Josh Howard and the National Anthem

This was posted on my Blog yesterday.
Back in June of this year, Josh Howard an NBA player for the Dallas Mavericks (a team I root for) was caught on tape in an Allen Iverson charity event telling someone, while the National Anthem was being played, that he wasn't going to say that because he didn't support it. And the reason he gave was because he's Black.
Now, this has stirred up a lot of sensitive feelings and outraged a lot of patriotic Americans in this country.
However, as a white guy I think it would be pretty outrageous for me to pass judgement on someone who is speaking from a point of view that I know nothing about.
I've known many Black people who have that exact same mentality. This is a country where Blacks didn't even have the right to vote until the 1960's, and who still today face racial profiling, harassment and worse just because they are Black.
This country provides a lot of benefits and support and opportunities, however don't ever let yourself be fooled into thinking that this is an equal opportunity land, because it's not. That sucks and I wish it wasn't like that, but it is.
But White people benefit from laws and rules that discriminate against minorities. It's a fact. And as such I don't feel that it's in my place or any White person's place to condemn a man who honestly feels that way.
And to be honest, if I WERE in his situation, I can't say I'd have a different viewpoint.
Sean Bell was killed on the night before his wedding by the police. he was shot multiple times along with his friends, despite not having a weapon, not threatening the police or anything.
Our history is filled with Sean Bells which accentuate the negative of how Black people and other people of color are treated in this country.
Is it better in this country than in some other countries? Of course. Does that make this country perfect? Of course not.
And should we blindly follow our country and our leaders despite evidence that they are doing wrong? Should people of color just sit back and swear undying loyalty to a country that has historically (and still to this day) discriminated against, harrassed and KILLED people like them for shady reasons?
I'm white so I can't answer that. But I can tell you if the roles were reversed and white people were the ones being pulled over and harassed and kicked and shot and killed daily, and had laws that were manipulated to prosecute me on the thinnest of evidence, then I might have a hard time being proud of this country as well.
Just because you make a buncha money in here doesn't mean that you're viewed differently.
To a lot that are in power, they're still nothing but a N-----.
And that's a damn shame.
