Three Political Rallies Today

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

I watched three political rallies on CNN this morning.

First, Sarah Palin in Colorado.  These events are called rallies because they are designed to "rally" people to the candidate. This is exactly what Sarah Palin did.  She's good.  She began the rally, of course, referring to the Wall Street crisis and sounding like a Democrat. She talked about regulation, regulatory reform, excessive CEO compensation etc.  It's unbelievable. These Republicans do nothing but talk about smaller, limited government and mythical free markets, but when there is a crisis, they rush to claim how they will use the government to fix it.  The point is that the Democrats are right in their approach, and everybody knows that, but Republicans are masters of rhetoric to trick people into voting for them instead of Democrats.

Next, Palin moved to her cheerleading best, talking about all the Alaska natives who play professional sports for Colorado teams.  Are you kidding me man? Is that the issue here? But it works; the crowd was going wild.  Palin continued on to praise her husband, who is a member of the Steelworkers Union.  Wait - is that a good thing all of a sudden? I can't keep up with Republican hypocrisy.  She then lied again about rejecting the Bridge to Nowhere. She is shameless. This past weekend the press hammered her for that repeated lie, but she is undaunted.

I think Colorado is lost. Palin is going to carry it for McCain.

Next up was Joe Biden. Snooze fest. He started off on such a downer, with low energy, and talking about the death of Rep. Sander Levin's wife.  To make matters worse, the audio was messed up on CNN and a rather loud continuous buzz could be heard over all of Biden's comments.  Finally, after several minutes of talking about what a great guy John McCain was, Biden woke up and hit McCain fairly hard on some of his proposals and idea. Too little, too late.

Later CNN cut to John McCain in Florida. Like many of McCain's appearances, there was something strange about this. The setting appeared to have the candidate at the center of a 360 degree crowd, so on TV, McCain was showing the back of his head half the time.  He spent the first part of his rally talking about the only thing in his campaign that is working - Sarah Palin.  He talked about how Palin's husband is a four-time dog sledding race champion, and how that makes him ready for Washington.  I'm not even kidding.  But McCain knows that is ridiculous, so he kind of cut himself short and moved on to something else.  He's really a very awkward man.

Anyway, in conclusion, I am worried that the Palin/McCain ticket will end up capturing enough voters in critical swing states to win this election. David

Republicans are now Democrats in sheep's clothing?  Brilliant strategy.  Sorry the Democrats haven't been able to make it work the last two elections.

I like Biden, but he needs to stop taking ANY opportunity to praise McCain.  the Obama/Biden base doesn't care about being civil or nice to the McCain/Palin ticket anymore.  McPalin is a liar - pure and simple.  According to Gallup today, 47% of Americans polled like liars or they're so dumb they still don't know they're being lied to.  "Whut did that thar teevee say, Ellie Mae?  Did it say sumpin' 'bout the old feller bein' in Nam?  I hope he kicked himself some gook ass!  Ah'm votin' fer him and that purty lady!" (Sorry about using the word "gook".  I was in the middle of a gross characterization. Couldn't help ma'self)

Well until the right-wing host cut her off saying "I thought she was only going to talk for 10-12 minutes."  She was off talking about special-needs children (lying) and they must have lost interest, so they went to commercial.

But this is what I noticed--she (they) has basically adopted all of the Democrats' campaign strategies and policy positions.  CHANGE! Government regulation, union membership (?!?!? WTF?).  I don't get this story about Todd Palin--he belongs to a Union AND he owns a fishing company?  And he's a snowmobile musher.  I was wondering if any of those athletes (like Mark Schlereth) were actually supporting McLame or if they were just being mentioned by the Cheerleader.   Either way she is very very good at reading a teleprompter and parroting other people's speeches.  George Bush is very good at this as well.  Think about it.

I think Palin will keep Colorado, Nevada red. Palin and McCain combined will win New Mexico. Virginia is still too much of a dream for Obama. Obama is behind in Ohio and Florida.  This is really bad news; I'm starting not just to worry but to believe that Obama can't pull it off.

I think in speaking about the Electoral Map, you are right on - Obama doesnt win Virginia or Ohio, and he's starting to lose Colorado and Florida...

Throw in Missouri and New Mexico, you have a fine mess and a McCain Victory - California and the Northeast isnt gonna get Obama elected...

I still love watching you guys squirm!

Really? I keep hearing this from Democrats. Colorado is the red state that Democrats are most confident of winning.

Let's take a look at Prof Rich's famous state polls, and specifically, the most recent polls from this week. (oooopsie dooopsie)

What about Pennsylvania?
What about Michigan?
What about Minnesota?
What about New Mexico?
What about Ohio?
What about Florida?
What about Nevada?
What about Wisconsin?

Yeah Rich, the new state polls are finally catching up with the national poll realities. Let's hear you talk some more smack.

Listen up you little weasel. Post convention state polls are finally emerging, and the numbers don't look good for Obama. He is now running within the margin of error in states like MN, MI, PA, WI.

State poll results are finally catching up with national polls.

You can quit hoping that Obama can lose the popular vote, but still win the electoral vote by threading the needle with enoug h states to get to 270. That is a very unlikely outcome.

Colorado
Pennsylvania
Michigan
Minnesota
New Mexico
Ohio
Florida
Nevada
Wisconsin

Can Barack Obama still win this election? Absolutely, but it's gonna be very close. He will have to outperform McCain in the debates.

White voters in MI, OH, PA love Sarah Palin and Todd Palin. In fact, the GOP has Todd Palin making as many campaign stops as Sarah. The guy is a snowmobile racer, pipeline worker, commercial fisherman, stay at home Dad.

From Daily Kos

In an election for President of the United States in Virginia today, 09/15/08, 7 weeks till votes are counted, Democrat Barack Obama defeats Republican John McCain 50% to 46%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, WJLA-TV in Washington DC, WTVR-TV in Richmond, and WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released one week ago, immediately following the Republican National Convention, Obama is up 3 points; McCain is down 3. The movement solidifies Virginia place as America's 2008 battleground.

Utah is the only one I totally give up on, the rest are ALL in play. Yes, even Alaska and Arizona - the anti-Palin rally over the weekend IN Alaska drew more people than her return home last week, including the National Guard folk who had to be there. Arizona DOES have a Democratic Governor - and female to boot. Don't count it out.

Don't let the bobos get to you - there really is no reason to start worrying before 8 pm EDT Nov. 4th.

Obama will win. It's "Do or Die" for the country and I trust that enough people will understand that by election day, polls be damned. There really is no other choice, as a glance at the headlines readily displays. Plus, who knows how many other shoes are going to drop between now and then - the Dem/Lib 527's are just getting off the ground. Plenty of time.

The more McCain and Palin get a chance to speak, the better the chances for Obama. Maybe not in person, at rallys for the faithful and already committed, but to a viewing audience who will quickly tire of the same lies being repeated. When the "Do you think I'm STUPID" signs start popping up at every Republican event, the word will spread like an e-mail from a Nigerian Prince.

And Bolivia doesn't seem like a very attractive alternative right now...

Thanks to Crooks and Liars, I can present an example of what I mean by, "the more they talk, the better we sound." Note that this was published last January 27th in the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin's responses on radio talk show very unbecoming

The governor's appearance on KWHL's "The Bob and Mark Show" last week is plain and simple one of the most unprofessional, childish and inexcusable performances I've ever seen from a politician.

Anchorage DJ Bob Lester unleashed a vicious, mean-spirited, poisonous attack on Senate President Lyda Green last week while our governor was live on the air with him.

When we played the tape on my show the day after it happened, we received 130 calls. Even some Palinbots were disgusted.

The Daily News posted the recording on its Web site and it fired up bloggers.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner editorial writers demanded the governor apologize. The Juneau and Ketchikan papers also ran the editorial.

The Daily News opinion page addressed the governor's gaffe. They wrote "She came off looking immature herself, almost high-schoolish. It was conduct unbecoming a governor."

It was conduct unbecoming a human being, never mind a governor.

The governor's office eventually tried to spin the public relations disaster, releasing a statement reading, "Governor Palin was caught off guard by Bob Lester's reference to Senate President Lyda Green."

I don't buy it. Early on in the conversation before Palin started to crack up, Lester referred to Sen. Green as a jealous woman and a cancer. Palin, who knows full well Lyda Green is a cancer survivor, didn't do what any decent person would do, say, "Bob, that's going too far."

But as the conversation moved on, Lester intensified his attack on Green.

Lester questioned Green's motherhood, asking Palin if the senator cares about her own kids. Palin laughs.

Then Lester clearly sets the stage for what he is about to say by warning his large audience and Palin. He says, "Governor you can't say this but I will, Lyda Green is a cancer and a b----." Palin laughs for the second time.

What were teenage boys thinking when they heard the governor laugh at someone being called a b----? How about the teenage girls who look up to Palin. What did they think when they heard her laugh?

But there is more. Lester then describes Green's chair as big and cushy. A clear reference to the senator's weight. Palin laughs a third time. She's just having a grand old time.

Palin was clearly enjoying every second of Lester's vicious attack on her political rival.

But it gets worse.

Lester asks Palin point blank: "Do you have any idea of what you did, to make Lyda Green dislike you, hate you?" How does Palin respond? Does she do the right thing? What you would expect from a mature leader, a governor and say, "Bob, Lyda doesn't hate me."

No, she responds like a 13-year-old and says, "Um, you know once and a while I try to figure that out but I can't figure that out."

The Palin camp says the governor did call Green and apologize. That was the right thing to do. But the governor's statement shows the apology a half-hearted one.

The statement in part reads: "The Governor called Senator Green to explain that she does not condone name-calling in any way and apologized if there was a perception that the comment was attributed to the Governor."

But there's strong evidence Palin did condone Lester's name-calling. At the end of Lester making fun of Green as a mother, calling her a cancer, twice, and saying she has to go; after calling the senator a b----, making fun of her weight, and accusing Green of being jealous and hateful; after all of that, Lester ends the conversation offering to visit Palin.

How does Palin respond? "I'd be honored to have you."

The statement released by the governor's office also called Palin's action bad judgment.

But bad judgment is when you stay up late the night before a big test, order steak at a Chinese restaurant or wear blue jeans to a black tie affair.

What the governor did was wrong.

Not only did she sit by and watch a decent public servant get thrashed in front of tens of thousands of people, she actually enjoyed it.

This is our governor, for goodness sake.

Our leader. I wonder.

Why will she help in Colorado and New Mexico?

These are extremely conservationist states.  They both also have HUGE hispanic populations.

What aspect of these states do you see her appealing to?

Plus, Colorado is still Obama +3 well after the RNC and Palin rollout.

My family has a house in New Mexico.  I don't see any reason she has extra strong appeal there.

The wild card right now is that the Obama ground game in Colorado is extremely efficient and effective.  Remember these elections aren't just won on CNN.  I can only hope they are as effective in Florida as they are here.  I have high hopes for Nevada because the entire state of California is working there.  NM is the shenanigans state, but their Dem lean is good for us.

I saw Obama yesterday morning speaking in Colorado hammering on the economy/banking failure themes. He KILLED. He absolutely nailed it.

They've got a strong ground game there, and he's going to hammer this theme, and he's obviously a great speaker.

They know what they're doing, they have a plan, and they're hammering it out.

Colorado isn't McCains, if it were, Obama wouldn't be wasting his time and resources on it.

I know it is easy to be discouraged right now, but I do think some of the media hype about Palin is turning.  Whether that will make a difference or not is another thing.  There is still time, but you also know that the entire Administration is hell bent on getting themselves an October Surprise in order to continue their reign of power.

It bothers me greatly that America is in such a precarious position right now in terms of its economy, world standing, and international conflicts, and yet half of Americans seem to think that McCain, who comes off (to me anyway) as a doddering old lying fool, and a woman with no experience at all, backed by a husband in the oil industry, and the Party that got us into this mess in the first place, would be the best choice for moving in a positive direction.

It is enough to make you want to drink Drano.

by desertpear on 09/15/2008 03:09:34 PM EST

TYT viewers/listeners and people immersed in the liberal blogosphere focus so much on the media, that we/you fail to realize that what is going on is not just "media fascination" with Sarah Palin - the people actually like her, voters actually like her.

The media can turn all you want, but it looks like many voters are going to turn out in November to vote for her.

I realize she is very popular with some Americans in a Gump sort of way.  I just hold out a teeny bit of hope that the popularity will be short lived and that the information just now getting front page placement will have a moderating effect on the enthusiasm.

Here approval is at 52% but has fallen from 58% in the last three or four days.  McCain and Obama are both at 57%.

I have certainly heard this talking point a lot lately (the people LOVE Palin so give it up Dems!) but I am not convinced.

More to the point, I am not convinced the battle to define her is over.  In fact, I think she is still getting a huge boost from the new car smell and is severely open to attack.

This is why the McCain campaign has gotten so hysterical (constant attacks of sexism, rapidly spewing lies, responding to all issues by accusing Obama of being "desperate").

One thing we have learned is that the scandals on her are very real and that she is NOT ready to present herself as a serious candidate. If McCain gets demolished by the view, what chance does this woman have?

If you think about Palin's approval is about 5% above where McCain is polling.  Assuming most of McCain's supporters like her, her appeal to the middle seems about average and falling.
