Rachel Maddow GOT HER OWN SHOW!!!! Another reason to like Daily Kos - Keith Olbermann posts there regularly, so you can "talk at him."

I'm taking full credit for this.  I sent what feels like a thousand e-mails to them.  If this means anything, I also sent them tons of e-mails about TYT.  I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying...

They seemed to mesh pretty well on Meet the Bloggers.

Hopefully Rachel can dress normally on her new show and not in the Clinton-esque style they shove her into on Countdown/Road to the Whitehouse.

Maddow is replacing Abrams, and I actually really like Abrams. He's pretty damn fair IMO.

This is a big win and a medium loss IMO. If Maddow had replaced David Gregory's show, it woulda been a huge win-win.

I only owned one Pearl Jam album before I started listening to TYT, but because they played them I went back and bought some of their other albums.  They're okay.  I usually find two or three great songs on each.

Since you brought up music, everyone should go buy the new EP from One Day as a Lion.  It's the new side project of Zack de la Rocha (the singer from Rage Against the Machine) and the drummer from The Mars Volta.  I loved it.

I just found out about Zogby recruiting for poll takers. If you already heard about it, sorry to be repetitive.

Zogby Interactive's Online Polling

From the site:

How it works:

1. Complete the online registration page and submit it to us.

2. Zogby Interactive will e-mail you and inform you when an online poll is ready for you to take.

3. Complete the survey. (Easy? We thought so.)

4. Zogby International will e-mail you and inform you when results are available to view.

5. See how your opinion stacks up.

6. Be ready to voice your opinion with the leading public opinion pollster in the world. If you would like the results of the poll you took (as well as other poll results and Zogby International information), be sure to check the check-box asking if you would like Zogby International press releases and other Zogby information sent to you in the future.

Just in case some of you aren't aware that you can see Keith Olbermann's Countdown show online.  Yesterday's show was great as usual, but the best part was a Special Comment smackdown on McCain.  Share it with your friends ;)

"When you had the tastelessness to paraphrase the rallying cry of 9/11 and say that we are now all Georgians, that nation’s President called you out. He said that your words were very nice, but he needed action not a verbal receipt from a lobbyist and his pet Senator!"

Someone is claiming to have 'contracted' (wrong word, Pear help me out here) a tapeworm (a nine footer no less) in Chicago.

He says it was from undercooked fish.

I have to ask, why doesn't this happen more often with Sushi? Is it just the type of fish? But I mean, people eat raw Salmon, don't they?

by ihavenobias on 08/19/2008 09:20:40 PM EST

Most fish used for sushi don't have a high parasite load, or at least not parasites that can live out their lives in the human body.

Salmon are an exception, but I wasn't familiar with this tapeworm, so I did a little searching.

OMG is this the coolest tapeworm in the world or WHAT??

"Diphyllobothrium is the longest tapeworm of man and occasionally reaches a length of 10 meters. The tapeworm usually resides in the ileum and jejunum and may have a life span as long as 20 years. The life of Diphyllobothrium is complex and includes two intermediate hosts and a definitive host of man. Twenty-two mammals have been shown to be definitive hosts for the adult worm including dog, cat, walrus, bear, seal, fox, and whale."

It seems a particular fish tapeworm originating from fish farms in Chile are probably to blame.  Here is an excellent article.  Ah, but it is found in Alaskan salmon too.  The drawbacks and impacts of salmon farming are many.  So, don't buy it please.  These farms are already hurting our healthiest native salmon runs in Canada and Alaska.  You might want to avoid raw salmon in sushi bars.  Chew well Grasshopper.  I always do with raw salmon.

The worms I am familiar with in Pacific salmon are the Anisakis worms.  They also have a fascinating life history in which they pass through a number of hosts to complete their life cycle.  Eggs hatch in the sea and larvae are eaten by crustaceans (like krill).  Then, when the crustacean is eaten by a fish or squid, the nematode burrows into the wall of the gut or muscle, encysted in a protective coat.  The life cycle is only complete when the fish is eaten by a marine mammal (seal, whale or dolphin--definitive hosts), when the nematode then encysts in the intestine, feeds, grows, mates, and releases eggs through the host's feces into the sea again.  Our guts are similar enough to the marine mammals that the worm can lodge in there and wreak havoc, but I'm not sure if they reproduce.  They eventually die in the human--so sad.  Here is endoscopy video footage of one inside a guy's intestine.  How can you not love the internet??

It is harder to get the tapeworms than you think though.  So, it's just one of those risks you take.  It happens more commonly in Japan.

A Diphyllobothrium?  Come on!  Out with it already.

Bonus random open thread biology fact:  The gene that causes genitals to form in flies is called the "Ken gene".  They say it's named after Barbie's gay boyfriend, but I think it's named after our local TYT Ken, because his arguments are so weak that he gives even the most meek posters a healthy set of balls.

how obscure is that?

No, this is not the giant tapeworm, but that would be cool.

Are you ready for the craziest turtle story of all time?

The Hoan Kiem turtle lives in a shallow lake in Hanoi, Vietnam. The western world thought the Vietnamese were referring to a mythical creature when they talked about it.  There is more...

by desertpear on 08/20/2008 02:59:19 AM EST

This wasn't the very best translation, so I fixed some things, here goes:

It is believed that Kim Qui is the King of the turtles currently living in Luc Thuy (Hoan Kiem) Lake. [okay, pretty fanciful, I agree]

The second legend explains the name of Hoan Kiem (Lake of Restored Sword) of King Le Thai To.

In 1418, a farmer named Le Loi (future King Le Thai To) gathered an insurrection army in Thanh Hoa Province. He proclaimed himself Binh Dinh Vuong (King of Pacification), led the resistance against the aggressors for 10 years, and regained national independence.

The name of the lake is derived from a legend that a fisherman named Le Than caught a sword blade in his fishnet. He decided to give it to his commanding general Le Loi.

He kept this sword at his side during 10 years of resistance against Ming aggressors. After winning over the foreign aggression, King Le Thai To returned to Thang Long Citadel. One day, aboard a royal boat, he took a cruise on Luc Thuy Lake when a giant turtle emerged and came towards him.  The king withdrew his sword and pointed it at the  turtle to draw his soldiers' attention. Suddenly, the turtle grabbed the sword in its teeth and submerged. [I would say this is not implausible] The king thought that during the resistance against Ming aggressors, the genius [maybe this is supposed to be "genie??" it's obviously translated wrong] had offered him this sword to help him defeat the enemy. At that time, peace was returning, and the genius [genie] appeared to take back the sword.

Consequently, King Le Thai To decided to name the lake ‘Hoan Kiem’ (Lake of Restored Sword). In the middle of the lake is Thap Rua (Turtle Tower).  (damn you photobucket maintenance)

Prof Duc believes the turtle that made off with Le Loi's sword is still living in the lake. That would make it about 550 years old.

He explained that the turtles live in the Hoan Kiem Lake only, but according to his research, only one turtle is in the lake now. The turtle is recognised by its head with a white spot and a left-incline when swimming.

Mr Duc said the turtle may be related to the trionychidae species, the Rafetus swinhoei, a species found in China. [I think this was confirmed]

Another supposition might be the King Le Thai To brought the turtles from Thanh Hoa Province to release them in Hoan Kiem Lake, according to Mr Duc.  Large turtles have been caught in Lam Kinh District in Thanh Hoa, some weighing in at 150 kilograms.

‘It would be wonderful if the turtles in Lam King were related to Rafetus Leloii turtles. The problem is we do not know how to test Rafetus Leloii’s sex. Moreover, he now is too old’. Mr Duc said.

Impossible to explain, Hoan Kiem’s turtle usually surfaces around the lake during events related to the history of King Le Loi.

by desertpear on 08/20/2008 03:17:34 AM EST

[ Parent ]

I didn't review that first.  Kinda long.

I think the final verdict is that there is one surviving member of the Chinese species Rafetus swinhoei in this Hanoi lake.

The specimen located in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi is thought to be the legendary Kim Qui, or Golden Turtle God, who has appeared at opportune moments throughout Vietnamese history. The golden turtle first appeared during the reign of King An Duong Vuong (257-207 BC) and assisted the king in the construction of defenses for the ancient capital of Co Loa...

In 1999, 2000, and 2005 turtles have reemerged from Hoan Kiem Lake on special occasions, when it was seen by a large audience and caught on film. It is believed that there is only a single turtle left in the lake.

One last turtle who may have been there 500 years.  Sort of like Nessie.

by Spencer on 08/20/2008 03:28:48 AM EST

Oh, I think there were more and this is just the very last of the last. It's probably not the same one that grabbed the sword. [we can wish]

They will "save" it and take it to Chicago.  I hear Shedd is already busy constructing the fake lake and temple.

I don't think turtles worry about existential sorts of things, but it is probably curious when it comes up and people treat it as a holy figure.  It must just hide down in the mud for months, poking its nostrils out for air once in a while.

so it's pretty safe to eat for the most part.  it's sashimi that you have to worry about.

"FDA requires all fish with a potential hazard of parasites that is intended for raw consumption to be previously frozen. Freezing fish to -20ºC [-4ºF] or below for 7 days or -35ºC [-31ºF] or below for 15 hours will kill the parasites. Since the restaurants don't want to take any risk and want to avoid supply and demand price fluctuations, most go even further and freeze all fish (not only the ones that could be infected) before serving them raw. So, all that "fresh" sushi you've been eating is previously frozen."

That's probably true for most salmon in sushi bars, which is usually served marinated or smoked anyway.  But I guess every once in a while...  one slip and a 30 foot parasite is living your life for you!!  ;)

Sashimi is a component of most sushi.  Do you mean, they flash freeze the sashimi used to make sushi?  Wouldn't they do that with any and all fish intended for raw consumption in the US?  It's a long way from the ocean to Chicago, after all.

You can further reduce the (already negligible) chance of getting sick by drinking green tea with your sushi, which contains catechin.  That kills a lot of the bacteria responsible for food poisoning.

by OneHitKill on 08/20/2008 03:40:43 AM EST

I wondered if it is just one of those self-enforced kind of rules that get broken all the time.  I believe all the large tuna are flash frozen at sea when caught, right?  I mean for the most part.  But salmon can often be bought fresh, having never been frozen. Maybe even flown to Chicago.  After all, look at the lobster trade.

I did not know about the green tea.  hopefully it goes well with cold sake. mmmmm.  lucidity

Living here has changed me.  It used to be, I saw a big sea bream in the grocery store, head attached, eyes looking at me, and all I saw was a smelly fish.  But when a Japanese sees that same sea bream, their vocal reaction is "That looks good."  I'm not sure when it happened for the first time, maybe last year sometime, but at some point I reached the point where I can look at that whole fish and catch myself thinking, "That looks good."

reminds me of the time i went camping with an old girlfriend at some remote lake.  I caught a fish for the night, attempted to make a fire with the wet leaves, and cut the fish up with a butter knife.  It was a horrible experience and I should of just resorted to the can of pork and beans we brought as back up.  I was determined to show my survival instinct, though the damn fish wouldn't cook in the foil on the fire, not to mention we had no light since the fire was barely burning.  Eventually I had to eat the damn fish and the raw fish tasted like lake - nasty fish!
