The real original Maverick was an animal rights activist that organized the Democratic Party with a guy named Reagan.

There's also Mad Max Mel Maverick:

Dirk might be the biggest Mav, but former Mav Shawn Bradley was the tallest:

I was scrolling down looking at the pics on the original post and it bled into your pics (couldn't tell the difference).

Sure, I see it now but it's tricky.

Brand the mofo as a loose cannon. In the Southwest, the term is more deragatory as a lost calf, akin to a mama's boy. It originates with one of them Sam Houston type ranchers, but it more commonly refers to a calf that has gone astray. When a calf goes astray without a brand, it is up for keeps and it'll get beat down and branded by whomever finds it first. Just remember the republican base has hated McCain for the past twenty years, and this term of affection is actually a duble entendre. To them he's a lost sheep, a loose cannon, a misguided missile. Independent to Republicans means confused, it translates as someone who doesn't know his ass from his elbow.

Remember, the republicans are the party that has everyone in lockstep and on the same page. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. When they call him a maverick it means they can't wait to stoke that fire and nail his ass.

I don't know how that can be twisted and used against him without being a republican, but somehow I think that the flipflop hasn't stuck, as much because of Obama being forced into a corner on FISA and offshore drilling as because of the Republican offensive with this maverick message.

I don't know, I always find it more effective to use what someone is trying to force down your throat back onto them.

but I remember kind of liking the Maverick solo series (though I was a child, so I was probably enamored by it's 90s "coolness").  ; Regardless the Weapon X book where he was Agent Zero was good.  I will hear no arguments to the contrary.  So not entirely regrettable.

...to point out the little things.

Since I agree that the James Garner TV Maverick is the one which will come to most McCain's voters as the "original," I think it's fair to remind those of us who were around at the time and all these youngsters who never saw it that Maverick was a gambler, but he was basically a con man.

How could anyone go wrong reminding McCain voters of that, also?

the movie Maverick with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster is actually very good.

I saw it in the theater in the mid 90's and I watched it recently on TV.

where he blames the killing of Jesus on the Jews, but this time in the old west?  Or was that Apocalypto*?

* - Which, jokes aside, is an awesome movie.

I think so.

It's the one where Jesus is his partner (played by Danny Glover) and Jeremy Irons sends him those riddles with challenges he has to complete to prevent this weird liquid bomb mixture from exploding.

And then at the end he says "yippy kay yay mother f*r, go get me some iced tea".

surprised me. That movie rocked. Wow, Mel Gibson came out of a drunken stupor long enough to make something useful.
