Did anyone notice this little item? Venezuela and the Russkies are holding joint naval exercises. Chavez wants "protection" from the U.S.

A new day is dawning. One that finds the United States of America militarily overextended and economically weak. Our treasure and blood has been spent on a meaningless war for a rapidly disappearing resource. We are indebted to our biggest economic and military rivals, the Chinese. Foreign countries are moving away from the almighty dollar. Our cold-war alliances have been cast aside as impediments to our imperial adventures.

 

Bush's greatest gift to the former Soviet Union was himself. By getting himself elected, and staring into those black pools of cunning, Vladimir Putin's eyes, and declaring them deep reservoirs of moral courage, he allowed mother Russia to be completely ignored for seven years. She has used the time well. She has money, oil, and the will to power. The Bear has awakened from her long winter nap.

As I've said before, there are a lot of reasons to be angry about the Bush years, but the American people haven't fully reckoned with his greatest failing, the un-checked resurgence of a newly belligerent and powerful Russia.

   On the nose there hazmat, and let's not forget good old Red China. The "fun" is just beginning. Our so called "former" enemies seem to be doing very well economically speaking.

    As my brother just said to me on the phone, "George W. Bush didn't take your money and give it to the rich. He gave it to the Chinese" Housing crisis any one?

thanks marbelizer. Let me start by saying that you are a great American. I did mention this in the first pgph of my post. It is key, but Bush's bad faith is greater than the sum of its parts.

Well Ktx, you think I will disappear because you can put up a couple of false posts.  Do you really think the people will believe you on anything?  Let alone believe you about me.

So DH, you think your solution is for everybody to go away -- to another country.  Your solutions fit with McCain's, he wants to fight Russia.  Wars between superpowers are over -- if not, the life on earth is over.  The only wars left is the strong over the weak; being a bully or a show off.  Much like your, "I can beat any man (you left out, "off."  "...beat any man off.")  Don't worry, I beleive everbody did you the favour and filled it in for you.  

Someone gave you the words truth and lies, but forgot to tell you there is a difference, a huge difference.  Same as pretentious and down-to-earth.  You have serious problems with these.

Putin is bent because of that missile defense system in Eastern Europe.  His aggression is not a surprise at all.  It has been telegraphed for at least a year now.  He said that if this missile defense system went through it would re-ignite the cold war and I suppose he meant it.  The worst thing about it is that the system is useless as a defense against Russia.  It's woefully inadequate against multiple missiles, cruise missiles, and airplane launched weapons.  It serves little practical purpose against the Middle East, where a launch of any kind against Europe would be almost like begging suicide.  An interception would have to be made in almost ideal circumstances for it to be of real use.

Russia is pissed for the same reason we would be pissed if Russia deployed a missile defense system in Cuba or central America.  The other part of this equation is that Europe has become much more dependent on Russian oil.  They can ill afford to alienate Russia because of this, so don't expect them to side with us.  If Russia decides to cut them off they would be forced to compete more with the US for Middle East oil.

This re-ignition of the cold war comes at a time we can least afford it economically or militarily.  I don't know what Bush stands to gain from this monumentally stupid move, I can only guess that he or his cronies will somehow make money from it.  Nothing else makes sense.

What bothers me is that the Republican party uses these types of things as fear tactics to remain in power.  That whole "making money from it" is a serious issue when corporations purchase elections.

Why, I wonder, is no one asking why he is so keen to do this system?  It was first sold as a deterrent against North Korea before he finally found out that the real pending threat was Al Qaida and Bin Laden, just like his counter-terrorism chief had been telling him for 9 months.  Now in its revived form it is billed as a defending Europe against Iran.  I suppose nobody would have taken him seriously if he pretended it was there to defend the US against an Iranian missile attack, since they don't have that capability.

Hey bfaul -- A very good piece you wrote here.  Very concise and to the point.  There is absolutely no pragmatic, or tactical reason for there to be a "missle defense shield" in eastern Europe; I doubt they want such a thing.  They have their own very good technology in defense missle systems and the knowledge to advise on their own needs.  So, if the mentioning of missles is not for provocation alone, then we deserve clear answers other than, "...to protect Europe."  Then, like you said, any other reason has to be money, nothing else.

I wish some reporter would dig up to the elbows in Bush family finances.  I think the clues would be there.  I would put nothing past this man.  He's the type who would tell himself that it's okay if he's making a buck because he's "keeping Amurica safe from nucular rogue evil-doers" even as he sinks us deep into the quicksand of another cold war.
