Incidentally, has anyone seen the story about McCain (himself) twice attributing Obama support to pasty faced geeks who live in their parents basement and play D&D?

The first 3 (if memory serves) were drawn by John Romita and inked by Klaus Jansen. Beautiful. While mining for this on google I noticed there's a War Zone movie slated for December 2008. I dunno, I'm keeping my powder dry.

The first 5 of this series were drawn and inked by Frank Miller and Klaus Jansen. Can't tell you offhand who wrote'em but they were fucking awesome. I paid $10 for this a week after it came out. Know how much its worth now?

That's right, you guessed it. $10. That's okay, its not for sale anyway. Sniff.

by hazmat on 09/04/2008 01:55:15 AM EST

[ Parent ]

And I have those first five as well (though I bought them later).

War Zone was a pretty good series.  Romita Jr.'s gruff looking strong-jawed people were perfect for the Punisher's world.  The Ennis run is still the best in my opinion though.  Go pick up a trade of the "Welcome Back Frank" storyline.  If you like the Punisher, it's well worth your time.  The Max title is (was) also solid.  Sometimes it gets very mindless, but it always satisfies my bloodlust.  ;)

oh man I love you guys. This is unbelievable. Do you know how many people have read these comics? A small handful. Do you have the original limited series too? That was my introduction. I had to hide #3 from my parents because I was afraid they would prevent me from reading comics if they saw the cover. They didn't shelter me or anything, but you know, just in case ;-)

Although I only bought #2-5 I caught number one in a later printing. Thanks for the tips.

by hazmat on 09/04/2008 02:17:45 AM EST

I have the original limited series from '85, but I don't have the '87 series that you're talking about.  I thought I had it, but I just looked through my old box to try to find the #3 that your parents thought was so bad, but I came up with nothing.  I can't find a pic of it online either.  Cursed internets.

or I would have posted it. Its airbrush art. It had a white background, with the skull (I think) and a very pissed off Frank Castle in full dress holding a large gun, like a magnum or something. there were bullet holes in the background with blood dripping out of them. It was unlike any comic cover I had ever seen. To tell you the truth I hadn't read comics much up to that point, but it opened a whole new world for me.

by hazmat on 09/04/2008 03:06:03 AM EST

I was trying to place the cover/series you guys were talking about but that pic just brought back one helluva grade school flashback! I remember trying to put together a trade for that series several times, unsuccessfully I'm afraid. I couldn't get the other kid to budge and he couldn't get me to give up what would've made the deal possible. I think we still put something together, though, where he got everything I was offering but for an entirely different set of comics.

A throw-in to that set I got was a Guardians of the Galaxy #12 (I think) with Firelord on the cover getting impaled by a future Ghost Rider. It wound up being a great throw-in because through that issue I became obsessed with that somewhat corny series and it's still a nostalgic favorite of mine. Now I have to go and finish what I started and get this Punisher series, along with the Avengers he had!

I read most of what Ennis wrote before his Punisher run and thought it was good but not great.

[ Parent ]

his earlier pre-Max Marvel Knights Punisher run?  I thought that was great as well.  The inevitable (and I would imagine Marvel demanded) Punisher/Wolverine crossover that he did was hilarious.

It's a shame that the Ennis Nick Fury Max miniseries sucked so bad.  That could have been golden.  If anyone could match Frank Castle in badassosity, it's Fury.

the only thing Ennis has written I haven't read is Hellblazer.

I agree with Fury and his badassness.  I love the Ultimate Samuel Jackson Fury.

I liked the second Ennis run (I think it was second, he had 12 issues before that at least) and actually like the first Ennis/Pun run better but the MAX stuff is so much more grown up and abandons a lot of Ennis' weird obsessions (missing body parts, mutilated faces, sodomy rape, gender confusion) and becomes much more about Castle, his psychology and the world he haunts.

But even the least of Ennis' Punisher work is better than everyone else's best.

by hazmat on 09/04/2008 01:58:50 AM EST

Along with my several un-liberal death-glorifying comments when I'm a bit too angry.

You should read the Punisher 2099 series. They weren't widely read and I know most fans would still pooh-pooh the whole 2099 collection as teh industry getting too title-happy, but Punisher 2099 was an interesting take. They take the psychological issues to a new level. You know, I actually never finished reading that series... first task of winter.

I liked the Thomas Jane movie too. They kept the character nicely in tune with his somewhat psychotic appreciation of violent vengeance (I know, I know... punishment.... riiiiiight.)

Seriously, the Logan movie better be rated R.

I have a classic Fantastic Four logo shirt, a Cap shield shirt, a Venom spider wraparound shirt, a Grendel "behold the devil" shirt, a Silver Surfer (bought recently from Hot Topic), one with a huge strutting Galactus, and (my favorite) "Magneto was right" (I would post a pic of it, but the only one I can find on google is much lamer looking, and it makes me feel much geekier when I see the other douche bags wearing them.  Not me though.  I look badass... hopefully).

I'm going to go hang myself now.

Don't leave me alone as the only one that nerdy! But, seriously, I do look badass in my Punisher shirts, and no one can ever convince me otherwise.

I also have the wraparound Venom (several, of course, can't risk being without the option of wearing it, as I did for the last two Spidey movies), two Ghost Rider shirts (too goofy-looking to wear more than once, though)along with a very cartoonish X-Men shirt though, in my defense, I didn't buy that one a friend did, and I haven't worn it yet. Also, the majority of pictures of me as a kid have me wearing a Batman shirt or hoodie (DC before age 9).

The "Magneto was right" one makes me jealous. Hope you don't mind if I immediately commence searching for one as well.

It is getting a bit convoluted where I had gotten to in the sequesls but it is still a terrific take on teh whole Marvel Universe and mythology. I have the Venom wraparound.  Funny how many positive comments I get on it.

Once I had a very strange conversation with a woman who insisted it was a native American symbol for an eagle.  I told her it was a spider and she laughed at me.  She would have none of it.  She did not seem to understand it was a comic book character.  This went on for like five minutes.  It was awesome.

My son has Punisher and the Magneto was right shirt.

I do have to say, as a high school teacher, Marvel shirts are extremely hip.  I see at least 5 a day and often on the "cool kids".  I had a girl in summer school who wore a different one every day and she seemed to be quite popular.

Now Spence and I don't seem quite so unbalanced. Well, not in these comments anyway.

right away, because aside from the awesome title, I'm a little mixed on my reaction to Matthews. That orange-haired dude is insufferable. He was one of the biggest Bush mouthpieces during the Bush era.

Yeah the beginning of the segment was good, but Matthews really softened up toward the end. He expressed some skepticism (that's his job, not especially praiseworthy) about their attacking the media, then let them blather on for a bit. He even kind of let them off the hook by saying "you guys are good at what you do", which seemed to me a kind of way of winking and saying "come on, between us washington insiders, we're pals right? I know you guys aren't really that dumb, you're just good spokesmen".

I think he got a little soft in the middle but not really by the way he finished. And the "you guys are good at what you do" came off as a jab at their spinning, to me anyway.

I hear the criticism of what he did a lot during the Bush years (not over yet, btw), I'll never forget some of the Muslim fear-mongering segments where he all but calls the liberal an America-hater and the actual hate-monger a patriot... but he still comes across to me as sincere. Foolish at times, but sincere.

it just wasn't clear the way I wrote it. I was referring to the dipshit on the far right (nice how that turn of phrase worked out) with the orange hair as being a mouthpiece for Bush, not Matthews.

Of course I agree with what you say about Matthews during the Bush years. I rewatched the vid you linked of the Matthews Smackdown, and realized that it plays a second time even better than the first. Tweety had me in stitches. Let's hope its a sign of more to come.

And is that a.... Countdown? hehe

I had a feeling you meant something else... the "orange hair" description wasn't too accurate for Tweety's yellow-golden locks! And I'm hopeful that it is a sign of more to come. I think he's seen what Republican-style framing and spin does to a country and wants to see something different.

Chris Matthews: "I never heard anybody sing the praises of Sarah Palin, or even discuss her as a potential VP candidate until she was selected by John McCain."

That is the summation of the segment that you linked. You were really impressed by this?

Knowledgable Republicans like KenTX were promoting Sarah Palin months ago.

is the baby with Down syndrom yours? :)

so basically no Republican that matters talked about her

it's not because you're the king of the universe in your mind, that you have any importance outside it

1. KenTX is the world's smartest Republican because I read the Palin pick months before everyone else. 2. Chris Matthews is clueless on political events, and DP is blowing him because she admires stupidity.

"KenTX is the world's smartest Republican"

okay, I'm fine with that, that still makes you dumber than the average person :)

"Chris Matthews is clueless on political events"

not really, only you seem to think that, the man might not always be bright enough to see the difference between spin and truth, but he understands politics

"DP is blowing him because she admires stupidity"

wrong again, then she would be blowing you

insane crazy yelling conservative radio host Heidi Harris comes on Hardball from time to time, although I don't know if she'll be booked in the future, last time Matthews had a look on his face "who is this crazy woman"

After the words he used tonight, HE can blow ME! What a fucking lunatic. To think they PAY him...
