Long-tailed Widow Bird - I didn't take this photo, but I saw these in the grassy fields around the Johannesburg Airport and they sort of blew my mind.  Anyone else a birder here?

Did you know that magpies were just found to be the first non-mammal to recognize themselves in a mirror?  This used to be the test for self-consciousness.  It's interesting if you are into that sort of thing.  A dog can't do this, but great apes, some dolphins, and elephants can. All the crows and ravens and magpies are super smart animals.

Maybe not the most scenic backdrop, but you can see every detail in mom quail's face and she looks to be watching carefully and concernedly.

The chat is off the front page (I think, assuming the show is still live?) and thank god for that.  I mean, I love the chat and all, but it fucks up my computer something fierce sometimes.

And I also like the forum being on the left side of the page now.  It's looks much more prominently displayed.

that it is code for "obama isn't patriotic," i.e., he wouldn't put country first.
