John McCain was NOT Tortured in Vietnam, says Bush

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

I gotta hand it to Andrew Sullivan for writing this post.

Snips:  "In all the discussion of John McCain's recently recovered memory of a religious epiphany in Vietnam, one thing has been missing. The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?

According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured."

"Now the kicker: in the Military Commissions Act, McCain acquiesced to the use of these techniques against terror suspects by the CIA. And so the tortured became the enabler of torture. Someone somewhere cried out in pain for the same reasons McCain once did. And McCain let it continue."

He continues on, and I do not have anything substantive to add except that this is another great thing to HAMMER THE REPUBLICANS WITH FROM NOW UNTIL THE ELECTION!

is a hell of a good point.  I can envision a whopper of a political commercial based on this theme.  They could skin him with it.

I need to read his blog more often.  This is a great thing to call in to right wing radio shows about.

Some people's minds lock down when they talk about McCain because he was tortured by the enemy.  Imagine how the GITMO POW's will be treated in the militant Islamic world?

Here is a different point which makes the non-religious squeamish, but which after the Saddleback sermon by Rev. McCain, should be pressed home as much as the BushCo hypocrisy--
Jesus Christ was tortured, tortured to death.  No "Christian" should tolerate any form of torture, so if McCain is a Christian, should he not condemn any form of torture?  Why aren't Christians out in the streets against this blasphemy?  It's not something a follower of Jesus Christ can quibble about or equivocate.
