He must, because he just gave away his best argument against Obama. McCain chose instead to target Clinton supporters and shore up his conservative base with an ultra-conservative, almost eccentric ,nominee that could easliy pass for one of the off beat characters normally found the late TV series about Alaskan life, Northern Exposure.
Experience, the ability to assume the office of President ,is a crucial for McCain, who made the announcement on his 72nd birthday.
It is an serious issue, regardless of what the McCain campaign does to deflect it. Certainly there will be countless questions about Palin's ability to fill that role. McCain, after all ,has had four bouts with malignant melanoma, the worst of the skin cancers.
That fact deepens the questions surrounding of McCain's decision process of late. With the economy taking the forefront, his choice of Palin who is described as "militantly " anti-choice and evangelical, is hardly the type of running mate that will endear herself to Hillary supporters. At least Romney had some economic credentials.
No experience and limited appeal to disaffected Hillary supporters make the choice even more puzzling. One can only surmise that McCain is in worse trouble with the Christian right than he lets on. Those are votes that he absolutely needs to come even close, obviously, and McCain chose the base.
To top it off,Palin apperently has no idea what the job of vice president entails. This will not help McCain's experience argument:
“What is it exactly that the vice president does every day?” Gov Sarah Palin on CNBC.
Indeed, Sarah...what does the Vice President do at the undisclosed location these days?
Cleans his shotgun probably.
As one pundit said: She's no Hillary Clinton. She's Dan Quayle in a dress.
