Why is Obama Going on Vacation?

Obama is going on a 9 day holiday (vacation for you Americans!) in Hawaii... why?!

It seems crazy to me that Obama would take a 9 day vacation in Hawaii... I know he is from there and I know he needs a break... but surely he could go there for a little less than 9 days and surely he could have some more campaign events there so it doesn't look so leisurely...

You just know that McCain is going to hammer him on it all next week... "I am here trying to help lower gas prices for the American people at a difficult time in the economy, while my elitist opponent is taking a NINE DAY VACATION IN HAWAII"...

It just seems like weak sauce politics again...

Relax. It's mid-August. Few people pay attention to the campaign - particularly with the Olympics starting off. It's the best time to refill one's batteries.

Obama has sure had a gruelling schedule for months on end, working on weekends etc. He more than deserves this holiday and the one he took earlier this year.

Funnily, you wouldn't even really notice if McCain were to go on holiday. He just doesn't get nearly the same sort of attention (which both helps and hurts him). Anyway, McCain seems to take off more weekends rather than taking holidays en bloc. But then he doesn't have small kids.

It's important for candidates to be in good shape in high summer so they can shine during the campaign and in the following three months. I dare say his campaign would beg him to take the holiday weren't he doing so.

the stupid "standing around with the lights off" thing Boehner did (while playing golf).

Obama is just showing that he's not easily ruffled.

Maybe people in the media and elsewhere will start talking about McSame. The more they know him the more they'll like Senator Obama.

1. Because he can.

2. It will give him time to realize that Robert Wexler is the besy choice for VP and NOT any of the boring, half-Republican choices offered by MSNBC and the like.

He is going to Hawaii to visit his grandmother who he hasn't seen for 16 months.

Obama is from Hawaii, remember? So him going there is not like you going to Hawaii, its like you going to your grandparents.

Obama looks tired to me.  I think he could use a break.  He got none between the primaries and general as most candidates do.

McCain can attack the vacation but it seems a really dumb idea for the following reasons:

  •  I wouldn't go highlighting differences in work loads and energy levels if I were McCain.  Obama does an average of five events a day.  McCain does an average of one.  And McCain is going to lose a "whose more tired?" fight.
  • McCain pretty much quit being a Senator years ago.  He hardly ever votes.  And not just during campaign season.  I do not believe has cast a single Senate vote in four months.  (If he has, its been a small handful).  He is routinely "unranked" in Senatorial rankings having not cast enough votes.  He has more than once been outvoted by Senators who died less than halfway thorugh sessions.
  • Vacations, you say? Politicians?  Hmmm, any associations?  Yeah, bring up presidential vacations McCain.  Bush kinda fucked this issue up for you taking about 16 weeks of vacation a year.  Although to be fair to Bush, its not like there has been a lot of issues that desperately need presidential attention over the last eight years.
  • And finally, McCain has a vacation scheduled in two weeks.

Even in the 40th century, we heard tales about the epic vacations taken by your 21st century Earth President Bush.  The legends say he worked so tirelessly to save the world from rogue pretzels (after the infamous pretzel assassination attempt), only months off at a time could return him to full fighting strength.  That's why I began my conquering in Ancient Egypt, before the invention of the pretzel.  Nothing would stop me from conquering...  NOTHING!

Rest assured, that by the 40th century, the pretzel menace has been eradicated.

Not sure how many Avengers aficionados we have here, but take comfort that at least one person got it.

This is a timely vacation, as it comes right after the media started repeating some stupid line that "X percentage of Americans are tired of hearing about Obama."  Talk about the media reporting on the media!  You'd think they could just change the channel, but instead Obama has to go hide away.

I hate to be proved right, but I was right!

The reason Obama is doing poorly in the polls all of a sudden is that for some reason he decided he could take NINE days holiday, leaving McCain to look all Presidential in dealing with a major international crisis, while Obama was bodyboarding.

Everybody here seemed to think that it was ok for him to take NINE days off in the middle of a presidential campaign, like it wouldn't make a difference. Can you imagine McCain taking NINE days off?

So, Cenk, when you're trying to figure out why McCain is taking the lead, it's not just about negative attack ads. It's about Obama's mistaken decision to go on holiday!
