Sarah Palin: Give the Money Back

Sarah Palin famously said in her Republican convention speech that she told Congress "thanks, but no thanks" for the Bridge to Nowhere. Now, this has been discredited in just about every media outlet in the country. During the Charlie Gibson interview, she didn't even deny that she in fact lobbied for the bridge when she was running for governor.

This, of course, has not stopped her from making the same claim dozens of times since it's been discredited. But what's even more interesting is that she apparently kept as much of the money as the federal government sent her. What happened to thanks, but no thanks?

Though the entire financing for the bridge did not pan out, the US government has set aside $73 million for the project. So far, a lot of money has been wasted building access roads to bridges that don't exist and never will. Of course, people get rich off these projects, so they don't give a damn where they lead as long as the money leads right back into their pockets.

So, I'd like to start a simple campaign called "Give the Money Back." If Sarah Palin is going to claim how much she dislikes earmarks -- despite the fact that she asked for over $250 million in earmarks this year for Alaska and asked for more earmarks per capita for Wasilla than any other city in the country -- let her prove it. Why doesn't she give back the $73 million set aside for this useless project?

Remember that's our money. Republicans love to talk about how it's the taxpayer's money and they know how to spend it better than the government. In this case, I agree. I certainly know how to spend it better than the Alaskan government. So, give it back.

Pass this message on. Demand that Sarah Palin give back our money. That $73 million is now sitting in the bank account to nowhere. It's time that it be returned to its rightful owners -- us!

You have laid this out so even righties (should: ((use with discretion)) be able to understand it.  However, if WE, Dems and  Independents and other like-minded, tend to suggest that she is still or going to be significant by doing something that draws attention to her; ...I'm trying to say, would we be helping her stay in the news/spotlight?

I know it would help everybody if she gave the money back, as long as she's portrayed negatively.  But, even the top aides to McCain do not deny that they use the less informed to 'get the job done.'  So, if many who just look at the news, see her, or her name in public, they (the less-informed) may very well believe she must be doing very well.

I agree 100%.  I never thought of that, but that is a good way for the pics to speak to everybody, without actually hearing, Sarah Palin over and over,  Even tho' the MSM seems to be (somewhat) coming out of their fear-shock and putting Sarah somewhere in the negative.  In some cases the minimal informed decide on name exposure without bothering to read.  With the t-shirt way, the less connected don't have to draw their conclusions on the flood of her name alone.

The Republican party is all about the here and now.  They go for the short-term boost and hope the media doesn't call them on there lies, (For the most part it has worked wonderfully).  They make a statement and an average person who looks at it does not look into whether it is true or not.  It's the job of the media to find the truth of these stories and provide the American people with this information.  So far they have failed miserably what a shocker.

Cenk, you really hit it out of the park here. The beauty of it is that it's incredibly simple, easy to remember and repeat.

It's easy enough that it makes for a perfect slogan and sound bite (i.e. perfect for television news and paper headlines).

And as you suggest, it's vague enough to get low-info voters asking damaging questions.
