Major McCain Supporter Factories Closed in Immigration Raid

Yesterday agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement closed a factory belonging to Howard Industries Inc., which manufactures electrical transformers, and other products. A second Howard facility, in nearby Ellisville, was also closed by ICE  also.

Its should come as no surprise...CEO and owner William Howard Jr is (or was after the raid )  a major Republican contributor and Bush and McCain supporter.

< ICE Agents lead supected illegal workers Bob Smith, Jim Smith, Dave Smith and George Smith to ICE processing station in Montgomery.

In a statement issued after the raid, Howard Industries, the largest employers in the region, acknowledged that it was “visited” by immigration agents .“It is company policy that it hires only U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.”

Yep..as we suspected..."guest workers" are here to bust unions where they exist and lower wages for all workers...a favorite trick of Republicans.

In addition,  The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) leveed $193,000 in penalties against Howard Industries for 54 violations of federal safety rules at the company’s two manufacturing locations. The violations were described this way:

“It is unconscionable for an employer to tolerate serious injuries, including amputations, as just a cost of doing business, rather than get out into the production areas and fix these numerous problems before employees get injured,” said Clyde Payne, director of OSHA’s Jackson Area Office.

Now for the second dirty little secret; Republicans who scream about  the laws in place to guarantee emergency medical treatment, the laws often cited by conservatives as being abused by illegals, secretly support the measure because they get free health care for the illegal workers...either at "faith based clinics" or emergency rooms avoiding costly workman's compensation and ugly questions about fake social security numbers.

Why do you think the law , Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act , passed by Reagan is still on the books after 6 years of a Republican majority under Bush or the  Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 that contains a provision for $250 million per year for fiscal years 2005-2008 in payments to providers for emergency health services provided to undocumented aliens was signed by Bush? Proof is in the pudding:

Alejandro Rodriguez, the illegal alien from Mexico, also enjoys an extremely high level of health care, relative to his home country. Unlike KenTX, Alejandro pays nothing for his health care. We have a two tier health care system, and everybody is happy

Not everybody, the 47 million uninsured Americans who can't get health insurance would be happy to know that Republicans can subsidize illegal workers to maximize big contributor profits by driving down wages ( adding more and more to the uninsured ranks) but can't seem to do any thing for Joe Sixpack.

Republicans can't be trusted to solve the immigration problem, health care problem or anything else unless it involves raping the Treasury.  They, and their contributors, make to much money off the status quo.

I've argued for some time that Republicans who blame Dems for undocumented workers are misguided. They really need to look hard in their own backyard at the pro-Big Business Repubs that absolutely love undocumented workers.

I mean, these people despise the minimum wage for AMERICAN workers, so just imagine the joy they get from paying undocumented workers as little as possible with no benefits and unsafe working conditions.

And the workers don't dare complain for fear of deportation.

This is not an illegal immigrant problem. It's an illegal employer problem. Cracking down on illegal employers is easily 80% of the problem. For evidence look at how many undocumented workers were here in 1980 (you know, When Reagan came in) compared to today.

Instead of wasting money on a fence, I wouldn't mind using that money to help with employer crackdown and or assisting Mexico with building a better economy so they can retain their workers.

And of course if we have a shortage of workers (a real one, not a manufactured one created by businesses trying to pay shit wages with no benefits thus not attracting any American workers) we can always let more people in legally. They'll be paid properly, work safely and they won't be stealing any identities.

It's a win-win-win.

BushCo obviously green lighted this raid, why now?

the immigration reform bills were defeated, Bush was rejected by the conservatives getting pressure from back home. So in typical Bush fashion "Oh yeah...we''ll show you"

The administration is adamant about creating a Guest Worker Amnesty program and clearly the President and his administration realize that if they are to sell the Guest Worker amnesty program, they need to demonstrate that the government is able to effectively enforce the immigration laws to blunt the criticism of those of us who oppose Guest Worker Amnesty programs.

Keep in mind, even now...84% of worksite arrests are of illegal aliens, not employers. So Bush is stepping up enforcement in an attempt to pressure the Rethugs that voted against it to feel the pain from the big contributors that are getting hit. Why? Obviously the thinking is that the stepped up enforcement will carry over to a McCain administration if there is one..and the immigration give away can start anew, regardless of what the Straight TalK express claims now.

Okay, I'll buy that-- like trashing the EPA or setting the oil wells on fire on the way out.
I thought I heard there was another ICE raid in the south today.
