New Title: NOT today's open thread! MMJ!

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

Freewheelin' FranklinOkay, I'll start today's, I guess. Henry Rollins surprised me on Meet The Bloggers today - He made it very clear that what Cenk does is NOT easy for "the guy off the street" - and Henry has (had?) his own show on IFC!

But, that's a By The Way for my main topic here (as always, this is the place to feel free to post something you don't think needs it's own post (Like ANY MORE Sarah Palin threads...hint hint and a big sigh...) so you don't have to think that responding is necessary. Feel free to take the thread in any direction you want. Anyhow, I read a story at ABC, Medical Marijuana's Eco Boomtown, Humbolt County High: California Community Thrives on Legal Pot , and I made a comment there, which I have duplicated below. Post away!

I have been an Oregon Medical Marijuana card holder for about 5 years now. We don't have "dispensaries" but we do have a few community resources of patients helping patients. I don't know Humboldt's situation but one thing I fully resent is present in the article - leaving the reader with the impression that it's just a bunch of Reggae listening twenty-somethings getting over on "the man." Come with me to MY center and you find 35+ to be the norm - both sexes, too! You will also notice a few walkers, wheelchairs, limps, very skinny people, and no profit motive past keeping the center available as a resource to a group of people who ARE there under a physician's referral. It would be wonderful - and professional - for the Media to try and understand what their presentation of a bunch of party animals slacking and smoking does to the casual reader. It does NOT present a fair or accurate portrayal of the VAST majority of patients. Try interviewing the person who is homebound or receiving chemotherapy instead of the guy in the rainbow hat kicking a hackeysack.

All I ask is: Be Honest. If you want to write an editorial expressing a POV that all MMJ people are really just doing it to get thrills, come out and say so - don't be so passive aggressive. Let the reader know up front that you have an agenda so they won't be fooled into thinking the story is well-rounded or complete.

Oh...silly me asking that from ABC...(or NBC or FOX or CBS or...)

And I know I will come off bossy ;)  But I began the Open Threads as topic-free posts for people to talk about whatever was on their mind.  When the thread includes topics, like you and nobias have done, it isn't really an Open Thread, is it?  I mean, this is something that deserves a post with a title!!!  I want to discuss Medical Marijuana.

I have been starting a new Open Thread when the current one drops to the #20 position, but now it seems people want one every day?  I am down with that.  I don't need to be the only person to start Open Threads, but I would like to see them be topic-free.  Another thing I try to do is make them nonpartisan by just including a photo.  I wanted to honor the fact that we have non-democrats here.

Now, on to the topic of medical marijuana!!

I do think it makes sense to change the diapers daily, though.

I will open a new O-Thread probably late at night then, and people can feel free to open one in the morning if there isn't one posted, since I am on the west coast and don't get up very early ;)

I deleted my original response down to that one line after deciding that what I wrote would not come across in writing like the way I wanted it to...with it the words, "It's your baby." It was only after pressing "Post" that it occurred to me...

I'm...not sure if I can post something without a topic. It's very Seinfeldian in nature...

in restricting it to talk of "medical."  Why are we spending billions of dollars to stop people from growing and smoking a plant which is less addictive and less harmful to your health than cigarettes, again?

Where common sense and scientific understanding take a back seat to inflammatory rhetoric.

Of course, it is difficult to talk frankly about on this website because certain people will of course use it like a club to beat us with.  Look--democrats are drug addicts!!

Marijuana is much better than people being addicted to OTC meds, but it has a stigma.  If it was available in pill form, our pill-addicted Americans would accept it more readily.

And all years ago.  Didn't get "addicted."  And yet I still want to see it legalized because I HATE stupid laws.

That Sarah had to toe the line by saying she smoked it when it was legal in Alaska, but "didn't like it."  People don't like chemotherapy either, but it helps with their medical condition.  I guess Sarah was using it recreationally....

If I were back in California, I would have a prescription for MJ.  Both Oregon and Washington have medical marijuana laws, but they are not as expansive as California's and don't acknowledge some legitimate uses.

Lets outlaw the cigarettes.

Hate those damned things.

If it weren't for the major tobacco lobbyists in the US, this might already have been true.  Look at all the places in the world that have passed laws outlawing smoking in bars and other "common areas".

Whenever I have something I want to say about Palin, I post it on one of the 100 active palin threads but they keep proliferating. The other species is free advice to Cenk. The best topical Palin thread that sticks out thus far is Chrisandyasmin's call for prayer. Sorry if I missed someone else.

Is a thread dedicated to Sarah Palin posts, but then we get into the whole herding cats routine.

A little bitching here and there helps. I don't want to tell people what to post or be a scold, although I realize this is the inevitable impression, so I'm trying not to pick on anyone specifically. We're all here to beat John McCain after all. Ken included.

In case you missed it, the New Yorker had an article on medical marijuana in California about a month ago too.  I lived in Arcata (the town in the ABC article) for 5 years and have been going there for many more.  My company has an office overlooking the Plaza seen in the photos of the ABC article.  My desk had a window and it was hard to avoid watching bizarre things happen daily outside on the Plaza.  I have to say that Arcata is a magnet for reggae-listening 20-somethings getting it over on the man!  When I moved there, I had to consider that most white guys I might want to date there would have dreadlocks.  But that's also because it is college town.  We jokingly call the Plaza folks "soilers" for their dragging pant legs ;)  The rest of the population seems made up of Slow Fooders, and then the thousands of Geologists, and Fisheries Biologists that Humboldt State University churns out.

So, if you are looking for a serious discussion of medical marijuana, Arcata is not a good example.  It is a great example of how marijuana could boost small town economies if made legal.  It isn't fair to represent it as the face of medical marijuana.

The topic of Medical Marijuana should be addressed in a serious fashion, and the conversation should include health professionals, ethicists, law enforcement officials, etc.  I hate articles that make it look like some are taking advantage of the MMJ system we have now.  Of course there are people that will take advantage--isn't that true for just about anything?  Sadly, no politician is going to touch this on a national level anytime soon.

I had been wanting to share this series with Turks, in case anyone else is interested in the subject of MMJ.

"In a unique new segment, Salem-News.com brings viewers the words and wisdom of one of Oregon's most famous doctors, Dr. Phillip Leveque, a man who fought in World War Two and now fights to make access to marijuana a matter of reality. He also was instrumental in the initial changing of Oregon law that allowed medical the use of Medical Marijuana in the first place."

I would love to see this man on The Young Turks.

Having lived in Arcata a bit myself, I think the way the article portrays this particular cooperative is a bit sensationalized. I have seen many people with obviously catastrophic conditions going there. This is likely because it has a good environment. The cooperative looks very clean from the outside and there are obviously posted signs prohibiting cell phone use, an identification requirement, as well as a sign reminding patrons not to litter on the property. The reporter must have shown up at 4:20.

The only disputes this cooperate had were the owner complaining to a neighboring shop of its patrons where blowing cigarette smoke into his door. They evidentally served Indian food there (wish I had known!) but were shut down by the City. The local anti-pot crowd have tried to shut down this particular cooperative due to them being an open and friendly place as opposed to the more impersonal doctor's office environment that they envision.

It is not ABC's fault as the local news reports with same slant plus a bit of Nixonian cultural bias.
