most 1st world nations.  Our educational system is not functioning at a world class level.  We ship raw materials to other countries to manufacture goods because we don't create anything any more.

I'd say there are a LOT of people who need to wake up and take a cold, hard look in the mirror in the full light of day and re-evaluate what they are seeing.   They need to tone down the attitude and the rhetoric, and get a little humility.  Our constitution isn't about 'citizens' of the US, it talks about all people, everyone.  Everyone is entitled to the rights and freedoms in the constitution and everyone understands what they are.  They can see that WE, who were born here and given this great gift, are simply pissing it away like some empty headed, clueless heir to a fortune who doesn't appreciate what he has been given.

You are right on many counts.  Americans can be selfish and lazy.  We've been a democracy for so long, there are those of us who feel that they no longer have to be a part of it anymore.  They'll complain about it, but, at the same time, they will say "MY vote doesn't make a difference".  That statement always shows how selfish they are.

Remember that Gore won the popular vote in 2000.  People were stupid in 2004.  They were victims of the "smear, fear and queer" campaign of the conservatives.  2008 will be different.  Personally, I don't want to have a beer with my President because that means they're not doing their job.  I want him or her to be smarter than I am.  I want him or her to speak more gooder than me and follow the law.

Obama 2008.

I was listening to a liberal call in show this morning and this guy was giving his opinion about something and he said "I'm just a blue-collared guy."  But he was far more articulate than any blue-collared worker I've met.  Then it happened--he said "Aboot" and it all made sense.  You high and mighty Canadians think you're so smart that you can give opinions about our political process with your well-reasoned opinions and liberal politics.  Don't you understand?  Americans vote with their d!cks, not their brains!

Many of us consider your country sort of one large spider hole where we can run and hide if another Republican gets elected.  ;)

by desertpear on 08/18/2008 12:33:56 PM EST

Just following up on this thread. I am a little suprised it got so much feedback. Glad for it.

Don't worry; Canada will always stay progressive. I don't know if things will change, but you are always welcome here. I don't know many Canadians other then a minority whom would feel otherwise. This is a pretty large spider hole; especially as you go north! Lol.

Come over anytime!

Cheers!
